I applied to 40 schools

Got interviews from 8

Done 2 interviews, 6 more to go.

However, I just got 3 rejections just today... 2 of which were my top choices....

I feel really disappointed right now and i really don't feel like upto prepping for my upcoming interviews..

Being disappointed is quite understandable but you can't let that get in the way of anything else. Who knows? Maybe your real dream school hasn't interviewed you yet. Can't do anything but move forward and knock their socks off!

8 interviews?? As my grandmother would say "You're crying with a loaf of bread under your arm"

Meaning, you've got it good. Even if you go to your last choice school, you're going to be a doctor!

You're not in this just for convenience's sake. There are plenty of people on this forum who will gladly trade places with you.

8 II's is pretty awesome. Your chances of going to medical next year are excellent. I am trying really hard to feel sorry for you here but find it extremely difficult.

But really, stop worrying. You're in great shape with 8 II's. A lot of people have none. Be grateful for what you have so far and keep things in perspective.

You're an a-hole, OP. You have the money for 40 applications and you're sitting on 8 interviews.

40 schools is soooooo much $$$$

Only if you have FAP and can then get every school to waive your secondary fee and thus only have to pay for 26 primary apps could I see it being fiscally possible...but that's still a g...which is a lot in the real world

I applied to 24 and it cost me 3k (had to take out a loan)....40 you must be pushing 5.5k

Best reply ever TriagePreMed, this is my new sig!

But he feels down and now he doesn't want to get ready for his many lesser invites. :''''(

I don't mean that the ones I have are any lesser... It's just a huge disappointment to get 3 rejections on one day thats all 🙁

Except you're not going to get interviews at every place you applied to, and with 40 applications out there you're going to get a lot more rejections than any normal person. There are people who couldn't afford to apply that broadly and might have been better off if they had. Maybe just appreciate the 8 interviews you do have and the fact that you can afford to do something that ridiculous in the first place.

It's okay to feel bad. That they're your top 2 choices seems appropriate if you're testing your application's competitive limits.

It's in poor taste to seek sympathy with 8 II's. This is an example of the annoying immaturity I referenced in the other thread.

i prob have worse stats then you but no ii and no rejections. weird

I think of it like this: most of us non-superstar applicants will be 100K+ in debt very soon in the future... whats another 1K or so spent on applications if it means that you get to max out your chances to get into a school where you will be most happy?

FWIW I added about 8 'hail mary' schools to my app in August (bringing my total schools to 32) after I began passing screens at places like Vandy + UCSF, and I currently have II's at two of those schools. Very happy I bit the bullet and spent that extra $800 or so.

This is my thinking. I applied to 30+ schools and I'm not looking back. Want to judge, that's your call. But I'm not complaining about it either.

Guyyyys rejection sucks even if you've got everything you want in the world. (maybe, especially if you've got everything you want in the world...)

OP- YOU'RE GONNA BE OKAY. Before interviews I had a pretty set idea of which schools were top on my list, and a lot of that totally changed when I actually visited the schools. Do yourself a favor and walk into interview day with an open mind. You've worked hard to get there and deserve to at least give yourself a chance to like the schools you've got a chance at.

+pity+

OP, given the number of places you applied to you will be eventually rejected from probably more than 90% of the schools you applied to. A really easy way to make that 100% is to let your confidence be shattered for the interviews you do have.

At least they're actually telling you, instead of stringing you along, thinking maybe you still have a chance (UA COM, I'm looking in your direction)

Honestly if you're that disappointed I think you should withdraw from your upcoming 6 interviews so people with a better perspective on the application process (and life) can take your spot.

It is always sad to not get you're first choice. Get your crap together, kill it every day, and don't let it happen again.
However, if you're so weak and thin skinned that a couple rejections totally rock your world, medicine ain't for you.

Just a reminder to keep it civil, please. Personal attacks are not allowed on SDN.

Thanks.

👍

OP was just asking an innocent question that was misinterpreted as a humblebrag. Hordes of bloodthirsty premeds pounced on OP for boasting he got 8 II, which isn't the main point. The main point is, OP was upset when his top choice rejected him. That alone requires some sympathy regardless of IIs he had.

OP, out of curiosity, did you strictly apply only to MD, or MD and DO as well?

Even if rejections from top schools sting, you never know what other places you previously hadn't considered will quickly replace them. Rock your interviews and keep an open mind. Happened to me! 🙂

If your dream is to be a physician, then It's about what you do with your options and your education when life doesn't go as you planned, not the fact that you went to some ultra elite prestigious school with arbitrary reviewers who decided if you were "qualified" enough. Prove to them that their decision was wrong. Otherwise you're confirming their doubts and letting them win.

OP, I applied to 30+ schools and I see where you're coming from. I also have 8 interviews and got a rejection and a hold yesterday. I recently interviewed at a school that was one of my top choices and it was a miserable experience. I absolutely did not like it there. This changed my perspective on everything. You can't know anything until you visit the school. If a school rejects you, screw them. They don't deserve you anyway! So go visit the schools that like you, kick ass, and see if you can be happy there! Don't give up on schools you don't feel great about because in the end, you're going to be a doctor and many people would kill to be given that chance.
As far as the finances go, it's everyone's personal decision as to how much money he/she will be spending on apps. It's our own decision to spend a lot of money on the process, so don't listen to the people hating. They don't know your financial background.

lol what'd you expect
40 out of 40?

Harsh much? Lol

 yeah after rereading my post I agree that was too harsh. His title mislead me. I was going to try to cheer someone up who got three rejections in one day. Then I learned that he applied to 40 schools and already has 8 interviews. And personally I don't think you can have a true top choice until you visit a school. Most people's top choices are based on rank/prestige, location, and information gleaned from the school's website. I don't think you really know your top choice until you meet the students and faculty, see the facilities, etc.

I'll revise my statement to the OP. The application process is tough, you're going to have to be more resilient. Don't dwell on the rejections, because I guarantee you'll find a dream school in one of your 8 interview days that you didn't realize was your dream school when you applied.

I too applied to 40+ schools.

0 Interview Invites so far.

6 Rejections, including a top choice.

Please have some perspective - an acceptance to any medical school is the goal here.

You will be just fine.

If you don't mind me asking, what were your stats? GPA and MCAT score?

Just kidding make that 7 rejections.....

Thanks though!

This was what I needed to hear! Got my first rejection today. No interviews yet. My feels hurt.

How are you ses disadvantaged and applying to that many schools?

As I said earlier if you have FAP then you get 14 free primaries...but almost every school will waive your secondary fee, even beyond the 14....so if you apply to 40 schools with FAP you only have to pay for the 26 additional primary apps...which is only about ~$800 (and any schools that won't give you a fee waiver...which are far and few between)

Thanks so much for the encouraging words everyone! After reading through everyone's comments I felt much better and at the same time ashamed of myself for maybe sounding too spoiled or bragging. I wish there's a way I could delete this thread that I started so it'd stop annoynig people...

Anyways, I've been extremely happy with the interviews I have. Like "BundleofHis" said, for the schools I interviewed so far, I was surprised to find myself really liking those schools! thanks for the advice and kind words everyone, and to those who thought I might have been inconsiderate, I also appreciate your thoughts. All of you have made me really think about this again and look on the much brighter side 🙂

Precisely. And that ~$800 was saved up from working.

Sounds like some people just want to go through this thing once. Makes sense to me.

What if you guys end up at a school you are lukewarm/bummed out about?

Who is bat**** crazy enough to write secondary essays for 40 schools? Some of the stuff can be re-used, but the varying word limits still requires more than a copy-paste job.

I started off with the intention of applying to 30+ schools, but my mental sanity and financial constraints forced me to cut it down to 17.

There are plenty of people who apply to 30+ schools. When you aren't sure you're competitive enough, spending that extra cash now on extra applications is a lot better than applying again next year.

I prefer to think of myself as overly ambitious. 🙄

Add in full-time research and volunteering, and yes, 40+ secondaries sounds insane. I tackled it with a lot of preparation and organization starting back in April/May. A lot of the same examples were used, so re-editing took maybe a day per school. Definitely got burnt out at one point, but no regrets!

^This! The steep price tag on applying to that many schools is one thing, but omg 40 secondaries!? Holy crap. Who has the individual manpower to spit out 120+ essays in a matter of a couple weeks!

In my case, every school's questions have been worded just differently enough where I haven't been able to recycle any essays as of yet, and I'm only applying to like 15 schools. The thought of 40 secondaries makes my head spin. I've gotta give OP some credit.

After looking at these posts, applying EDP sounds pretty good. A bit risky though, right?

Yes, quite risky. You have to be pretty certain that you are a rockstar applicant for that school you're applying ED. You can only apply to other schools after Oct 1 if the school doesn't accept you, so you'd be pretty late.

Try paying for it all from working. And all your tuition, living expenses, and everything.

I think I am just bitter but it really rubs me the wrong way when people take advantage of FAP.

It bothers me when people that get to go to school for free and such are the same people that have never worked and after they work to pay for one component of their life, they feel suddenly superior.

FYI...I am not saying this is you at all..just sharing my thoughts.

I am not impressed.
