2015-2016 SUNY Downstate Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Interviewed here in February. Really enjoyed my experience. I know that people often say that the facilities are pretty old but that was definitely not my impression. SOME of the facilities are definitely not new, but that felt pretty irrelevant. Seems to be a great place to train, and fingers crossed for some good news!

Funny Story: Spoke to the admit office after my interview and they told me that it may take 14-16 weeks to get a response. Is this true?!!! The website only says 4-6.. Maybe I heard wrong because I was so nervous for my interview.. haha.

Took 13 for me to hear back last year...but I'd say it typically is around 10-12 this time of year

Wow! Okay.. May it is 🙁. I can only hope that the actual wait is shorter than that!
theres no way it can take 14 weeks for us since they start pulling off the waitlist in may. that means they have to evaluate people who interview in march before pulling off of the waitlist

For those who were accepted into the MPH program, but havent heard any news (pre-interview) from the MD part, did you still accept the offer from the MPH acceptance?

I accepted the offer, still waiting to hear on the MD interview results. The deposit isn't due until mid-April, so I figure I would have some time to decide or defer MPH enrollment until fall if I don't have any MD results by the time the MPH class is scheduled to begin in June.

Someone might have posted this already but is there an accepted students facebook group!?

They sent me an admissions requirements email recently that said to check out the "Official Downstate College of Medicine Class of 2020" group on facebook, but it doesn't exist...

Maybe we're supposed to start it ourselves?

You will not be responsible for making the group yourself. If its not already up, Faculty will set up the "official" one shortly, then somebody in my class...probably whomever is responsible for setting up your orientation...will set up the unofficial one that faculty and staff can not access, which will be the ACTUAL page you use for the next 4 years. Just be patient, and it'll all get done

Hi,
When do their interviews go into? I finished my secondary in July and haven't heard back. I'm not sure if they haven't gotten to my app or they're waiting to interview me at the last minute if there is an open spot. I wonder how this is coordinated actually. I am pretty sad about the whole situation.

Interviews run until early april I believe. The school does not review apps in order, as frustrating as that may be. Do not let it get you down and just keep a positive/open mind.

Until we are part of an admissions committee, we will almost always be confused as to how these things work =\

Anyone know when financial aid/ merit scholarships are given out?

pre-II rejection just now via email.

Just received my pre-II rejection. Reapplicant, IS, 3.8 cGPA 3.7 sGPA 31 MCAT. 🙁

:joyful: Accepted MD/MPH!!!! Interviewed 1/6 & postmarked 2/12!

EDIT:

I want to give a bit of hope to those waiting to hear back.

Earlier in this thread, people were talking about their tough interview experiences...ones where the interviewer really dug into them about their red flags and others that lasted only 15 of the allotted 60 minutes. Well, BOTH of these things happened to me and it was gruelling!! I was shocked to receive my acceptance. I always had hope I connected with my interviewer, but you never know. I actually had to re-read the letter a few times to convince myself it was real. So to those of you who are in a similar boat, hope is not lost!! Good luck waiting to hear back :luck:

congrats, thats interesting. another user here said how his interview lasted 15 min the first year and got rejected and then got in the following year after a longer interview. perhaps with you, they didnt need much to clear up in the interview and just accepted you. it could also be the style of the interviewer too- really straight to the point or lazy.

I just received an II. I'm excited but from what I hear, most schools have their class mostly chosen by this point. Is that true with SUNY Downstate?
Congrats!!! When were you complete if you dont mind me asking?
Also when are they interviewing until?

The interview coordinator said that they are interviewing through April (but I dont know if that means all of April). She also said that people who interview later have the same chance of getting an acceptance as those who interview earlier.

They would not offer an interview if they weren't interested in you, so it's as good a chance to get in as possible. Downstate interviews through the middle of April, and the class is nowhere near fully decided until Orientation begins in August...

With that said, best of luck and congrats on the interview!

Holding my breath post-interview; I really liked SUNY Downstate! Has anyone shadowed a student post-accept? (I did a quick search and didn't see anything on it, but sorry if I missed a similar post). I'm curious to know if you thought it was worthwhile.

I'm interested to get a student perspective on what the student culture is. At my interview, I got the sense that the students at Downstate are mostly pretty young, single, etc. (Our tour guide made a comment about one of the oldest students being a stand out, which made me feel really awkward because I was about the same age as that "old" student). The students that passed by our tour group did a lot of (honestly a little bit unprofessional) joking around, and it left me worrying that I would have a hard time fitting in with my classmates as a more non-trad student that's been out in the professional world for a while.

I'm sure you're going to hear this at any school...but our class really is pretty diverse. We have a lot of kids that came straight from college, but we also have quite a few students who are in their 30s or somewhere in between. Many of these students had changes of careers and have done some incredible things in their life. As far as I can tell, none of them feel uncomfortable and they all have been doing really well.

The student body is very relaxed and interested in helping each other out, which is a huge asset to this school. Quite a few students are married with children, and coming from all different lifestyles. The average age is around 23.5, so it is on the young side...though heavily skewed due to college linkage programs I am sure. I am personally a little older than the average student and have taken a few years off, and I never feel uncomfortable or anything like that.

Received a "Hold for Spring Consideration" about 4 weeks after my interview and said they will let me know "late spring". Do I still have a decent chance and any idea when late spring is?

This is so helpful. Thank you for sharing!

Anyone know the post interview acceptance rate?

My MSAR expired, and I'm not paying again for just this statistic =P

Is this a stat? I thought they just tell you interviews offered and then class size. 1144 interviews offered for 188 spots (726 II for 163 in state). If you're in state, I'd imagine they accept ~300 for the ~725 interviews (general rule of is 2x class size, right?). I'm not really sure. If so, that's over 40% post-II acceptance.

A lot of people get off the HFS list during may.

When did you get interviewed?

January 25th and thank you! That keeps me hopeful

oh interesting, I got interviewed the same day.

Honestly I'm surprised interview results post Jan are coming back so fast.

Last year it took ~9 weeks for me to get a HFS from an early December interview, and this year people are hearing back after like 4-5 weeks.

Have you not heard back from them this cycle?

Nope! but since it takes a different amount of time for each interviewer to submit their report/file on you to the committee, I don't expect people who have interviewed on the same day to necessarily hear back during the same week.

Also a note to people who are re-applying, the only difference in the interview was the question "why are you a better applicant this time"?

I was accepted last week!!! Interviewed 1/4 and letter was postmarked 2/18. I was put on HFS several weeks post interview and then sent an update letter. So happy to have been accepted, looks like an amazing school!!!!

Question- I am waiting to hear from one other school, my state school which I would go to over Downstate if accepted. If I don't get in, I would absolutely choose Downstate. The acceptance letter says to respond either accept or decline offer within 2 weeks, but I might not hear by then. Is accepting the offer not the same as committing to the school? Do I accept now? Sorry if there is an obvious answer somewhere I am just too happy and not calm enough to find it rn!!!!!!

CONGRATS! Accepting an offer before April 30 is not the same as committing to the school--you can choose to withdraw by April 30 and get your deposit back should you get accepted to your state school. Paying the deposit just guarantees you a seat for the incoming class.

When you sent your update letter, did you get a response acknowledging that your update would be added to your file? (I was placed on HFS and sent an update but didn't receive any kind of confirmation)
