2018-2019 APPIC Internship Interview Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm not sure what UCLA is up to this year with their invites, and it seems like they're sending mass emails that may be specific to the tracks people applied to. Has anyone heard from the neuropsych or geropsych-neuropsych tracks?
They have definitely changed their style of notification this year. Last year everything went out at once. Yours is like the fifth question about the Neuro track. I don’t think they have notified yet. No word here at least.

I had my first interview on Monday! And two scheduled for next week. I'm also looking for interview tips so please send them my way too.

Our DCT (School Psych) sent us this VERY LONG list of interview prep questions...but I've actually found them really helpful!! My fiance and I keep them on our phones and when we go for hikes, he runs through them with me. He's a school psych too so the feedback rocks!

Maybe we should make a separate post for interview tips and most common questions, including questions that threw people off in years previous?

How are y'all handing the "tell me about yourself" line?

I'm sure the TD doesn't want to hear about my current habits:
"I love to refresh my email and check SDN. I also spend several hours a day reviewing APPIC and my excel doc that tells me information about your site. I enjoy cuddling with my dog, while binging tv shows, so I can successfully cope with anxiety and imposter syndrome all while comprehensively ignoring my other professional and personal responsibilities."
Our clinical coordinator suggested a brief academic overview (undergrad, grad school, year in grad school), where you're from if you want, brief overview of clinical experience, brief overview of research experience if you're at a place with a research emphasis. Apparently it doesn't have to be much more in-depth than the kind of basic info you would put in your cover letter and/or essays!
Our DCT actually suggested a slightly different approach to the "tell me about yourself" question. He said to try to give a response that contains information that is NOT on our CVs and is instead slightly more personal and authentic so that sites can get a sense of who we are as people beyond just what's on our CVs or in our cover letters. In the 2 mock interviews I've done with faculty, both asked this question and I talked about some of the things I wrote about in my autobiographical essay and then linked that to processes that would help me succeed, goals, and how that particular internship site could fulfill thiem. So I both "told something about myself" that went beyond my experiences on my CV and APPI and then explained how that stuff about myself has set me up to thrive at each site. Just another approach to think about 🙂

I LOVE this!

I was wondering when people have interviews coming up? I have one next week and feel like I'm getting stuck with how I should respond with some questions due mostly to nerves. Anyone have any tips or resources they're using to practice (other than the Workbook?).

I have one next week as well! My program is doing mock interviews tomorrow, so I’m hoping that will help! But otherwise, I have no tips or resources 🙁

Would be down for an internship interview practice/questions thread...I'm struggling with the "describe an ethical dilemma you've had" one

Super awesome. Thanks!

Would be down for an internship interview practice/questions thread...I'm struggling with the "describe an ethical dilemma you've had" one

It can also be a case that had ethical implications (e.g., suicidality/hospitalizing someone, vulnerable adult, child abuse) but never rose to the level of having to take substantive action. They pretty much want to see you talk through the thought process of what you did/would have done in an ethical dilemma type situation.

Yes, definitely this! My morning brain did not connect that that might not be in everyone's cover letter.

I was told in my mock interview that the "tell me about yourself" question is often so the interviewer can remember who you are, since they may not have reviewed your cover letter lately; repeating some of the basic info can refresh their memory, and then tying that into your connection to the site gets the conversation started.

Anyone else heard from Jesse Brown VA for Neuro Track. I haven’t heard back from them. Was making sure it was a mass email sent out.

Congrats on those interviews rolling in forum fam!!! Those of you who got rejections or no news yet, hang in there! Good news is coming!

Sending everyone positive vibes for the rest of this week!! I have a question - so I applied to Texas Child Study Center & people have received interviews & rejections, but I've heard nothing. What does everyone make of this? I'm confused. Am I in some pile somewhere...like maybe a backup? That's my wishful thinking. My anxious thinking is saying they never got my application. I need ALL the desserts. All of them. Good luck to me finding interview attire...

I am in this same position?! Confused but hoping it may be some kind of wait-list situation?!

My name was nowhere on it and they offered one date option? Looks Mass to me.

I may/may not have seen this answered, but it is at all common to simply not hear from a site and/or be left off of some mass email?

There are three sites now that I know have sent some offers within the past one to two weeks and I chronically check my email, but I am on the receiving end of radio silence.

Does anyone else work in a building that challenges cell phone reception?

My very first invite was a phone call, which went to voicemail, because it didn't go through. I nearly dropped the dynamometer when I saw that.

I'm a bit late on this conversation but yes... I work in a bunker like building two floors underground and the running scuttlebutt is there's extra cement between the basement (where I am) and the 2nd floor. Calls hardly ever work down there so I just imagine there may be a moment that I run out of the office and up a flight of stairs to answer the phone, and with my coordination I'll be happy if I manage not to trip on the way up

Our DCT told us sites are supposed to contact you eventually. She said it's normal for them to wait closer to the December 15 deadline to send out the rejections. So they could either be doing interview offers in waves, or they just haven't sent out rejections yet.

As a School Psych PhD Student, My interview invites/rejections won't start rolling in until December 6 and it is TORTURE! Anyone else in the same boat? I have loved seeing how supportive y'all have been towards each other!!! This site is fantabulous.
Hang in there; I'm in a similar boat! I applied to mostly UCCs (due early Nov) and my other sites have deadlines that haven't come up yet, so I have heard NOTHING. But it weirdly helps to not see the name of my sites pop up, since I'm not hearing! And our time will come....

Dynamometer! It's a hand-strength test. It's also the name of an engine check machine, but I'm not doing to much engine checking at our hospital 😛.
I don't care. I'm going to continue picturing you struggling to hoist a T Rex arm so you can cram your giant dinosaur thermometer in his armpit to see if he has a fever.

Well,

It's time to go provide back to back to back to back testing feedback. I hope my return involves a bunch of awesome news for y'all.

Question for you all: After an interview invite, are you guys replying at all to the TD? I don't want to clog up their email but I'm inclined to reply thanking them for the invitation and sharing (in a much more professional tone) how friggin' excited I am to meet them and see their site and ask all the questions and such.

I replied to the one (so far) invite I received, but that was part of their instructions in order to confirm one of the interview dates. But in my response I did all the professionally appropriate excitement stuff.

Do you mind sharing their interview dates, since this was one that didn't have them listed on APPIC? I applied to a different track here, so I'm just curious what tentative dates they may offer 🙂

What sites are you all using to book multi-city flights? I'm trying to find good prices and sites that tell me if I should book now or wait, etc. Any suggestions?

Is it that boxed Franzia someone gave to you? 😉

A friend from last year told me to just book one ways and wait it out until you know for sure what your travel is going to look like. She ended canceling some interviews after hearing from better sites that she wanted more. That's just her advice though.

I've heard Southwest is the best because they don't charge you for a cancellation and credit you. Plus they have a rewards program (other airlines do too). I applied for the Alaska Airline credit card and applied for the Southwest card so I could get bonuses and points. I need to rack them up in order to bring my kids home LOL

For standard fares, I believe it's that they do not charge you change fees. So, you can "cancel" a flight, but you have to use that money towards another SW flight within the year.

Thank you! I'm actually finding cheaper flights for some airlines other than Southwest. Also, just figured out how to search in incognito mode so they don't raise prices, but everyone else probably already knew about that. I'm looking at booking one-ways, and then also doing Amtrak or Greyhound for some neighboring states if the interviews are close together. I don't know when to start booking though considering I still haven't heard from 9 sites.

I stand corrected - I was working off poor memory.

Ya- I am planning to do a mix of different airlines due to the geographical locations some interviews are in. There doesn't appear to be a straightforward way of doing it (all one airline, cheapest airline, etc.). I've barely started looking at airlines so I may not know too much at this point.

Staying sane: the weather is beautiful
That is awful! What a terrible emotional rollercoaster, I'm so sorry. I hope you're able to pull up some mindfulness strength and enjoy the wonderful weather.

Oh yes, sorry, my excitement got the best of me! The dates they offered for the adult track were Monday 12/18 or Wednesday 12/20!
