just finished my very first semester in college w/a 3.8 gpa. thats pretty good but what r my chances so far and what type of mcat score will i need if i maintain this number???🙁 😕

yeah, you'll probably get in, if you don't go off the deep end first... But in my experience it's 50/50 GPA/MCAT...unless you go to the south dakota community college and are a kinesiology major.

A little too early to be worried about yout GPA. You had a good semester now try to keep ith that way for 3.5 more years. Then come back and ask.

need to get into a med school? then around a 30 is good enough.
need to get into top schools? then there's no score that will guarantee an acceptance, nevertheless an interview.
Man, I can't believe a college freshmen is stressin himself out about med schools already... 🙄

Your home state or MCAT score, preferably at least 30 for a CA school, plays a much larger role in this game than your GPA. Also good volunteer acitivities will help.
I don't think that it is too early for you to ask though. If I had known these things, I would probably have change my major from this ridiculous premed to something elses such as English, Drama or even Sit-Com if there was one. For me 3.8 GPA probably hurts rather than helps me. Those Adcoms probably thought that I was a fake.
When the time comes, don't be surprised to see a lot of people come out of nowhere to score 30-32 in MCAT!

dont worry so much.
a 3.8 is an excellent gpa but you have to do well on the mcat (JR year most likely...)
i got a 3.4 cumulative gpa and i have been accepted. grades are not the entire picture. just remember this.

what don't even consider med school if you ONLY have a 3.8. An average applicant has a 8.3 GPA, 100 publications in science, and 10 years of volunteer experience in Zakutyfaghiajk, Africa.
Maybe you should start considering med schools in Antarctica instead, the Carribean schools are simply out of reach for you 😀
P.S. 3.8 is really good, celebrate by x'mas binge-eating

To the OP-
From one college freshman to another: congrats on your GPA (I got a 3.8 too ), but relax and enjoy your winter break! We have years before we should be seriously stressed out about what MCAT scores are needed to complement/make up for our GPAs (keep in mine this is only semester 1- we still have ochem to get through 😱 ). Right now we shold just sit back, relax, and absorb valuable information from our SDN superiors 😀
