2023-2024 Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences (Kansas City) KCU-COM

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
can any third or fourth years share their experiences with rotation sites? is everyone able to stay in kc if they desire?
You can request a specific rotation site if you have a reason or need. Otherwise you enter the lottery and are placed based on your rankings. There are a lot of spots in KC so if that's where you want to be, I wouldn't worry about it.

Application in the portal still says I need to complete my interview even though I completed this a couple weeks ago. Should I reach out or is it common for it to not be updated?

Would any current students share how long OMM lab is each week? Also, is the curriculum small group learning or traditional lectures?

OMM labs are variable depending on the rest of your non-OMM schedule, but you can expect to be there at least twice a week for 2-4 hours.

It’s been all traditional lectures thus far for M1 and I believe that’s the majority.

OMM/clinical skills labs are a max of 2hrs. First year you will have 2hr labs 2x a week. Second year it varies and there are a lot more 1hr labs.

Hey got an email from KCUCOM saying, “The first review of your application did not result in an interview invitation. The application cycle continues throughout the year, so your application will be reviewed periodically.”

cGPA is a 3.86, sGPA is a 3.82, 506 MCAT

I have close to 2500-2600 hundred hours of patient care (working as a PCT and volunteering experiences) and 38 hours shadowing IM, and 14 hours with anesthesia. Also have 200 hours of research from undergrad (Covid had cut my other opportunities short).

Got strong LOR’s from my professors , nurse manager for my floor, my boss from when I was a student athlete tutor and a strong DO letter as well. I was also an economics major in college , not sure if that’s relevant.

KCUCOM is definitely one of my top choices and the email left me feeling bummed out. Would appreciate any insight to what their email meant and what I should be expecting moving forward!

Any current or previous students that can speak to how KCU approaches OMM? I hear it is lighter than other DO schools. Is it more research presented or do you need to drink some cool-aid and be open to voodoo to have a good experience with it? Speaking of cranial, etc.

I think it means they did a review of your app but were not ready to give you an interview right now. It is not a rejection so don't lose hope! It seems like they are going to review it again throughout the cycle but maybe send a letter of continued interest if you really like the school

There's not much "cool-aid" passed around at KCU. You get out of it what you put in. The OMM instructors are amazing and understand that not everybody is going to fall in love with OMM, they teach what you need to be successful on boards, but they are willing to dive deeper with you if you want to.

I also got this email a few months ago but received an interview invite a few weeks later! I wouldn't be too discouraged yet

Hi everyone. Is there just one 20 mins one-on-one interview right? then the group acitivity?

Has anybody received a response from the 10/26 interviews yet? I’m getting a little antsy.

I think the quote was “if it gets to more than three weeks something has gone wrong” so I think we were all hoping for a quicker response!
Did they say this in person or in the virtual interview? At mine they said it could be up to 6 weeks

I got an II september 1st, but the only date I saw as the earliest was december 12th, how are people getting dates earlier than that while being offered II after me? are dates opening up? could i change to an earlier dates? also, if i have an II in december am I interviewing for WL?

in person.
At my in-person interview, they said they were shooting for 2 weeks, but many people had gotten sick, so three weeks would likely be more accurate. They said that after 6 weeks, we should check back in because an error might have occurred (but not to reach out before then).

My hypothesis is that the bulk of responses will begin this Thursday, but it’s driving me nuts

the admissions director specifically told our group to email after 3 weeks

I'm still waiting for a response since 10/17. My group was told that decisions could take up to six weeks so I'm waiting until then to contact them. Definitely been nerve-wracking but am glad work is keeping me preoccupied xD

How often does KCU send out acceptances under a week or at a week after the interview?

how could they start having waitlist movement this early? there are so many people still waiting to hear back about october interview dates
At the 10/26 in person interview it was explained to us that if/when someone who has received an A turns down the offer they then go to the waitlist and pick a person that is similar to the one who just pulled out (I would assume this means similar attributes, strengths, experiences, etc). So that doesn’t mean that they are done interviewing and extending As by any means

For context, I was first waitlisted and accepted within days of my initial waitlist last month! They are a large class, so I'm sure they have tons of spots left. Hope this helps

I received an interview invite today for KCU. Anyone else interviewing on the 30th of this month? The Kansas City campus location was the only option available to select for interview, but I have a strong preference for Joplin. Didn't know if the interview location matters and would love to hear if anyone knows if the interview location dictates where I would get placed, should I receive an acceptance.
