2016-2017 UCLA PRIME Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
anyone here got a UCLA secondary but no Drew secondary 🙁
Yeah, I got the UCLA Prime secondary but no Drew. I hope it didn't get deleted out of my spam box, but I probably just didn't get it.

Any recent applicants applied PRIME but received just the Geffen invite?

Has anyone gotten an interview yet?! I'm patiently waiting over here!

Here ya go

From their website. Last year's thread, people began receiving IIs right around the "Interview invitations will be sent by" date. http://medschool.ucla.edu/prime-program-faqs:

Interviews

When will I be notified if I have been granted an interview for UCLA PRIME?

Interview invitations will be sent by December 17th, 2017

When are the interview days for UCLA PRIME?

January 7th, 2017 ; January 8th, 2017; January 14th, 2017

Like Savage said, expect Mid December at the latest, but it could be a bit earlier this year since administration changed around some things regarding the application process.

What were some of those changes?

What were some of those changes?

From what I noticed, there was a change in deadline for submitting secondaries, a change in last day they send secondaries, and somewhere in the faq for PRIME it says something along the lines of "rolling". Also from last year's thread it seems that administration got feedback from applicants regarding the process (i.e. taking too long to get back) and according to some, they were planning to make changes for this cycle. Not sure if these changes apply to PRIME, but I think that if there were changes with the secondary process, they would change the interview invite process as well.

Are any of the UCLA PRIME applicants going to be at the Drew interview Mid November?

Lol was there no follow up to that question?

Lol I think my question is stupid and I was trying to figure out how to delete my previous post but I guess you cant..? Anyway, I'm confused about if the interviews are the CDU open pool or if it was for the people that were also doing PRIME CDU. But PRIME would have their own separate interview from the CDU one right?

I think prime interviews are separate and only on those January dates mentioned above and on the website.

Also, if past years' threads are any indication, no one is invited to interview at prime until the date they say is the last day for interview invitations. Kind of weird. I think this year the date is December 17th or something like that

Still a little confused on how this works.. If we get rejected by Prime, are we out of the running for UCLA then? If we applied to Prime, we wouldn't be expecting a separate interview for the regular UCLA MD program right? Has there been any instances where people have gotten an II for Prime, been rejected by Prime, but accepted into the regular MD program? That was the impression I got from their website but that's not the impression I got from reading past SDN posts.

I'm wondering about this as well. I feel like most schools with special programs will generally still consider you for regular MD if you get rejected from that program, but I'd like to confirm if this is the case for UCLA.

Well on the secondary I remember there was an actual question that asked "if you are not offered a spot in the PRIME program, would you like to be considered for the David Geffen regular MD program?"

Does anyone else remember this?

Yes this was at the top where you specified which PRIME program as well.

You are considered for Geffen, yes, but it's subsequent. My issue is that it is secondary. Geffen has been giving out interviews for months, so mid December if you're rejected for PRIME interview that's when they would consider you for reg MD II. That seems worrisome.

Further, I'm sure PRIME interviews more than they plan to accept, just like any other program, then if you do Interview and are eventually rejected, then you won't be considered for regular MD acceptance until late Jan, or Feb. At least that's what my understanding of the procedure is.

I wish they would do it simultaneously. Hopefully, PRIME is considerate of this disadvantage and rejects as soon as they know you aren't a good fit so you can still be considered for Geffen early on. I've only seen two posts in the Geffen thread about being rejected PRIME and receiving the Geffen II.

Ah I see what you're saying. Yes hopefully they do consider the disadvantage but I do not know.

When I called a few weeks back the person told me it was a concurrent screen. However i think you're right and she may have been confused.

One thing that's been consistent though is that if you get a prime interview, it counts for both Geffen and prime in the event of a prime rejection but Geffen interest

Edited my post but I meant to say she said it was a concurrent screen!

Do these people have an email for their admissions office? I cant find anything on the website and I dont want to email a specific person.

Does anyone else think the prime program may have shifted to giving secondaries to everyone and no longer screening? Just seems really weird that no one has popped in here to say they've been passed up for a secondary...

I think that's definitely possible. I received my secondary 8/25 and I think my MCAT score was released 8/23 in the evening so that is a rather fast turn around.

i called to make sure a couple of weeks ago, and they told me they do screen for this program.

I also have a question of my own. By no means I am trying to turn this into a political argument and this might be a totally ignorant comment on my part, but how do you guys think programs like these will be affected with the new president?

The reason I am not creating a new thread out of this is because I want to ask people that are genuinely interested in serving underserved populations. I am sorry if I am breaking any rules/bothering anyone.

I dont think UCs get too much federal funding, seeing as how they are state schools. Either way I think programs like PRIME just became even more important.

I think we'll be fine. Funding for PRIME very much comes from the state level. This just makes the work we do that much more important. Please continue on your path and be the leaders/physicians/advocates your communities need.

Thank you guys for taking time to reply. My main concern is not funding (it is important), but I was more worried about the free clinics that work with and help undocumented people out.

Neekzg, i absolutely agree with your statement. At times likes these if we don't believe firmly in what we do, who else will?

So I was looking at past year's threads and it seems that PRIME interviews 77-78 applicants and accepts like 18 outright, only accepting more as individuals withdraw their acceptance.

What I didn't see in any of those however was whether or not any of the 77 interviewees who didn't get accepted PRIME were accepted into Geffen. IIRC, the interview counts for both right?

Anybody wanna call admissions? 😀

do many people get the secondary for this? very selective screen?

Just a bit over 200. Only 75-80 IIs given out.

Just curious-Where did you get the 200 number? I've tried looking on their admissions page and they don't give out a lot of information about secondaries
Good luck! 🙂 fingers crossed for you

Are they giving out the II's all at once? or is it gonna be throughout December?

Apparently last year they sent out all the interview invites between Dec 16-18th (not including the ones that got taken out from the interview waitlist). Not sure if they are going to do the same this year though

I think all the initial ones go out at once close to the date. So worse case, 9 days, hopefully less.

They release more as initial ones withdraw I believe.
