2022-2023 APPIC Internship Interview Invitation Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Has anyone heard from the Bronx VA or Harvard Medical School / Massachusetts Mental Health Center at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center? They were supposed to send out notifications by today. 😕
I received an interview invite from Harvard Medical School/MMHC a week or two ago - I'm sorry to bring not so good news 🙁

Anyone hearing from sites that their LOR are not viewable? I just heard from one that they can't see mine even though they're showing as completed on my end. Currently on hold with AAPI and on hold for chat because this is NOT GOOD 🙃
I had the same issue as did other applicants. A mass email was sent out so training directors should be aware and you shouldn't be penalized. In my case, my DCT was able to access a PDF of my complete application and with the site's permission, sent the application to the contact at the site.

Official Site Name: VA Northern CA - East Bay

Anyone hear from Northwestern Feinberg? They listed 12/1 as date of notification in APPIC Directory but I haven’t heard anything either way or seen any updates on spreadsheet. 😬😬😬

I also dont want to be the messenger of bad news but Bronx VA also sent out invites. Not everyone posts their invitations as comments in this thread, so when in doubt check the spreadsheet. It tends to be more accurate

Can someone confirm whether Jacobi has actually sent out invites? I'm finding the spreadsheet confusing (it looks like the interview offer may have been in the wrong spot because it's a few columns over)

Thanks for letting me know... Congrats on your invite!

Did anyone hear from the Bedford VA yesterday? The Appic directory lists their notification day as 12/1 but I didn’t see anyone post about it.
Nope. FWIW, I think last year from what I saw they contacted people on 12/7

Nope, also waiting to hear from them. Nothing is on the spreadsheet either so I'm still hopeful! (but it is still early haha)

Howdy friends. What is the best move after an interview with respect to a thank you note? Should I send nothing? A group email? Individualized emails to the people I met with? Handwritten notes? A fruit basket? My amputated foot? Please advise.

Lol the latter ones made me laugh out loud

I've heard that a nice note to the director is fine, but really not necessary. The advice I have received is do it if you want, but it doesn't drive decision making at all... also, definitely don't violate APPIC rules by divulging your rankings.

I mostly sent thank you notes to the training director. There were a few times I sent thank you notes to people I interviewed with who were especially kind or helpful. And some sites stated not to send a thank you note at all. Listen to them when they say that. It’s not a trick…lol. Some don’t like the pressure of having to respond (or not) to 50-70 emails.

At the end of the day, I truly don’t think it makes a difference. Whether you send a thank you note or not is not going to impact your ranking (unlike it would with a regular job interview).

Haha! I've been advices to write email thank you notes to everyone who interviewed you (I think group or separate is fine-- I'd do separate if you had a really unique conversation with one person you'd like to reference). I think doing nothing is a mistake, and a handwritten note is too much/ unnecessary

Thank you notes are a nice gesture but the consensus I’ve seen is that they are neither good nor bad and don’t move the needle at all. Definitely no limbs, that might effect some things though. Keep those Dexter urges until after you get an offer.

Thank you emails definitely not necessary. If anything, it's more of a hassle than anything as it's another few dozen emails when most of us are already getting several dozen work related emails a day.

This is a hot take I haven’t heard from DCTs but makes sense! I was told they’re a nice formality but not a make it or break it

A couple of the past sites where I had been faculty, VAs, explicitly asked applicants not to. I know of at least several others with the same policy.

I have heard from previous students send thank you cards with a Happy Holidays note. Is it too much too?

Sometimes it's personal preference. First and foremost, if a site requests that you do not send thank yous, abide by that request. If you want to, I'd just keep it simple. But, as almost everybody here who reviews apps can attest, I have never had whether or not someone sent a thank you come up in ranking meetings. Usually we send back a canned response and delete the email in the mad dash to respond to the other 20-something work-related emails and such that we are dealing with. As a frame of reference, most people do not get time offsets to do internship application stuff. So, most of these people are still working their full clinical load, and everything here is extra, uncompensated work.

Thank you for facilitating this! It is so helpful.

I was wondering about the National Psychology Training Consortium-Central Region... it is not currently on the list.

To add on, as an applicant, this is the major thing that is consuming life right now and there's a lot riding on the process.

But for staff, this is a just another task to approach professionally and then wrap up ASAP (e.g., fill out rating forms, potentially attend a future ranking meeting) and most likely not think about again until the next batch of interns arrive (or ever lol) so nothing else should be expected.

Represent yourself to the best of your abilities during the interview day and save your energy. Good luck everybody!

Hi there! I noticed that too and was confused. Which track(s) did you apply to?

Is anyone else waiting to here from the neuro tracks at Geisinger and Capt. James A. Lovell FHC?

I saw that both have sent out interviews but I’m not sure if I should assume that I will not be receiving one.

I am waiting on Geisinger, but am not hopeful as they have already sent out notifications for interviews and I can't see anything on their site explicitly stating we would hear either way.

Any news from the DC VA today, positive or negative? I saw that someone posted they got a rejection yesterday. I am still in limbo.

I applied to them last year too—just searched my emails to see when I had heard from them last year. They sent a rejection letter on 12/15/2020. So maybe (hopefully) not all hope is lost!

Still in limbo too on my end. My theory is they are making calls after work hours seeing the times people got calls/emails yesterday. It does not seem to be as straight forward of a process as it is at some other sites.

Also, has anyone heard from Louis Stokes? Their notification date was supposed to be 11/25 but I’m not sure if that was updated from last year.
I also applied there and have not heard from them. I don’t think we can base it off of that 11/25 though as it probably doesn’t reflect the current interview cycle. I’m holding out hope for both of us 🙂

Fingers crossed for us both 🤞 I didn’t see them on excel/google sheet so maybe they haven’t reached out to anyone yet

BRB going to go make a tear sandwich. Congrats!!!!!

For those who applied to CO-PIC, which site(s) have sent out interviews/rejections?

I scheduled my interview for Geisinger, but they requested in the email for those who can’t make the dates to cancel so another applicant can fill their spot, so i wouldn’t give up hope just yet 😊

I applied to several... Truman, Burrell, and Royal Oaks. Did you apply to NPTC Central also?
Hi! Yeah I applied to a couple IHC-HRSA tracks through Central. They have different names but I believe they are through Burrell. Heard anything yet?

If a site hosts a virtual social to meet the interns the evening before interview day, do you think it looks bad if you're unable to attend?

This sounds optional and if so, probably purely for your benefit and it’s also possible there may not be time during the interview day to interact with interns so you might miss out on valuable info (which I found super beneficial and helped me to clarify my rankings).

I think it would be uncommon for current interns to be asked for evaluative feedback following a Q&A or social type event or have it be held against you for not being able to attend.

From what I’ve heard, these types of events are “optional.” Personally, I’d probably try to attend.

Has anyone heard from DSH Metropolitan? Their invites were supposed to go out 11/30
