2016 Nontrad Applicants' Progress Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
do we have to wear black turtlenecks and nike sneakers?

That actually does make me feel a bit better @entresuspiros, thanks. I've heard a fair bit from various people about unusually stressful interviews at Downstate. Maybe it's just part of their plan. IF YOU CAN MAKE IT HERE...

Effing New Yorkers. 🙂

ETA: omg, I just remembered the parts where she asked me to describe my meditation style to her and explain how it's done and then describe how it feels and so I RAISED MY HAND and explained the illusion of separation and our capacity to release our mind's adherence to the binary of I/other via anapanasati and shikantaza and then *went into a mild trance state*--with commentary.

So basically I just dissociated like a total schizoid and described the fundamentals of my future cult.

Hey does anyone think it's a real thing that you can write a university after an acceptance elsewhere and say something like "I'm going to accept over here, but I like you, so if you want to interview me...now is the time."?
I read you can do this letter of intent thing once in a cycle but hell if I know...
Anyway I have the one acceptance but I can't qualify for their loans (all private, no federal) so I can't go there and need to decline...in a week...so I'm wondering if I can get some use out of it before I do so.

Not as old as some of you, but I'm mid twenties and I've had to battle some pitfalls in undergrad. A few days ago it become all worth it - next year I'll matriculate to one of my top MD choices about 4 years since I've graduated college 🙂
Are you for sure going to Tufts?
I'm also young and nontrad, welcome to the thread 😀

Thanks! There are only a few other schools that I applied to and didn't get rejected from that I'd have a hard decision to make over Tufts . But out of all my interviews, Tufts is the most awesome school! I did my grad school there and I'm from the area so it just really clicks with me!

Cool! Yeah I loved Tufts on my interview day but I'm very worried about the expense. We'll see how expensive it is after financial aid 🙂
Either way I'm super happy they offered me (and you) a spot 🙂

Also, because I technically have no IS in Massachusetts, all my OOS schools are hovering the 50-60k mark, kind of have little choice -_-

haha sorry! and thank you 🙂 I meant that because I'm not as old I obviously don't have as many years of being non trad, aka achievements and life experience as you 🙂 still an honor to be given the privilege to pursue the same dream we all have, despite age!

Yeah me too... but that is the only negative I know of. If you end up going, you'll love the area. Boston is such a wonderful city - I was there for the past 7 years and I'm eager to go back. Happy for you as well!
Seriously, am I the only person that dislikes Boston? I can't wait to get out of here.

I find I can't do anything here without money and its full of annoying, competitive, entitled people. And contrary to friends' warnings when I moved, working-class born and raised Bostonians are much nicer and funnier than they described.

Hell yeah it felt good withdrawing from (aka REJECTING) a bunch of schools just now

insert evil laughter of vindication

Especially after GWU rejected me yesterday right after I decided to withdraw from hold status, but before I could actually do it lol
How do you withdraw pre-II? Do you just email the school?

Couldn't find a option in portal for the schools I withdrew from so I just sent a polite email to the admissions office identifying myself, thanking them, withdrawing, and asking for them to confirm.
"Thank you for ignoring me until now so that I could get the pleasure of rejecting you."

Have any nontrads interviewed at Quinnipiac yet (so hard to keep track)? Any advice on the interviews? I know they are traditional-style, so any help is appreciated!

It is two 30 minutes one-on-one interview. Very conversational. I have like 1-2 ethical questions but that is pretty much standard🙂 Lmk if you have any other questions.

the dean of my IS school (that I am doing my SMP at) said "why not" to meeting with me, but wants to see my undergrad transcripts first.

what sucks is that I am KILLING this program, but I don't have a transcript yet to send over. So all he's going to see is my dumpster fire of an undergrad record (he apparently does not care that I went to grad school in the biomedical sciences before and got a 4.0 because it wasn't an SMP specifically)

whatever, yolo. I made my mistakes and if he does not want to meet with me after he sees this, his loss.

If you don't have transcripts yet, I would include a cover letter with information about your SMP and your performance in it so far. When will you finish the SMP?

Hey All!

I am a definite lurker of this thread. Love to hear all the amazing news.

So I have 4 II total, one finished and wait-listed. The rest are coming up.

I work at a medical school and while it is out of my reach based on my stats alone, I know that the rest of my application can make a compelling case for, at the very least, an interview.

I don't have a relationship with the dean or anyone in the admissions department, but I do work for the school.
I have not received a II from them and I am starting to be anxious about seeing the pre-II rejection email.

Is there is anything I can do at this point to bring my application to their attention? My boss, a professor and faculty at the school, has emailed the dean twice so far, but it has not changed anything.

I was thinking of maybe sending an email, or see if the Dean wants to get a coffee to discuss my application. I just do not want to come across as desperate or an annoyance. Thoughts? Is there anything I can do, or should I just patiently continue waiting 🙁

Best of Luck to all!

[filler, to be edited with my first II, which will arrive Tuesday. -NonTrad16's sleep typing subconscious]

Damn you, subconscious. No dice today. Some of my schools are inching closer to my submission date.

Hope everyone else is finding good fortune, or is doing better at relaxing than I am! Here's to tomorrow (another hump day).

At this point in the game personally, I would say if you have a significant update to your file and your school accepts them, go ahead and send it. If it's just a 'Hey, remember me?' email then tread lightly. Your having submitted the secondary already means you're interested and that you haven't been rejected yet means they're still considering you. Bugging them (especially the Dean if people have already tried on your behalf and you have no relationship with him/her personally) for something other than a file update might even have the opposite effect.

There are many, many people still waiting to hear from schools they applied to months ago. Last year (I've seen from stalking threads) IIs were still going out in December and beyond. You're one of literally thousands in a pile and may just have to wait your turn, y'know? In my opinion best thing to do is hang tight, and something does come up that warrants a real update then (again, assuming they accept updates) make them aware.

Best of luck to you, stay strong!
