Out with the old in with the new.
Now that all the fourth years have matched I am putting a shout out to all of the third years to come together in unity and get ready for one of the most stressfull years of our lives. Let us unite for us to all be stronger, we will help each other in times of happiness and sadness, in times of good rotations and bad, in times of high flatus volume and digital impaction, in times of bad interviews and good interviews, in times of lame sdn posts😀 and good sdn posts.

Actually Intern year is far more stressful when taken as a whole. 4th year med school is a piece of cake and should be considered a relative vacation EXCEPT for that 1-2 months of the match period.

Hurray! Let us be friends henceforth. My school is already starting meetings with the dean. Mine is next week. :scared:

General Veers, don't try to discourage us, it is more stressful for many not to know where/if we're going unto the specialty of our choice than it is to work hard as MDs. Remember, we have to do our EM sub-I, away rotations, applications, interviews, and then matching, so the stress is much more than 2 mos. Besides, he/she said "one of".

Do not knock the words of your elders. A third year is completely incapable of assessing what is more stressful. A senior EM resident, much more so.
😀

Match is nerve racking, but not so much stressful. Traveling is tiring, but again, not that stressful.

Internship: STRESSFUL

Fellowship: DOUBLY. 😉

You should definately unite and network. Nothing beats it. As seen here, you never know who you will end up doing residency with or having a job with.

🙂

Scrambling: INFINITELY WORSE THAN EITHER OF THOSE, BUT FOR A SHORTER TIME

Well, I didn't mean to knock anyone, but the "it'll get worse before it gets better" speech don't exactly fit with the uplifting point of the thread.

Scrambling: INFINITELY WORSE THAN EITHER OF THOSE, BUT FOR A SHORTER TIME

Poor you! as a mere 3rd year, I dare say you're right.
Hmm... maybe emotions are just too raw on SDN right now to start a positive thread - I will be back in a few weeks. 👍

I am sorry if I offened anyone with my niave comment about this next year being stressful, it appears to me stressfull, but I imagine like many other milestones in my life I will look back and think it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be before hand(try and beat that run-on sentence). I do appreciate the knowledge of those who have gone before, so I don't mind hearing that this next year won't be that bad, in fact it give me hope. Also thanks for the encouragement on networking, just like my mentor Larry the cable guy once said "Get Er Done!".

I loved my 4th year, most of it was like a vacation (except for that horrendous scramble thing).

I did away rotations in Florida and Australia, and generally had a great time.

No offense was taken (see smileys!)

Fourth year is so much fun... (minus the couple of weeks prior to match)

You should defiantely NOT wig out about it. Its a great time adn makes all the hard work you do as a ms1-3 so worth it.

*that* is the uplifting part. 🙂 Heed the advice that its a fun year and enjoy it.

Another CC3 here ready to join the mix.

Count me in. I am actually really looking forward to 4th year, especially the 5 months I am taking off when my baby comes🙂. After watching match yesterday at school, our time seems so near! Very exciting. Here's to a great 4th year!

Hi! Another MSIII (almost MSIV) here! Congrats to all that matched! I've been a long time lurker so I figured it's about time I piped up. I'm looking forward to going through the next year with all the other EM hopefuls 😀 .

Pikers, all of you. The only thing worse than scrambling is scrambling TWICE.

But I still got to the dance.

I'll give you that. Group sing "we shall overcome".

Oh, and no hard feelings to the OP. You will enjoy 4th year all the way up to Black Monday, and you have about a 95% chance of even enjoying it after that. Unless you couples match, then it goes down to 90%. Take your time, enjoy the scenery, because it is the least you will ever work again (probably, there are some gravy rotations in residency as well, such as research month).

I've spent the last couple of years reading posts in the EM forum, and I feel like I've learned so much from everyone here that it wouldn't be right if I didn't post my 4th year experiences for the classes behind me to read as well. Now that I have started to apply for EM electives, I feel like the process has begun. In other words, I'm totally in.

Congrats to all of you in the class of 2007, I really appreciated your posts and residency reviews.

What he said. Listen to Apollyon, too.

That being said, fourth year ROCKS. Yes, I scrambled. Yes, there was the pain of having to get ERAS completed, the damn PS written, and LORs in from flakey attendings who routinely lose cover sheets, demanding AIs where you pretend to be an intern, and then there were all the expenses of travelling and interviewing, but even with all that, FOURTH YEAR ROCKS.

And Like Dr.McNinja said, even if you do scramble, the glorious life of a fourth year is far from over. I'm on 2 weeks of vacation now (out of 6 total vacation weeks this year, not including my anesthesia, radiology, or ortho vacation rotations), and after this I'm taking ethics for a month. Ethics meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays for 3 hours, and we have to read a book or 2. I have plenty of time to exercise, sleep, cook, hang out with my friends, and hang out with my fiance (who is in another state) and really very little room to complain.

I'm a little worried that my school doesn't have the traditional 4th year. Since Penn starts a half a year early in the clinics, I have been an acting 4th year since January, taking electives and such. Though it's nice to not have a test to take, I have so far been expected to work at almost the same hours as the interns or fellow on my electives. I only get 2 weeks of vacation. What am I missing? 😕

I'm in too. Definitely looking forward to the end of third year and to the start of fourth. If I can get the schedule I want for fourth year, I'm looking at a solid three month block of chilling on the beach after the match. Can't wait...

I think I'l try to get MICU the month of the match so I will be too tired and busy to worry! 🙂

Anyways, who is going to the Medical Student Symposium at SAEM in May???

I'll be there.

Three more weeks of Peds and two months of OB/GYN (which is going to suck) and third year will be oficially over 🙂 . I am looking forward to my senior year...even though it will be expensive. Anyway, I'll be attending the SAEM conference hoping to learn more about the residency application process.

4th year is certainly the best year so far. Sure, I worked hard at away rotations, but I certainly enjoyed them since I was doing what I love to do! I interviewed at 11 places, but found each of them to be a vacation as much as anything and tried to 'take in' the various parts of the country I got to visit.

Today, I finished my CS exam and I finished my last rotation of medical school this past Wednesday. Its kick back time now till June 28th or so!!! Gotta sale my current house and find a new house..but thats all fun stuff.

I doubt retirement will be as much fun as 4th year has been!

You think the civilian EM match is stressful? Try the military EM match...50% of people are left to scramble....and there aren't any spots left to scramble into.

😱 That's shocking with the cutting edge EM being practiced in Iraq! :luck: to you, my friend.

Who wants to hit Chi-town Friday night with me? 😎

And, er- any ladies out there want to be roomates? 😳

Just out of curiosity, what makes you say that? Is there alot of big-time research going on?

Not really, I was just referring to the two specials I've seen featuring the ED in Iraq - they say they have a lot of cutting edge equipment, and there is a lot of freestyling going on in terms of what they don't have. A couple of physicians were talking about how they are learning alot of new things about trauma and its management for dealing with the ever-creative AEDs that they think they can use back in the US. I doubt they have had time to write any of it up, however, as they are taking care of not only injured US and Iraqi soldiers, but also insurgents. We do tend to learn alot of medicine in war, unfortunately.

Amory, out of curiousity, are you applying to EM or IM?

Interesting. I would probably argue that the simple fact that people are seeing lots of trauma doesn't neccesarily make the medicine being practiced "cutting edge" but I would love to know more about it.

I'm applying to EM, IM went out the window awhile ago.

No, no, I'm talking about the type of trauma inflicted by the AEDs and how they are dealing with it - overall, they may not be seeing more trauma than a knife and gun club.... You are always bustin' my chops 😛

I try to bust everyone's chops. That's the beauty of SDN. 😀

I can't believe it's our turn already!!

Another third year (7 weeks away from being a fourth year) here!

AED or IED? Are we talking trauma inflicted by defibrillators or improvised explosives?

I can see it now . . . "Next on CNN: Killer defibrillators! . . . . The bystander applied the pads and converted the patient's v-tach to a normal sinus but then the defibrillator attacked and maimed the patient, killing him. Is your AED safe? Comming up at 7!"

 As I was typing it my brain kept saying "Anti-Epileptic Drugs, yes?" (my internal monologuer talks like that Indian guy in the Simpsons)
and I was like, "no!" (I just finished Neuro).

Admit one.

I'm doing my "home" EM elective (I'm at P&S) at St. Luke's/Roosevelt in July, and my away elective in September at Utah.

Anyone else?

Ok, the updated list is below, I'm sure it will come in handy somehow, if only to evoke encoragement from other SDNers.

Don't know about you guys, but I am SO excited, esp since SAEM. I love working on my essay and reading about residency programs. Will be off next month studying frantically, do my home EM Sub-I in Philly and then head off to Christiana for my away. 😀

hello, add me to the list! i'm a bit of a late bloomer- didn't come out of the womb holding trauma shears, but i'm hopeful..

doing away rotations at Louisville and USC, both before my home program month. super psyched for both, they are great programs and I've never been to Kentucky so hopefully i'll get to explore!
