2015-2016 SUNY Upstate Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
ya thats what im saying. i have not seen a single person here get placed on low priority. and ive heard so much variation on the HPA list. people saying almost everyone comes off, to roughly half come off, to only a few come off

cardz whats your status at this school? i remember talking to you on downstate thread as well

I was accepted here in early January.. and right now is probably the school I matriculate at unless I get into downstate or off the WL at Georgetown. If either of those accept me, I'll have to reassess my options. What about you?

i would love to hear the answer to this question, I am choosing between these schools on where to interview at along with Stony Brook (Only can go to 1 or 2 of the 3 IIs)

I think this is really tough. I heard SBU is the best of all three, but I hadn't visited the campus because I wasn't extended an II, so I wouldn't know. Upstate exceeded my expectations, and downstate really did not impress me (the students touring us basically said there are better places to go, which I thought was extremely odd).

I heard that from the students at upstate as well, actually. I asked someone (MSII, I think) what made her choose upstate and she was like, "well you go where you get in..." I did find it strange that neither she nor one of my student interviewers could come up with an actual reason to go to upstate

When I interviewed everyone seemed to love the place. And during my interview day I kind of walked all over the place since they give you a free hour to do so. I talked to everyone who would entertain my questions for a few minutes, even students from different programs who were in the library. I sat in on a classroom about ten minutes before class started and chatted with the MS1s in the class. Everyone was very excited to be attending Upstate. Some had reasons for Upstate in particular, others were just happy to be attending medical school.

We all know it's a state school. It's not Harvard. But does it have to be? I'm not super interested in bench research, and I don't think I'd like an environment where everyone does. Upstate has an attached level 1 trauma center, some really solid clinical opportunities very nearby, a much more affordable tuition for in-state students, and what seems to be an optimistic and welcoming environment. When it comes to choosing a SUNY school to attend, I suppose it comes down to the location. I've been living in Upstate NY for many (read 7+) years now, so to me this is the patient population I understand, and the environment I'm used to. TBH the only thing that would complicate the decision would be an acceptance to Buffalo, and even in that situation I don't think you can really make a "wrong" choice per se.

Portal cleared today. No blank section for college transcripts on my application summary (though
I graduated before applying so they have everything they need already). we'll see

edit* checked again, portal reverted back to congrats you've been selected for an interview. hmm

Every school you get accepted at requests your transcripts, no matter when you finished your degree

Has anyone had a negative exp here? (asking both interviewees and med students) I am a Mexican-American woman from the West Coast and I really want to put my self in the best environment to excel..both socially and academically. I will be interviewing here in the near future but I wanted some of others input. It seems like everyone on this thread is so helpful 🙂

Second state school that gave me a ban hammer. I received two II from OOS public schools while my own state schools reject me 🙁 I guess that's a sign to move out.
i feel this so hard. rejected from 2 sunys today

Can you clarify a bit what you mean by negative? Interviewing? After matriculating? What kind of negative experience?

Given that the only thing we really know about you is ethnic/cultural background (West Coast represent!), I guess I can volunteer that I talked with a Black woman M2 who was dissatisfied with the amount of diversity in the student body. That probably changes year to year, and she seemed pretty happy otherwise, but you might check the MSAR and draw your own conclusions?

It seemed like the student body is pretty tight, tho, especially due to the student housing towers (this perspective also from the same woman.) I also thought it was a rather nice facility. Definitely more conducive to bringing people together socially than many of the NYC schools.

Make it 3 now. If Buffalo is done interviewing, then that means all SUNY Schools rejected me. It's funny because I live like ~30 mins from Downstate 🙁

Buffalo rejected me 2 weeks ago,, so maybe you're still alive. Did stonybrook start rejections yet? I was also in the recent downstate slaughter

Stony axed me back in January after waiting since July.

Does anyone have experience or info about the MEDSET summer program? How useful is it in giving yourself a jumpstart into first year? Who usually benefits from the program? As a non-science major a year removed from school I think its something I should consider so I'm able to keep up and stay ahead when first year starts

Hey guys...is anyone here going to the second visit day? Any advice for those interviewing??? Please keep me posted

Portal cleared 1 week ago. Nothing yet. Jan 27 interview. *Crickets chirping*

I would definitely go, but unfortunately I have jury duty starting on the same day and I don't think they'll let me skip :/. I'm definitely looking forward to hearing from anyone who does get to go!

Personally I've already committed to suny upstate, and would rather not spend the money for plane ticket + accommodation to just visit my future school. What are some good reasons to actually go?

I'm actually up in the air between a couple schools... and my mother is interested in seeing Syracuse before I commit and spend the next four years of my life there (not that she has any bearing on my decision, but she likes to stay in the loop).

You can meet future members of your class, get answers to actual (not interview-tamed) questions about the school, see what changes have been made since you were last here, look into housing/other aspects of living here (get that squared away), learn a bit more about Syracuse.

Also, if you're wrapping up a job like I was, its a good excuse to gtfo for a day.

Has anyone uploaded their ID photo using the online student system?

The "reasons for photo rejection" section got me pretty good.

Interviewed at Downstate and Upstate recently...both good schools but polar opposites. Upstate was really cold and had a huge college town vibe (Syracuse) and Downstate was really "urban" in the heart of Brooklyn. I know Downstate has excellent clinical exposure but so should Upstate (Level 1 trauma center in the region with a great kids hosp).

I declined my SB II due to time constraints and I was turned off when I realized it was NOT a true P/F grade system. I hope I get into Upstate...really enjoyed the experience there. The students seemed so happy and I felt at home. Hopefully I hear back soon soI can attend 2nd look and meet some of you. 🙂

Anyone sure if they are going to Upstate or giving up a spot? 😉

Can anyone see financial aid award info on the MyUpstate page?
