any secondaries?

Does anyone know the international student acceptance stats at the school? Can't seem to find anything

Anyone got interview request from Mid Western ?

Does anyone know if we need to upload our CV and Personal Statement to the AZCOM/CCOM portal if they were already in our AACOMAS primary app? Or is that just for updated CVs/PSs?

hey i have a 501 mcat, 3.9gpa and a 3.85sgpa, very solid ECs too.
I am wondering if i should apply now or if i should re write the mcat on august 27 (will receive my score on around october 1st).
If i was to re write my mcat i am guessing i will get around a 505

What are your 3rd year rotations like? Do you have to move around quite a bit or do you have a hub you're located at?

Are you planning to rewrite MCAT regardless? If so, there's no need to delay application. Honestly, I know people who have gotten in with lower MCAT and stellar everything else. That being said, the average MCAT is rising each year, so there's no guarantees. But Midwestern is all about holistic review.

If you're not planning to retake regardless, then I would say look hard at what reapplying will mean for you. As a reapplicant, you need there to be a significant difference in your application in order to change your odds. Basically, something to show for the time between apps that made you a better applicant. More classes, different experiences, significantly higher MCAT, etc.

Midwestern breaks their rotations up into Regions. You submit your preferences for Region during winter of first year, similar to the Match process, if your familiar with how that works. Then a few weeks later, you will get assigned to your Region. Most people get assigned to something in their top 3. Rotations then are supposed to be within 60 miles of your location. If they are further, Midwestern is required to provide housing for $150/month (price may increase over the years I'm sure). Personally, most of my rotations have been about 20 minutes from me. That said, I do have a couple of friends who have had 45-60 minute commutes for a rotation here or there. The Regions include: East Phoenix, West Phoenix, Tucson, North LA, South LA, San Diego, Chicago, and Kankakee (IL). I'm not sure, but there might be one new one I'm missing?

Midwestern does not have a home hospital like a lot of medical schools do. Most rotations are going to be somewhere completely new to you, especially outpatient rotations. Personally, I did have 1 IM, Surgery, and a NICU elective all at the same hospital, but that was mostly by chance. You're guaranteed to have at least 2 wards based rotations, 1 of which is 1 of the IM rotations. Personally, I was in an inpatient setting for at least some portion of 7 out of the 11 rotations for 3rd year: IM x2, Surgery, Psych, Pediatrics, NICU, Peds Neuro. That's the high end for inpatient though. Most people have one of their IM rotations outpatient, peds outpatient, psych varies a lot, and electives are obviously dependent on what you choose.

I hope that answers your questions! Let me know if there's anything more you wanted to know.

Yes it does thank you!

How difficult is it to get one of your top choices for those rotations? Are they mostly at teaching hospitals with residencies?

I’m interested mainly in the CA rotations so if you’re at one of those hubs can you speak more about those specifically

For the most part, you don't get a say in where you rotate during 3rd year, outside of putting in a few preferences for consideration. They spin the sites and that's kind of how it goes. You are required to do two wards based rotations, one of which is IM. You get to submit what preferences you have for your second one and that will be taken into consideration, but not guaranteed. Some are more selective than others. For instance, I am doing pediatrics and there are only a handful of rotations available to Midwestern at Phoenix Children's Hospital, which our Vice Chair assigns based on expressed interest, involvement, and grades. But not all specialties are that competitive. Surgery, for instance, tends to have a lot of Wards spots and students without a specific preference often end up on it. So if that's your desire, it's easier to get that assigned.

You also submit a similar preference for your rural rotation, but those are honestly very hit or miss, just because the rural options are very limited.

You do get to make requests for your elective rotations, but that can be hit or miss because it depends on what other rotations you have completed. You have to complete Gen Surg before you can do surgical subspecialty and gen peds before a peds subspecialty, for example. So if your electives are earlier in the year, your choices are more limited.

Beyond this, you are always welcome to talk to your coordinator to request changes if you have a good reason to do so. But a lot of times, the options are pretty limited once everything has been assigned. So the earlier you communicate concerns, the better.

Unfortunately, I'm in West Valley, so I don't know too much about the LA rotations. I do know they are little more complicated because traffic around there makes a short drive into a long one. And there were a few specialties they didn't have in LA, so students had to travel back to AZ for some of them (with the accommodations I mentioned previously). That being said, they're always adding new rotations, so this might not be as big of a deal anymore.

I have only worked with Residents twice (IM and Peds). Most of our rotations are more one-on-one with a preceptor. Which, of course, has it's benefits and drawbacks.

go ahead and apply! I think our avg was around a 504 // 3.55 so you should still be competitive!

It's been a while since I interviewed now. But I don't think it has changed much. They do a single 30 minute interview with two interviewers at once. They only had access to our personal statements and activities, no grades. The questions I got really focused on things in my personal statement and interests. (We actually spent 10 minutes of it discussing DnD.) I know some others got some more generic questions. But really, they're just looking to have a good conversation with you.
