2018-2019 APPIC Internship Interview Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I can’t help but notice that a few college counseling centers that extended interview invites by this time last year have yet to appear on this forum. I wonder if more people applied to them this year, which is causing the delayed notification?

Welp after my first rejection about an hour ago (and no invites), I think I’m going to stop whining and catastrophizing and pull myself together and maybe keep thinking positive... or I can drink wine and eat Thai food and start that tomorrow.. yeah option 2 it is!

Have you tried those canned sparkly wines from TRader Joes? I recommend the peach.

Also, that rejection was a tough one to swallow for sure. It sounded like a great program...like 239 other people thought so lol too :dead:

It is my personal opinion that Thai food solves all of life's problems. 🙂

@HappyPhDHopeful and @Deadblue did either of you end up getting the doodle email from the Denver VAMC yet?

Nope 🙁 I was gonna ask this same question. Earlier when I spoke to the man organizing it all he felt he would for sure get it out tonight. I politely let him know if I didn't receive it by tomorrow afternoon I'd follow-up with him, and he said definitely do that. He's probably just really busy.

I think pairing it all with 4 episodes of new girl will be perfect

What is up with college counseling? I really wasn't aware it was so competitive. I've got 2 years of prac at colleges and 2 rejections no invites

I mean, they typically get fewer apps than VA's and other sites I think. Idk. I don't want to come off as abrasive because it actually grinds my gears that this is a common thought. It is very challenging work as is all of psych... again not trying to be abrasive or negative in any way. I just want to work in this setting for my career and consider myself to be competitive so I feel kinda bad when others (not saying that anyone here is doing/has done this, I have heard this from individuals IRL) think it is just easy peasy.

I find college counseling to be very rewarding. I have 2 years of prac at colleges, which I guess I thought was pretty good given that some of the sites I've applied to ask for a year...my experience has been the clients I have seen at college have significant mental health issues and I take it very seriously. I'm pretty much just in a panic after 2 rejections and no invites. I applied almost exclusively to college sites and am concerned🙁

I also highly recommend the $3 bottles of wine from Trader Joes...

Hopefully the storm before the calm. You are Beyonce always.

UCC's like well rounded clinicians that focus on multiculturalism... If you can't speak strongly about (like STRONGLY) it then it's difficult. Most UCC folks have 3-4 years of UCC pracs so that's hard. I have 4 plus substance use exp (MI, conduct violations), detox evaluations, over 60+ hours of outreach, health outreach experience and harm reduction stuff

So if you have 0 experience in outreaches or substance use or ED or something it's tricky.

Loved the pace of college counseling. I’m more worried I won’t be able to snag a permanent position in a busy area so I only applied to a few.

I think also with the numbers, a lot of the sites are maybe in less populated areas so they don’t draw as many applicants? I applied to Utah State because I liked they had more testing opportunities than the school in Salt Lake but definitely its going to be a hard year away, in the snow for me if I get matched there. Last time I drove in the snow I almost took out someone’s mailbox...

THANK YOU! People think I just sit around and do nothing. I am a counseling assistant (like a GAship) and have up to 17 hours of face to face contact a week not including trainings, notes, etc (30-40 week in total) high distress, high suicidally/homicidally, chronic substance use, and crisis after crisis... And detox after detox evaluations. Overdoses weekly that we have to assess.

Yes these things are likely factors, methinks.

I def noticed multicultural is a theme in the brochures! I actually only have one year of college counseling, but my area is very diverse so I was able to get a ton of different clients in throughout the years. Word on the street in this area from previous applicants was that they were also sweating college sites without prior experience and had a hard time without some experience 🙁 but honestly I’m starting to think maybe TD really do just post our apps on a wall and throw darts!
I believe in all of you!

My knowledge of how our UCC reviews apps is very concise, many committees, interns chose some, clinicians chose some then they decide to gather who they are inviting. They really look at fit and interpersonal style. Our program is awesome so if anyone is interested in a rural UCC with awesome training PM me... For postdoc positions. We have a very busy center and testing center plus we are merging with behavioral health.

YES YES YES.

It is very hard when people crap on counseling centers and then I have to resist the urge to tell them this about their opinion:

[EDIT] Well my image will not load but it is a gif of Justin McElroy saying "It's trash."

Also, P.S. If you need a distraction from this fiery hellscape we are all living in, check out the podcast My Brother, My Brother, and Me. Hilarious.

I’m so sorry I know how you feel as I’m sure many here do. Watch, soon you’ll get some great news! You can’t come out of two years of college and not be competitive!

Yeah it was a lot! I did get an invite though! Many of them were ones I knew were coming but it still stings. I was surprised by Sepulveda .. TBH. I still have 7 more sites to hear from... so... here's hoping!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm PsyD and did a diagnostic prac year...many of the college sites don't care about my 200+ direct assessment hours. I have a good amount of outreach hours, but lower hours overall. And I know you are right about the multiculturism- I tended to emphasize "advocacy and social justice." I really have no substance abuse experience, although I have a lot of previous experience working with sexual trauma and intimate partner violence. There's always second round I suppose if it doesn't work out+pissed++pity+

Hey hey hey, it’s not over! I assume you applied to more. You will get interviews!!!

Psy.D here also!

Picking out clothes for tomorrow, and I made my decision based on what had pockets large enough to hold my phone so I can literally have it on me the whole day while I'm at my placement. "If I wear a jean jacket with this dress, I can have my phone...but that means I have to shave my legs...in late November...yep, totally worth it."

This is where we're at, y'all. I'd willingly shave my legs in late November to better enable me to have access to my phone.

This is exactly what we do at my site as well.

PS. Loving the UCC love and descriptions.

-Full Site Name: Samaritan Health Services (Oregon)
-Track: Health Psychology
-Invite or rejection: Invite
-Date of Notification: Monday November 27
-How You Were Notified: Mass E-Mail
-Interview Date(s): January 16 and January 17
-If & How You’re Staying Sane: Water, Yoga, SDN (healthy); All of my worst tendencies (unhealthy) (fair mix between the two)

Plenty of rejections as well but wanted to throw this one in the pot. Canada has a universal notification date where everyone finds out about all of the sites on the same day so this blog has been a life-saver for camaraderie around the U.S. sites - thank you.

This is where having a smart watch comes in handy too  being slick and casually sticking my arm under tables and rubbing up my sleeve to check...

OKAY - the invite master list has been updated :soexcited::highfive:

Thanks for being so patient forumfam!

p.s. the rejection list and any messages sent to my inbox will be updated tomorrow
You are such a BOSS!!! Again, thank you SO MUCH for taking this on! 🙂

One of the people from my program suggested this last year during a post-match internship Q&A, and I wish I had taken her up on this advice.

Hahahahaha that’s so funny, definitely helpful during this stressful time. They can be super distracting though. It was a gift few years back and I have to be careful where I wear it. I don’t want to convey certain perceptions to clients-especially in Medicaid community mental health.

It's not over till it's over! I have 16 sites...16 left. This will be a rough month.

I just creeped on your Facebook... I wanted to apply to your site so bad, but your site's internship year ends too late for me to graduate August 2019, which I need to do. Womp womp.

Just out of curiosity how do you creep on members’ facebooks here? Lol

I’m also curious if they did an automatic toss out of applicants from certain schools...
