I'm not sure I follow your interpretation. Based on the stats you quoted, the step 1 score for matched vs. unmatched was only 9 points which is less than a 10% difference. Remarkably the # of research experiences was 25% of a difference. The biggest different was AOA membership. That being said, I dont know how many AOAs are truly going into pain fellowship. The most important graph I think is the # of programs ranked vs. likelihood of match. That being said I know people who had 6 interviews and didn't match and those with 3 interviews who did. Go figure

I don't think you can say that there was <10% difference in step 1 score. Eliminating outliers most people fell into 200-250. I would say 9 point difference is pretty big difference.

In my opinion, # of research experience or publication matter but it depends on the quality of project, pain-related, who your PI is, and etc. I had few pubs from college/med school years that I listed to show my track record of research experience. I went to >15 interviews last year. Not a single person mentioned anything about them, but at least 2-3 interviewers at every single program asked me about my pain-related research projects. So, I don't think you can say research is not important by just comparing # of research/pubs this way. Just my 2 cents.

I didnt say research is not important. What I said was the number of research publications was not strongly associated with match status. People with no research or only a single paper seem to have matched just as well as those with 10+.

I would encourage y'all to consider interviews as a number of positions issue rather than a number of institutes. You need a single position.

If you can only interview at one institute on a specific date, pick the one with more positions.
If you're only applying to 2 - 3 fellow programs, you will want more interviews.
If you know that the institute has 5 internal applicants and 2 positions, don't bother interviewing there, and hopefully they won't bother interviewing people for it!

Dude relax. Been on the other side already, I can tell you. Most programs like good letters of recommendation from people they already know, that os key. Good interview skills are very important for most programs if you are not from there or recommended by one of their friends. Steps and ITEs are just to select who comes for interview. Research is a plus for high academic programs, otherwise who cares.

I think the above goes to show:

1) USMLE scores do matter, but wont necessarily make you or break you.
2) USMLE scores matter even more for IMG's than US grads.
3) Of the step scores, Step 3 matters least (as would be expected).
4) US Grads: Need 6 interviews/ranks for a ~85% chance of matching, and 12 interviews/ranks for a ~95% chance of matching.
5) IMG's: Need 6 interviews/ranks for a ~60% chance of matching, and 12 interviews/ranks for a ~80% chance of matching.
6) The higher your scores deviate from the average, the less ranks you'll need for a successful match.
7) The amount of research you have is not strongly associated with a successful match.
8) AOA status matters not.

Good luck everyone!

Hey Tesla, thanks for posting the stats. I just wanted to point out a small detail that you may have missed, so applicants don't get freaked out.

Based on the data you posted, if you look at the breakdown bar graph of interviews/ranks, you'll see that US grads with 12 or more interviews/ranks had a 100% match rate. Those with 8 or more interviewed had a 96.4% match rate. Those with 6 or more interviews had a 90.2% chance of matching.

I think what you're looking at may be the line graph, but this graph is just a plotted graph with estimations, which is different that what the real data shows.

Hi all..
Has anyone been able to get in touch with/contact the MGH/BIDMC/BWC programs? Unsure if they are in the match this year/their administration has not been replying since december
Also curious about UCSF - have had no luck with their pain program since december - are they recruiting this year?
Thanks!

They're on ERAS this year and in the match. They may be bombarded with emails, so you may not get a reply or a slower than normal reply.

Hey guys, I created a new sheet in the spreadsheet so we could try to switch interview dates if needed. Check it out, hope it's helpful. I need someone to switch with for MCW. I have 5/13 and want 5/31 (or another date).

Hey guys - if interviews are released on the above list and we have not heard from programs does that mean we have likely not received an interview offer?

Thats what Im assuming... but I have heard of a second round of interviews or a select few being added later from a few programs.

What I have heard is that as the season goes on, interviews are dropped and spots open up. Also, some programs will have multiple rounds of invites.

Hey everyone this is a long shot but figured I would try. I have an interview on June 20th for UCSD and was wondering if anyone was willing to switch their June 1st or June 7th interview with me. I’ll update the spreadsheet but you can also let me know on this thread. Thanks!

And for MCW are you saying medical college of Wisconsin? Didn’t know they sent interviews out yet, at least it isn’t listed above.

For those who are planning to go to UC Davis, be prepare for the stupidest interview of your life.

Basically they elaborate an interview process in which they test different aspects/skills of the applicants (interpersonal, spatial-orientation, economy, culture etc) . eg spatial orientation: in which you will need to instruct one of the interviewers on how to build a pre existing LEGO configuration while he is giving you his back with a bunch of lego pieces spread apart. Another station will be like an ethical issue and how would you resolve it. Another was an economic problem with two providers and how you resolve the math of the problem. That is all I remember, but there is more.

Hey guys I have an interview scheduled for 5/30 for UT San Antonio, but can't make this date. Does anyone have 5/23 and would be willing to switch? This is really important for me - will provide monetary compensation and/or I’ll buy your flight. Please let me know. Thanks!!!

I'm debating if I should send my ite scores to programs that haven't asked for them to get more interviews. Last year my percentile was 79% this year it's 69% so not horrible but still a drop. Anyone have any recommendations regarding this?
Thanks

Programs clearly don’t care at all about ITE. They use STEP scores it’s the only test we ever all took seriously. Some people don’t open a book for ITE and others have all day to study. If your STEP scores are good they will work for you.

I mean some programs don’t care about the ITE but others obviously do or they wouldn’t ask for the score. My guess is that if you do really well it’s a positive for you or if you do really poorly it’s a negative. But in the middle it probably doesn’t really matter.

I mean, the way I see it, as competitive as it is some programs seem to use it to help hone in on who they’ll invite. I had about 5 programs ask me for ITE scores so far...

Maybe 3-4 programs have asked out of all the programs. The top tier use step scores and the rest of the app. I can tell you multiple people have 12+ interviews and nobody has there ITE scores besides the 3-4 that asked. That tells you it really does not matter. Take it as you may.

I have a good number of interviews and none of those programs have my, albeit terrible, ITE scores

I sent out my score to maybe 30 programs. After that I just got tired cause composing those emails was a lot of work even with copying and pasting. I’m sitting on 4 interviews, not counting my home program. Of those 4 two were programs I sent my score to. But I have no idea how much of a role it played as those two programs are also in neighboring states and I’d say that was probably a bigger factor.

Programs are "discouraged" from asking for ITE or SAE scores by the ABA and the ABPMR. As such many stopped asking for them. It doesn't mean they won't consider them if you did well, especially if you didn't do well on USMLEs. Some will ignore the scores and some will consider them in deciding whether to offer an interview.

Hey guys I have an interview scheduled for 5/30 for UT San Antonio, but can't make this date. Does anyone have 5/23 and would be willing to switch? This is really important for me - will provide monetary compensation and/or I’ll buy your flight. Please let me know. Thanks!!!

Sorry to quote my own reply - I'm getting desperate. If you have the 5/23 date for UT San Antonio, I will offer $500 or I will buy your flight (whichever one is more expensive) to switch with me (I have the 5/30 date) for your inconvenience. I may be able to do 5/28 as well. Please PM me!

Any insiders have news on any of the Harvard programs, i.e. roughly when they will send invites this year?

Just an FYI, the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences has just opened an ACGME accredited pain fellowship and will be in the match this year for start date August 1st, 2020. You can find application instructions at anesthesiology.uams.edu. Full disclosure, I’m a resident at this program and love the pain clinic and faculty.

They have 3 fellowship trained pain attendings (UAB, Northwestern, and Emory). They do a wide variety of procedures and have a special interest in neuromodulation. They are very active in research. Furthermore, they are all young and extremely nice. One thing that is unique about the program is that there’s a rotation with one of UAMS neurosurgeons who is a renown specialist in neuromodulation

Goodluck to all applicants.

Its an annoying process but so worth it.
I did not get a spot through the match even with a solid application (chief resident, publications, interview well, etc) but i did get a spot anyway when someone else dropped out that same application cycle.

Its a slight disadvantage not having an in house fall back program for those that hustled hard for 3-4 years of residency at your respective programs but for most of you, you will be just fine.

Lots of applicants not a lot of spots.

Lots of politics involved in decision making as you already know.

Have fun - you will meet a lot of awesome people and colleagues that you will see at neuromodulation courses as fellows that become lifelong friends.

I got a response from Penn after sending in my score back in January. But since I sent in my CA-2 year score last week, no response thus far

According to previous threads, Stanford has had 4 interview dates for the past 2 years. Does anyone know why there is only one date this year? Maybe this is an early invite?
