2016 Nontrad Applicants' Progress Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thought I would stop by, haven't been on sdn basically since the term started.

Updates ; 4 rejections - 15 still no word. Pretty much put this cycle out of my mind.

Classes going well - set top score for my advanced cell physiology class for one of my three exams - then have the other two, a midterm Friday final Monday this week (such a strange way to schedule that but whatever)

Bio lab class (400 level) was basically grad level - full reigns to do whatever we wanted - and had a very successful bit of research on HAC1 mutant plants and caffeine resistance - and have 100% points in the class - and just have to present our poster tomorrow at a symposium.

Gotta find some positives - no II's is a bit depressing. Press on regardless

You guys (and gals)... I was just accepted into Miami! So happy that I'm crying a bit. First acceptance!:banana::banana:

Congratulations!! We might be classmates next year! Did you apply to both programs, and if so, which would you choose?

And @mavric1298 , good to hear you're rocking your classes. Have you checked to see if the schools you haven't heard from extend invites until January-March? I've read many "got invited in January-February and was accepted!" so there's still a strong chance for IIs.

I applied MD only. I'm finishing up a PhD right now so didn't feel the need to go after anything but the MD. Good luck deciding between the two! I think if you are interested in the MPH then it would be difficult to turn down the option to finish that in the same time as the MD.

I wouldn't give up on the app cycle just yet, @mavric1298. Invites are still going out. Perhaps some of the schools are receptive to update letters?

Been following this thread for months, but decided to finally make an account for this post, but I JUST GOT MY FIRST INTERVIEW AT MY STATE SCHOOL!!! Graduated with a 2.5 GPA from a top 10 Uni back in 2013 and spent the last 2 years destroying every class in my post-bac. I'M SO HAPPPPPPY!!!! Keep kicking ass guys!! I love following your guys progress!

Congrats! (despite the fact that I cannot agree with your user name)

Sorry to be a noob here, but what do you guy's mean by your "state" school? Is that just a school in your current state of residence or just any "state" university? Thanks 🙂

Current state you qualify as in-state for. Since the vast majority of schools accept a much larger percentage of in-state (IS) than out of state (OOS) applicants, state schools are usually a higher chance of acceptance.

It references to med school in their own home state. It is said state schools favor their own over applicants from outside of their state, except for California of course.

The above, with caveat that "state school" on SDN can also be referring to public schools that give preference to their residents. Schools that are private generally don't give preference to residents versus non-residents of that state.

yeah I'm gonna hate too. I hateeeeee Brady.

And checked my portals for the first time in forever, a few of them are straight gone - looks like website updates etc so the old links don't work anymore, but, saw I'm on hold at OHSU (my second state school because of heritage) ,NYMC and Drexel. Drexel's hold message is kinda a dick rejection with just a glimmer of hope -

"Thank you for your application. Your file has been reviewed by a member of our Admissions Committee. While we have decided not to invite you for an interview at this time, we would like to re-evaluate your application again in the spring should interview spots remain. We have many completed applications to review and wish to hold on a final decision on your application until later in the cycle. Again, thank you for your interest in Drexel College of Medicine."

Also on hold at Drexel. I love the ambiguous "Spring" re-eval.

It's because you dont like tom brady

Any of you fine non-trads still waiting on that first acceptance? I've been on 5 interviews here and radio silence on all of them! Granted only one school has reached the timeframe of expected news but this waiting is just awful.

I agree the waiting is awful. I wish the med school acceptance was set up as a match system the way residency acceptance is, with everyone finding out on a single day. It would be a lot less stressful. I hope you hear some good news this week! :luck:

Unfortunately I think with the break coming up most people who interviewed in the past 2/3 weeks are going to be waiting anxiously until January. Who invented holidays anyway?!

I gotta wait an extra 3 weeks just because of an imaginary dude in a red suit 🙁

potentially could hear on Friday. I was about a week later of those who heard last week at a school I interviewed at, so fingers crossed!

Definitely still waiting. One interview will get back to me as early as Jan. I have another interview in Jan.

Waiting is pretty awful... I try not to think about it too much... Hard to avoid.

Santa isn't real??!? Way to ruin everything :'(
I won't use the word real when describing said Santa, because even in mathematics real and imaginary are indeed opposites. However thinking mathematically, an imaginary entity is defined by impossible action (delivering toys to billions in one night, flying reindeer that couldn't possibly generate the lift for all those toys, etc.) but is still in existence. You cannot see an imaginary number, you cannot touch it, and it doesn't exactly make sense. But it's there, it has meaning, and its actions are inexplicable by any "real" numbers. So saying Santa Claus is imaginary is no need for alarm. Some of the most important and least explainable things (in math, science, and Christmas) are imaginary.

Still waiting on my first II. Thought I did it right... studied my butt off for the MCAT, MSAR'd, had people read everything I submitted, applied to a range of MD & DO schools (though I suppose I picked popular ones on both fronts -- SO has zero job options outside larger cities), and... Nada. Some of the unlikely ones have been (relatively) swift rejections, but I'm have silence from 18, holds from 2, rejections from 3 (1 regional hopeful, 2 relatively high stat/competitive).

Honestly, I started thinking about my app for next year. Picked up two new volunteering gigs (one clinical, one non). Hoping an additional ~200 hours (over a longer term), earlier AMCAS submission (june instead of july), and another few schools will help me secure something...

I think there's still plenty of time to find you acceptance though!

Definitely still time. I have a good friend who applied non-traditional last year... He only got one interview invitation before February... By April he landed a 5th interview, but still didn't get his one and only acceptance until after he had already started re-writing for next year.

I'm sure he's going to be an amazing physician.

Hang in there! It only takes one!

I couldn't possibly like this post more.

A couple of the schools that I interviewed at were impressively late with delivering the news lol. The wait was really awful, so I feel for you, but that makes receiving the good news that much more exciting! Hang tight and good luck!

Cawolf, which medschool will you be going to? You help out a lot in the MCAT section so I'm curious what you decided.

Nice! I have a friend who was a very competitive applicant for every school and ended up in San Antonio for medical school, because it impressed her so much. She could have went anywhere in Texas. Another friend is an anesthesiology intern right now at the health center, but he doesn't like the city all that much.

This is an amazing idea. You rank all the people you interview and let the computer algorithms do their work.

25 applications
6 pre II rejections
1 pre II hold (UCSD)
2 II
1 Acceptance - MUSC (Charleston, SC)

Submitted pretty late and secondaries were completed from mid Sept-Mid Oct.
My list is super top heavy, but my MCAT is weak, not sure what's going on w/the 17 remaining

What does "pre II" mean? Do you think it would have made a difference if you had applied in June? Good Luck!! And Congratulations on the acceptance!!

I am rooting for you!! And I'm so sorry you're in this terrible waiting period. I wonder if they know how much it pains us...

In somewhat similar news, I'm 9 weeks out from my interview at my top choice program with no word either way.

Thanks! Yeah I had no idea how much this waiting would suck haha
My top choice won't release any decision till March :bang:

II is interview invite, so a rejection pre-II would mean a rejection without an interview.

I hope one of the 4 Texas schools I interviewed at will eventually accept me. Preferably UT Southwestern 😛 but really any of them.

Thank you! I'm also hoping you get into UTSW, but if not... it would be really great if one or more of you lovely nontrads ends up at the same school as me, whichever one it ends up being. 🙂
