2018-2019 APPIC Internship Interview Thread

Y’all. It’s Monday. After a long holiday weekend. :scared:

let the week begin:xf:

Before interview notifications started rolling in, I told my husband that I kind of wished that I’d only get an interview to one site so that I wouldn’t have to choose come ranking time. This way, I wouldn’t have to feel pressured about ranking sites that I feel like I should go to (based on prestige or competitiveness of site) higher than sites that may personally fit me better. Now that interview notifications are rolling in though, I’m like “I’M SORRY APPIC GODS. I WAS KIDDING. TAKE MY SANITY AS SACRIFICE. GIVE ME ALL THE INTERVIEWS.”

Tattoos ftw!

How many does everyone have? I have 5, but they’re all pretty hide-able 🙂

I am beyond counting at this point... 2 sleeves (30 hours each?), a stomach piece (5 hours), a side piece (6hours), oh and a back piece... I sat for that MoFo for 10 hours straight- broke a record at the shop for that one.

do you think they ever think of us? of how much this wait is killing us?

Hey y'all! Just wanted to chime in my 2 cents about clothes/appearance for interviews...I also have curly, unruly hair but I will not be straightening it for the aforementioned frizz reasons! I also probably won't wear an all black suit, I am thinking light gray suit with a nicely patterned blouse underneath. I have a large but professional tote I will probably carry, especially since I'll be travelling.

While it's probably true that I'm overthinking my interview appearance a bit, I also remember that in my 2nd year I had difficulty finding a prac site for a while and a faculty member told me that I should consider straightening my hair to look a little more "put together." Even though I personally think that's BS, to me that indicates that some people DO notice (and make interpretations based on) those types of things.

I keep vacillating between "If a site doesn't want me because my purse is too large/suit isn't black/hair is too curly, then I probably don't even want to go there," and "I will literally take anything I can get, even if it's not actually a good fit." Anyone else??

I have 3! Also pretty hide-able, but sometimes the one on my shoulder is visible (if I wear a white or slightly sheer top or if I wear a tank with a sweater and the sweater shifts to the side or something)

I hope I get to meet some of you super cool tatted up people on interviews!!

Geez, I'm gone for 24 hours and have to spend 20 minutes just catching up, forumfam!

I'm intentionally choosing to break some of the unspoken rules when it comes to attire. My plan is to dress professionally but to make sure I feel very comfortable with what I'm wearing. I may not wear a full suit. My hair will not be in a bun and it will not be straightened. Some of my tattoos might peek out. I might have some pet hair or baby drool on me. If a site disregards me because they don't like my outfit/shoes/hair/body art/monkey onesie then maybe I need to not be there because if they're super picky about physical appearance, I'm definitely not the best candidate for their position. I thank the gods every time I'm able to take a shower these days (#momlife) so perfection isn't even an option here! I do wonder how much site selection determines what is appropriate for attire. I'm not on the UCC/VA/research track I see for a lot of folks on here and there are certainly some places where I think a suit would be much more of a requirement.

And FWIW, our DCT made a comment after mock group interviews one year that after seeing all of the students in black suits, she thought everyone looked the same. She and I agreed that wearing a shell/blouse/shirt with a color to set oneself apart was a good idea just to help interviewers remember who you are. Anyone have a neon green patterned blouse with an over-the-top ruffly collar I could borrow?

You're my hero. And A+ to you and everyone else who's tatted! Same!

Also 5! Three of them are pretty hide-able, then I have one on each wrist that are sort of hide-able with long sleeves.

Anyone else feel that they need less coffee to get themselves up in the morning because the incessant panic and anxiety is much more effective? My alarm goes off and I'm like

And I feel this way the entire day and then wake up the next morning and do it all over again. The struggle, y'all. The struggle.

@tvc,

Have you booked a room yet for your Dec. 1st interview? I hope it's not too creepy that I came back to the earlier discussion and found you to ask you, but I've spent far too long trying to game the systems of Priceline and Hotwire and now I'm just feeling like I should just book something like a normal person. But, I don't want to be left out of any interviewee pre-interview run-ins at the hotel and then look like a loner with no social skills when everybody else is chatting it up like old friends during free time at the interview site.

Neurotic? Me? Of course not. I'm not sure why anyone would think such a thing...

Hi,I haven't booked yet. will be doing it today. There is one 2miles away from the relic center, it's pretty good.

unfortunately i don't expect to hear from many this week - based on the past years' data it looks like there is a gap between those before thanksgiving and those in the final week acceptable
but i hope i am wrong!
lord knows i'm not closing my email anyway

One or two interviews is way cheaper than seven or more - as long as you match, who cares?? 😉

Hi Everyone! I'm sorry for being so MIA on updates - I had an insane amount of family over for thanksgiving weekend and haven't touched my computer since Wednesday! The updates to the master list will be up shortly.

No worries - you rock for doing this at all :joyful: Hope you had a wonderful holiday!!:banana:

I have three...one is on my foot, so hideable...but I usually don’t. Hehe

Edit: these tattoo posts made me so happy!

I was worried about my tattoos (I have 5 but all pretty hideable) before starting grad school, but since I want to work for the VA I have found they are actually a rapport builder considering almost every Veteran has at least one! ha! The two on my foot are almost always visible when I wear flats and I get comments and questions on them almost daily while seeing clients. I like to think it makes me the "cool doctor." hahaha

This is the same experience I have had working in the VA! My tattoos have been a great rapport builder and I almost always get questions/comments about mine as well. Cool doctors unite!

It would be cool if we had some overlap!

For sure!! Do you all have any specific tracks/areas you consistently applied to? Mine were all sites that had PTSD, SUD, and/or dual diagnosis tracks/rotations.
