Take a look! Nova had 232 grads ALL matching into their first choice residency!! They must be the best med school in the US, because no ivy leagues are listed on that page.

Why should someone attend an MD school when STATISTICALLY more DO schools are getting their first choice matches?! Please point out the flaws here, or just call all of these DO schools perfect

The term perfect is hyperbole but you’re missing the point. There is self selection in DO schools you’re ignorning. We both attend DO schools and let’s be honest how many students have you ever heard express any desire to attend an IVY program? Nobody gives a damn about that at DO schools and low-mid their MD school (for the most part). If majority of Nova kids match number 1 compared to an MD school where 65% match their number one then I’d say it’s likely those Nova kids are far happier and more fulfilled feeling. From their perspective they got exactly what they wanted out of medical school broadly speaking.

Dude what? You aren't even making sense anymore. If you get into the residency program that you wanted to be at then it is a perfect match, end of story. We said the OSU match list was a perfect list because the school has a clear mission, they have the resources to fulfill that mission, and those students go on to fulfill that mission because that is what they want to do. The match list has a wide variety of specialties, with literally the majority of people landing the exact programs they wanted. I am confused as to what you are all worked up about. If ANY school has there grads going to the exact fields and programs they want to go into then their match list is perfect. "Perfect" in this context is hyperbole. You are completely missing the point.
 
One thing I have realized over the years of DO match list is that the DO match list will never satisfy people because of two types of medical students:
-first type just wants to be a doctor in low stress environment and for them living in their home state near family (potentially SO/Kids) where they see patients (8-5) is more important. And in fact going to a university based residency where they have to do research is a negative thing. Makes sense that more DO students would have this quality since they obviously did not care to push themselves as hard in UG as the people then went to top 10-20 schools (and i know there are the exceptions and those people work hard, experience bias and generally find something to be happy with)
-the other type is the super type A people (most people on SDN) that truly gets a huge amount of satisfaction with academic prestige and pushing themselves to be the best. For these people--first type does not register.. they just dont have the ability to understand a world where medical students could even want a quite life in primary care.. why would the not want the best?

I kind of started understanding this when I started watching Dave Ramsey. Him and his followers are staunch savers who cannot imagine taking any sort of debt---the security of saving as much as possible brings them joy. Dave Ramsey and his followers are always baffled by the other 2/3 of the population who get miserably if they are not spending and enjoying a nice car or vacation. I think the difference in perspective make it such that a lot of us just cannot relate.

This x 1000. Most of my class it seems like isn't shooting for some ivory tower spot because most of us are a bit older and a ton of people have kids and families and such. I also feel like the majority of people I've talked to in medical school, even at different schools, are going for location/lifestyle rather than prestige/money

I think the point here is that perfection in the match is both subjective and unique/specific to the student matching. If everyone on that list matched at a place they desired to go to, then yes, it is a perfect match list. In the end, the only person that the match matters to is the person matching to that program, not some outsider judging their preferences.

The other issue with reading a match list is you need expertise in the field.

For example, as far as IR fellowship goes, Rush is universally considered as a better fellowship than Brigham and Womens (Harvard). Even Medical College of Wisconsin is considered to be better in training in IR than BWH.

Obviously med students (or even most attendings who aren’t IR) are not gonna know that.

Thats very true. Its also true that personal preferences of the students and career goals matter a lot as far as rank lists go. For example someone going into IM who wants to be a community hospitalist is going to prefer a different program to someone going IM interested in cardiology or hem/onc, where exposure to the field of interest becomes a bigger deal in deciding which residency is better. Just looking at a match list ignores all of that.

I 100% care about lifestyle/location more than money/prestige. To the extent that not only will it influence the types of programs I apply to/interview at/rank, but also is influencing my specialty selection. (Still just a lowly first year but obviously specialty consideration doesn’t start suddenly the day before rank order list due date). And just as I DISpreferred Medical schools that emphasized research, I too DISprefer residency programs that emphasize research.

Couldn't agree more. Residency is all about fit. Everyone wants to have a prestigious institution name their diploma, but very few realize the true cost of it. Going to a big name place means that you will most likely be working among the smartest and most ambitious products of medical school. This means that you'd be hustling the entire time to prove yourself and live up to the expectations. You will be expected to participate in more research work than you probably like, do more calls at heavier workload centers, deal with more rigid hierarchy, work along more type-A/vicious personalities, etc...

Agreed. I’m absolutely planning to hustle during residency to take the best possible care of my patients and learn as much as possible so that three years from July I’m ready to be a competent hospitalist. I have absolutely no desire to hustle to “look cool” while doing it.

I agree with this. And I don’t want to have dedicated research time that takes away from this. My interests during and after residency are in patient care. Not research. Not wanting research doesn’t mean I don’t want to work hard and learn a lot to be a great doctor.
 
Anyone have NYITCOM's list? May have gone there had I not got into my top choice SUNY (hint: not stony brook).

100% true! I have avoided expressing this sentiment, but am going on the VERY rough rule of thumb thumb that university hospitals are better places for residency than community hospitals, but it's only a rule of thumb.

I have asked SDN Attendings if they know of the quality of the places that my kids have gotten into, and it's a resounding thumbs up on those programs.

The catch though, Goro, is that even though Rush is better regarded training wise than BWH, BWH is still MORE competitive and lands better jobs because practices want to say they have a Harvard trained doc.

“Yeah, but too bad you didn’t get more prestigious yet inferior overall training at Y”.

Our match list is probably the best it has been in years tbph. 12 EM, 3 ophtho, 5 anesthesia, 1 ENT, 3 derm, 3 ortho, 1 neurosurg, 6 rads, 3 general surgery. The list isn't complete (never is) but it looks pretty decent. 10 people went into psych, for anyone that is interested in that boat.

I have read down our FB match group but I haven't heard of an official list being released yet.

If I run into some free time I'll have a cold one and try typing out the ones from FB. Currently drowning in neuroanatomy though so we'll see.

People should be scared of EM because of the specialty itself lol who cares about saturation. I used to work in the ER and of all the docs that came through I asked them all the same question "are you happy with your choice of becoming and emergency physician". Every single Dr. I met (15+) said no besides one, and that guy had been out less than a year. Every one of them told me not to pick EM, and most seemed genuinely unhappy (not just with their Job). Moved away for med school, and the EM docs I have talked to here have all said the same thing (besides the young ones).

I crunched the numbers. That is about 15% of the class. Within normal limits for a reputable, maybe slightly EM oriented match list I think.

But I have interest in EM- so if big raw numbers (but normal proportions) scare you away, you have my love and support.

Had the exact opposite experiences. Worked in the ER for 3 years and all the docs I ever spoke to and scribed for (except 1) were constantly trying to sell me on EM and how much they love what they do. Mix of young and old docs.

Nah. Still a massive shortage in rural areas. I worked in a rural ER as a scribe for a year and they had to recruit FM and IM docs to work as ER docs bc they couldn’t get many bird certified ER docs to come out. Apparently this is common in rural areas. On doc I scribed for was board cert FM but had been an ER doc for 20 years.

I am with you. EM has to be one of the busiest units around. I thoroughly enjoy my time there when I have been, but I don't know if I could do it all the time. Plus you never know what will come thru that door. That has to get old, and I imagine it does based on how I just don't see ER attendings older than their 50's.

On the other hand tho, if you want to work in the city, a high turnover specialty will always make that easier. The only issue is that specialties with high turnover are usually that way for a reason. This is also the reason I wouldn't be worried about ER docs 'over-saturating.' I see plenty of guys doing FM into their 60's and 70's, you just don't see guys in the ER that old.

The fortunes of medical specialties will rise and fall, but in the kingdom of neurology we will endure.
