We signed an NDA and cant say much about the interview. However, Dr. Ryan Gray has a good book about how to prep for all medical school interviews called the premed playbook to medical school interviews. Definitely a must read for anyone preparing for any interview.

I got a secondary. However, it being November first, is it too late to submit my secondary?

It looks like from online the hard deadline for all secondary submissions is March 1. I would still submit as long as the 21-day deadline from when you first got the secondary invitation to apply.

Does anyone know why KCU’s complex 1 pass rate dropped to 89% for 2023?

No idea, but if I had to guess it’s probably from a focus on USMLE to match students competitively. I wonder if residencies care about failing comlex as long as Step is passed?

I think it’s actually something DO students are obligated to report where as failing step is not needed to report on your residency apps.

Please correct me if I’m wrong!

I think it's an individual issue. Overall I think the school does a decent job at preparing you material wise, but it's up to the student to do their due diligence and do practice questions. I'm a current OMS-III at KCU so you're talking about my year. I've passed STEP 1 and COMLEX 1 on my first try and from what I've been hearing it's just how the student prepares.

But why did so many more individuals study worse?

can any third or fourth years share their experiences with rotation sites? is everyone able to stay in kc if they desire?

This is interesting. If step is not required to report if you fail, why would every DO student not take Step 1 at least?

that's something I don't have a concrete answer to,. But yet again my speculation is merely through word of mouth so it doesn't hold much weight in terms of explanation for our class' success rate. So really, your guess is as good as mine at this point.

I'm a current 4th year. So technically you are right that there is no rule that you have to report Step. Some people try to argue ethics saying that you should be upfront, but most people I know who failed just left it out of the app.

I think the movement of Step/Comlex1 pass/fail made less people motivated to prepare early and harder compared to when it was scored. If you look at national pass rates in the different years, you can see how the pass rates dropped among both MD and DO by a lot after the switch to pass/fail as well.

I did a site out of KC bc i was tired of KC but yes, most ppl who wanted to stay there got to stay there. it usually varies from year to year. for example, my year CO was a popular site but those in their third year clerkships, CO wasn't as popular. it varies from year to year but most popular seems to be KC, CO, MI, FL, and CA sites.

They give you the option to write two types of letters, one which is a hardship and the other is a letter to the dean of the core site basically stating your connections and why you want to stay there. A lof of people took that for granted and assumed they would end up in their top ranked choice and they placed in one of the lower ranked areas. So yes students can stay in KC but you have to be smart about using those two letters to make your case.

I know there's probably no way for this to happen but: Is there a way to request consideration for the other campus (i.e. KC instead of Joplin). Tldr: I applied to both but then further research, and information I gained at the interview, made me strongly prefer the KC campus, which I did express to my interviewers. I was lucky enough to get accepted to KCU-Joplin which I am very grateful for but believe I would be happier at KC in the long run. Is there a way to ask nicely for a swap or is set in stone? Thanks y'all.

I would ask, I don't know that you can switch once an acceptance is given, but can't hurt to ask. Worst they can say is no. Email admissions, they are very responsive to questions.

I think i already asked this but how long did it take for KCU to confirm your letters, transcripts, etc after making your payment and submitting the secondary?

I agree - I read this book before my interviews and I definitely think it helped me get accepted. Especially at KCU.

You have to pass COMLEX in order to graduate with a DO degree
