2019-2020 Pain Fellowship Interview Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
i got an email from Penn that my file was incomplete because of no ITE scores. But, I am fully board certified for many years and don't have any record of my ITE scores from residency. my program shut down and all i have of my residency is just my old PD who now works somewhere else. I emailed this to them. You think this will be sufficient??

For PM&R, SAE (PM&R version of ITE) is administered by AAPM&R (one of main PM&R association). If it is similar for anesthesiology, then you should contact them and get records. If it has to go through residency, get a letter from your old PD stating what you said. Email the document to programs asking for ITEs, not explanations from you.

Anyone know what the word is on Cedars Sinai? The program doesnt show up in ERAS. I emailed the contact person and no reply. Any idea if they are accepting applications this cycle?

Does ucla interview only anesthesia?

This is on their webpage:

"Prior to appointment in the program, all fellows must have successfully completed an ACGME-accredited residency in anesthesiology and must possess a valid California medical license".

When I read that statement, I decided upon not applying (PMR applicant)

UCLA only accepts anesthesia and they are one of the few programs outside the match, so they have an incentive to interview earlier than others. If they interview you and offer a position you'd have to drop out of the match to accept it.

What are folks doing about ITE scores (since we can't send them via ERAS)? Are people sending them in proactively to programs whose website says they want them? Waiting for programs to ask for them? Something else?

My ITE scores are nothing special and I don't want to seem like a nuisance to programs by sending them in if they don't want them.

I'm doing exactly that. Sending them to programs that request them.

Have programs been actively emailing people about ITE scores? I have not received any such emails yet. US Citizen anesthesia resident here with what I thought was a decent application with research and presentations. I applied back in early Jan and have 3 letters in too.

I have emailed a few programs where the information w/ regards to ITE scores was ambiguous. Some of these programs have responded that they are not necessary and that I shouldn't send them, a small number have responded that ITE scores are not necessary but that I can send them if I want to, a small number have requested them as required material, and a small number have emailed me first requesting them.

I know it's not extremely late in the game but it's certainly not early anymore. If I have everything else in my application complete does it make no difference if all of my LOR's aren't in? I'm gonna hound my writers a little more over the next week or so but wondering if I should submit now or wait till they're all in. Part of it is my fault but just starting to freak out a bit.

What I would do would be to email a few of the coordinators from programs to get a sense of what they think. If you are worried that it will make you look bad, then send those emails to programs that you are not interested in. That way you can get a sense for what programs are looking for. For all you know, programs will be willing to look over your application even without all the letters...

I don't want to be a downer, but I would expect programs to not consider an applicant until their file is technically complete.

I've had a few programs ask for them. I have 0 interviews FWIW. It's still early.

I sent ITE scores proactively to every program, a couple emailed back in response, the majority said nothing.

If you ask me, nobody knows exactly how programs use SAE/ITE scores. Likely program dependent, but it sure isn't 'essential' as only handful 'required' it per se (I think it was 2-3 for me <5% I applied actually needed it for my application to be 'completed'). Do what suit you best, but please don't lose your sleep over it. Plenty of roller-coaster riding left, actually it hasn't even started yet.

To those of you freaking out. It wasn’t until this time last year that I decided to apply to pain. I had nothing, no LORs, no application, no transcripts etc.... I had many quality interviews Stanford, Penn, NYU etc... and matched at my top choice so take a chill pill and enjoy the ride. Stressing out isn’t going to make the interviews come any faster.

Are you saying that 8 months of stress and anxiety is not sustainable? I thought that was part of the fun of applying to pain medicine.

My first interview offer was late January. Then I got 6 in february, 6 in march, 5 in april.
The thick of interview offers is around March. Bulk of actual interview days are May-Aug.
Good luck everyone!

Med Students have been using spreadsheets for the past couple years to track applicant data and interview offers.

I took a couple of their ideas and put them into a google doc. Feel free to add your data! It will help us keep track of what types of applicants are in the field and how many interviews they get etc. Planning to keep it anonymous, so just make up a name.

Here is the link: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1t_x8DS_AmEpePCffArjAXtFUwrHuxd97DheKH3bMgu4/edit?usp=sharing

Just copy into your browser

Anyone who has the link can add their info to the table. There are a couple sheets created. You don't have to sign in to google to edit. Please don't edit other people's data. if you want tdo protect your field, I think you can sign in after accessing the link.

I've always wondered what counts as a publication? Actual published articles in a journal? Only things done during residency? Do poster presentations count?

All publications. Posters only if you had to stand in misery for hours.

So how does this work? For example if you didn't get an invite on 2/15 from Univ of New Mexico is it safe to say they do not want you or do they send out invites on other dates as well?

For the pain attendings/fellows out there. When you went on interviews, what is your best estimate on the % of programs that have fellow dinners the night before? I'm just trying to see if I need to request another day off to attend these.

Edit - got the answer; most don't have pre-dinners

Anyone know of a way to send LORs from ERAS to a program that is not on ERAS? Just realized that I did not apply to one of my top programs because it wasn't on ERAS. If not, does this mean for the non-ERAS programs, your LOR writers will have to re-send them?

I applied last year. Out of ~30 or so invites I got, I think there was one 'optional' fellows dinner thing. I did not attend it 1) optional 2) not my top choices. Unless you can attend unlimited amount of interviews (I doubt you will), I would go to 1 more interviews than taking extra days for 1 interview.

I did not apply outside of ERAS because of this very reason. I assume it is MD Anderson? I am 99% sure your attendings have to re-send recommendations to program's own application system. If they don't have their own system, then they need to email directly to coordinators.
