2015-2016 SUNY Downstate Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
CONGRATS! Accepting an offer before April 30 is not the same as committing to the school--you can choose to withdraw by April 30 and get your deposit back should you get accepted to your state school. Paying the deposit just guarantees you a seat for the incoming class.

When you sent your update letter, did you get a response acknowledging that your update would be added to your file? (I was placed on HFS and sent an update but didn't receive any kind of confirmation)

Thanks so much!!!!

Yes, I received an email response 3ish days after I sent it confirming that it will be added to my file. You should call them to confirm with them! Good luck and thanks again!!!!

Can anyone comment on the shadow a student day? I'm going to be in NYC next week and am considering it.

+1

also... did you officially sign up for this? i contacted the office like >2 weeks ago and they said they would get back to me with a form but haven't heard back..

called today and they told me it takes 10-12 weeks to hear back after interview date. i interviewed feb 11 so this seems insane because theyre supposed to have a complete class by march.

They told me 14-16 weeks, but some people having been hearing back in 4-5, so maybe they are just trying to make it so we don't bother them with calls all day long? =\

i think if we dont hear back within 4-6 weeks we wont even go on the hfs list and go straight to alternate list

I just emailed them about it. I suppose I might as well do it and will post about the experience.

How do you figure that? When does the ad com review applications after the interview?
there is a date in march when all med schools have to submit their full class to the aamc. that means that they have to fill up by that time. i think if we dont hear back by then then we go to the alternate list

This is not true. By that time the school has to offer acceptances to enough people to fill their class, but not all accept the offer. The school interviews through April. I have heard of people being directly accepted after an april interview. Obviously there are less spots and its harder to get in as the cycle rolls on...but it is not impossible.

The 4-6 week mark is nonsense...it took them 13 weeks to accept me and I interviewed in late january. These things take time. Right now, the school is primarily focused on 1) making sure MS2s are ready to move onto the clinical years 2) making sure the match goes smoothly. I can almost guarantee nobody will hear within 4 weeks, and that if they hear back after that mark it won't necessarily be for the alternate list.

The class will not be full or final until Summer. My best recommendation for everyone is to STOP trying to figure this process out and read adcoms minds. And do not believe everything you see or hear on SDN abut complete dates, deadlines, how many spots there are, etc

Omg I just got an II from SUNY Downstate for April. They had my app since July and then requested for spring grades in the fall!

I also just received an II for April! I am so surprised but very excited and thankful! Maybe I'll see you there? 🙂

Sent from my iPhone using SDN mobile

Anyone hear back from mid-late January interviews? Almost been 2 months now..

My interview is on April 4th. Is that the last date or are there people interviewing later than that?

He asked about interview invites, not the interview dates. Specifically if they are still sending out invites.

I would assume they send out invites as long as there are still interview dates, since people will drop out. But point taken.

I just got an interview for April 11. Is this likely for a waitlist spot or does it hold the same weight as the earlier interview days?

That's often the case with late interviews. We can't tell you about that because it's behind the scenes. Call admissions and ask.

I was recently put on Hold for Spring Consideration at Downstate and I wondering if there was any way I could help increase my chances to get into the school. Do you guys think a letter of intent would make any difference at all?

It's impossible to really know if it makes a difference or not, but I personally sent a letter expressing why I felt I was a good fit for the school (when it got closer to rereview, in early May), and was accepted like 10 days later. It certainly won't hurt to send one in, especially if it's heartfelt and states real reasons you would thrive at this school.

Is "Hold for Spring Consideration" a post-II decision? Did they email you or snail-mail you to let you know you were on hold?

When did you interview?

It is post interview (basically a wait list where every applicant is re-reviewed in May then either accepted or put on the "alternate list"). You will only receive snail-mail for an acceptance. Hold list is email, as I assume rejection is as well but am not sure.

Since this week is match week, should some of us hear news starting next week, or is March usually a quiet month in respect to decisions?

I wish I had an answer for you. I do not work in admissions, and have no idea when they meet or anything; however, I would assume things are slow this week considering the match. Just do your best to relax and not think about a timeline.

Just got put on hold for spring consideration.... Will probably withdraw in the near future!

Curiosity for what? If you are sure you aren't going, then please withdraw. Some of us would really like a spot.

I don't have a spot just yet friend. And I never said I won't attend. I have family on the island and in the city, and it's by far the closest school to home, so it's still a possibility.

I paid the $100, I paid the travel fees to interview, I'm entitled to see what happens to my application.

You have that right for sure...but can you give up your GT acceptance for me ...haha

Just got an II for April 20th and withdrew. Complete in July. No hold or any communications since then. Hope someone else waiting gets it!
