2016-2017 APPIC Internship Interview Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So one of my top sites has two interview days, one in December and one in January. The invites have been sent out for the first one but not the second. I did not receive an invite for the first one but also know that this is not a rejection. Anybody have any ideas if this is any indication of preference if you get invited to the first or second interview session?
Don't read too much into it. It's probably just a matter of pragmatics. If they offered everyone their choice of dates (which some programs do) they'd have to deal with trying to juggle everyone's preferences and a billion emails back and forth from interviewees. It's easier to just offer one date and people can accept or decline (or if they reeeeally want it but reeeeallly can't make the one offered, maybe a few interviewees will email to inquire about whether the other date is an option) - overall it cuts down on admin time trying to coordinate interviews. Basically, quit worrying about this minor detail 🙂 there's a 99% chance it has nothing to do with you personally and is just an artifact of them trying to get things done expediently.

Received a (mass) email from Oklahoma Health Sciences Center stating that I am not invited for an interview, but my application is "still under consideration". Then they ask me to rank their program list during the match without saying they will rank me or not. I am very confused and possibly upset because this doesn't seem fair.
I don't think they are allowed to tell you if they will rank you or not.

I see that there are many posts in regard to medical and hospital settings on this forum, would anyone happen to have an information or other forum sites that relate more towards university counseling and community mental health settings?
The folks involved with universities are probably in the middle of wrapping up the semester and all the craziness that entails so may not get around to looking at all the apps until later than other types of sites. Don't let it worry you 🙂

I've noticed that people have posted receiving rejection emails from a site I applied to but I haven't heard anything either way. Another site I applied to people have said they have received an invite but I haven't heard either way. How long do you wait before sending an email to inquire? (nothing in my spam folder)
I think someone else already mentioned this but many sites come in waves- I had the same experience when I was applying 2 years ago. Don't sweat it (if possible!) 🙂

A close friend in my year and I applied to a lot of the same sites. Any recommendations for how we can tactfully let each other know when we get interviews to sites that we both applied to?
I had the same experience- just have a frank conversation with your friend. You can ask them verbatim what you just said. You can start the convo by acknowledging how stressful this time is and awful for everyone and you want to figure out the best way to be supportive of one another without unintentionally causing hurt feelings, so what are his/her preferences?. Frankly I found it super helpful that my friend would text or message me as soon as she heard, because 1) she tended to check much more frequently than me and theN 2) I would check my email -- wanted to respond quickly to get my first choice of dates! I also found that has her name is at the beginning of alphabet and mine is at end, she would sometimes get the invites before I did, though usually same day. My friend and I also set up a shared gmail calendar and tried to coordinate our preferences for dates if we both got interviews at hte same places so we could travel together. Our dates didn't overlap as much as we'd hoped, and there were some sites we both applied that one of us got interviews that the other didn't, but there were no hard feelings because big picture we all recognize the craziness of this process and were able to be supportive of each other rather than taking it personally. My recommendation for you is just have a frank conversation with your friend. You can def be helpful supports for each other throughout this process- and hopefully you'll have an interview or two that overlap, and you can explore a new city together, and give each other tips when you both have interviews at the same site but different days! View it as an asset that you're both applying to the same places and you also know each other well - because you can really turn it into an advantage 🙂 Good luck!

I just noticed a pretty significant error on my CV. Should I/ can I send the corrected CV via email? Or address it in interviews?
How major are we talking? I can't think of any CV error crazy enough to worry that much about (provided it's only one error and your CV isn't riddled with errors). I wouldn't worry about it. Half the people prob won't even notice it and they will have forgotten about it by the time you get to interviews, at which point they will then give a really brief cursory review of yoru CV before meeting with you just to refresh their memory about any specific things they want to ask you. So you can bring corrected CVs (which I recommend doing anyway) to offer to them. But emailing it likely won't matter at this point. One error is extremely unlikely to make a difference at this point given all the other materials / data they're looking at.

Did you receive this phone call today (11/22) or yesterday (11/21)? I know some people got calls yesterday evening and I was giving up hope because I didn't get one so I am curious if there is still a chance!

They can tell you whether they will rank you or not, what they cannot tell you is the order you will be ranked.

That is correct. In most circumstances, assume it's a longshot and rank them if you can see yourself there in any scenario. I don't really see it as unfair in any light. You are free to not rank them as you choose.

Yesterday evening unfortunately - 11/22 was yesterday.

Thank you, that was actually a helpful way of reframing it in my head. Appreciate the encouragement!

Thank you! Waiting has been stressful and hearing your experience definitely helps put things back into perspective 🙂

I'm trying to decide if we're safe from e-mail/phone calls today through Sunday? What do y'all think?
Let's hope we can get a break for a few days and enjoy some turkeyyyyy. Deep breaths everyone

I looked at last year's thread and it looks like at least a couple of my sites sent out invites today. Ugh, we're never safe.

Have to complete SurveyMonkey survey and choose at least three of the following possible interview dates:
December 8, 12, 16; January 4, 11, 17
Interview in person or by phone

Does that mean that rejections will come out today? :wideyed:

I assume it means that the internship director is the one who sends out notifications, either way, and will not be emailing anyone until after Monday.

I believe in their brochure, they indicated that interview invites would go out today (11/23) by email, so the notice was an attempt to reduce (or increase!!) anxiety.

Any advice for how you handle it if you're already booked on possible dates that a site has offered? I have two other great interviews on those dates, so I sent an email to UIC asking if they would be willing to set up an alternative date or means of interviewing. I feel like canceling or trying to move another interview would be disrespectful to those who contacted me first, but I also would really like to go to UIC.

This process sucks.
