2020 Cycle Waitlist Support Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
idk what pisses me off more: the fact that the PTE/CTE guidelines are totally useless if they're not enforced, or the fact that the 2019-2020 cycle has been open for over a year now, and people with multiple acceptances are acting like they need more than 365 days to make a decision, whereas many of us are unnecessarily desperate for just one

(i say unnecessary because we've all put in a ton of hard work/money/hope/determination/patience, enough to be considered for an interview and WL position, but are stuck on hold in this ridiculous process)

edit: i told myself to stay off sdn today and here i am ranting lol sorry
It’s ridiculous.

So infuriating!!! Honestly this entire application system and how everything is run is super inconsiderate to the applicants. Like this is our entire futures we are talking about. There is zero reason that after over a YEAR this should still be going, while hindering the next app cycle and making things more complicated in terms of finances, jobs, future plans etc.

What gets me is the irony of this process. The admissions want empathetic and other oriented people to apply and ultimately admit. But then we get put on the waitlist, treated like a number, and are left in the dark about what our chances are for this future we’ve worked so hard to make a reality. I don’t really get that. But, you gotta see it for what it is, and not let the process take away from who you are and who you want to become!!

100% agree with you

i know acceptances can go out after business hours... But does anyone else sort of look forward to 5pm each day because it means you can chill out and not check your phone every 5 mins lol
While theoretically I should be looking forward to that time to disconnect and take a breath, I feel like I'm now wired to check my email and SDN like my life depends on it. It's become addictive. Additionally, yesterday, multiple schools gave out acceptance calls and emails well into the evening. So there is no rest for us on the waitlist.

Lol, Rush right? Yeah when I heard there were some students holding onto multiple acceptances still, that one hurt.
ridiculous huh? and idk why she didn't want to disclose that number of people who didn't follow the PTE deadline or the size of the waitlist despite some people kept asking.

Loolll , if this is not me , I don’t know what is . What calms me down is knowing that I don’t need to be near my phone post 5 pm for a phone call because they probably won’t call post-5.. unless we get an email that was delayed .

Acceptance calls post 5 pm ? What schools did that ?

I got a spam call from the EXACT area as my school and I was never more heartbroken in my life hahahaha. i was so happy when I saw the city name listed on my phone before I picked up
Heart been broke so many times, I don't know what to believe~

But seriously, I feel your pain. The American Red Cross for my state shares the same area code as one of the schools I'm waitlisted at and the adrenaline rush I get every time they call is gonna give me hypertension.

Dear Admissions Committee,

Late night, like Left Eye, I'm creeping.
Assuming the worst cause I haven't heard from you all weekend. Your silence is driving me up the wall, up the wall. I cannot tell if you're ducking calls, or missing calls.

Sincerely,

ovo

Every time ya'll think of looking at that SDN waitlist thread, just do this dance twice to calm yourself down:

It go, right foot up, left foot slide
Left foot up, right foot slide
Basically, I'm saying either way, we 'bout to slide, ayy
Can't let this one slide, ayy (who's bad?)

Then go ahead and still check because we're all neurotic as heck!

Hi is this thread also for people on a waitlist who botched a simple copy and paste job and provided a broken doi link to a publication in an update to my single WL? I know there’s a lot of desperation in here but is there room for self loathing too 😢 :bang:

It's ok. The fact that your manuscript was accepted/published is what they would care about. Everything on all our applications is technically self-reported and not really verified so I'm sure they'll take your word for it.

Congrats on the pub!

i saw people browse my researchgate account from the schools I applied for

anyone else planning to retake the mcat if they need to reapply? ugh

Yupp, stressing about what time they’ll change it to tomorrow though. I’m not a morning person and it’s going to hurt if I get a 6:30am slot. Also currently only studying my favorite subjects lol.

Edit: lol just got the email that it’s been scheduled to 6:30am . At least rescheduling fees are now waved.

ugh yeah. thinking i should start opening my books now... but the little hope i have is making me lazy.

so those that are planning on it, are you guys going to be applying this cycle or next? i dont want to have to wait 2 more years but it's going to take me months to study and my odds will be lower if i submit my mcat when half the cycle is over

How many months do you plan on studying for? Medical schools are expecting late mcat scores due to covid19, so you might make it just fine.

You guys waiting to schedule your next MCAT till a little later Incase you get in off the waitlist?
No, planning to register tomorrow because I'm worried about not finding test dates this year. Just being safe

yeahh that's fair. i was thinking like 4 months? honestly a little rusty so might need more, not sure. i took it 2 years ago and have been in my gap year so havent studied in a minute

I’m also worried about retaking. Had a lower score and haven’t took any of the core classes for over a year. Wondering how I’ll be able to study for the MCAT in 3 months haha

Alright, do you guys think this is frowned upon. I have a CTE deadline on mid-June for one school, but I am still waiting for WL movement at my top school. I was thinking of emailing adcoms maybe at the start of June telling them I have a relatively early CTE, so if they were to accept me they would know to do it prior to the CTE deadline. On one side I'm thinking why not? there's nothing to lose. But on the other side, as an adcom member, I would hate to receive hundreds of emails like this from all my WL applicants.

I don't think it would hurt, especially since you have an acceptance to leverage and you make it clear that you would most definitely go to your top choice. But my only expertise is from SDN so...

Yep, already signed up.
Any idea if we decide to reschedule, does that automatically "give up" our current exam time (mine was rescheduled to 6:30am). Not sure if that makes sense, but if we want to change it, and we click reschedule, does that automatically give up our time in that slot, or not until after we have actually rescheduled?

I seem to recall going back and trying to reschedule to an earlier date but still keeping my current one. It's been a while, but I am pretty certain your spot is held until you reschedule a new date. The only time it is not is if you cancel your MCAT with the intention of then rescheduling some other day.

Saw two people do this at my top choice last year (on SDN) and they were the only two people to get off the waitlist, that posted at least. I’d say go for it. Unless this is a Harvard level school, they probably don’t get too many people sending this. Schools like to know they are “the one”.

I too will b re-taking the mcat as it was the weakest link on my app for sure. I know it’s a time crunch, but I’m gonna aim for July 23 test date b/c I uh am getting completely cut off by my parents in august for not getting in LOL. (Cries)

Anyone else starting to re-study on Monday? Cheers to another year of emotional torture and hell we loveeee to see it

When are you planning to retake?

WL at Wake Forest - my top choice - anyone know how good their movement is considering it's already the first week of may. I know their CTE deadline is much earlier than most schools as well.

Is waitlist movement delayed due to the virus? My top choice has barely pulled from their WL what I gathered on the SDN forum. The response they gave was very vague when asked what’s going on.

Ive read that a few adcom members mentioned that the virus is slowing things down. Also seems that less people are following the traffic rules (April 30th) due to the uncertainty Of these times

its 2:20 am. currently drafting an update/LOI out of desperation. anyone ever feel like every word of this thing will be ruthlessly dissected and scrutinized just to find something to interpret as immediately rejectable? even tho it's probably gonna get tossed aside and never read...?

You aren't alone. I spent all of yesterday drafting an update but never finished. Stuck between thinking that it won't have a difference and that it may just annoying to adcoms. Just keep it short and easy to read. Imo even if it's not read maybe the mere fact that you sent something may help

Same here... where do you guys send LOIs? To the admission office?

Just had a good friend of mine go through a nightmare--a few weeks ago he was sitting on several Acceptances from T10 schools -- BioE, 520+, GPA showed upward trend, couple pubs. He even has some new side hustle with his secondary application photo in the biography page. After April 30th, he changed that bio to say he was an incoming student at a T5 school.

Fast forward to May the Fourth Be with you (May 4th), HE GETS HIS OFFER RESCINDED! No explanation. Just like that it vaporized. I am not sure if there was an inconsistency found in his application or maybe they discovered a typo or his activities references didn't check out whatever I don't know the point is I knew it was for real (the red hot angry tears are something you can definitely pick up on Facetime) was because that same school that rescinded had WL movement the very next day. Now I don't know about you, but isn't one of Hill's criteria for causality temporality?

Let's stay strong, everybody. For every horror story like mine, we have countless success stories just above me. Thank you everyone
