hello guys, i really need help with my situation. I'm currently a junior with a 3.6 over all GPA and 3.5 GPA in all prereq. I have 4 W's and a F on my transcript. all of the W's i got were for a a strong reasons. A W in a class that is not even a college credit course like REA0008. The other classes I had W in were repeated expect of one and got A and a B. The F i had was because of some serious problems i went through and i had it in the same semester i had a W in one of the courses. The course i had a F in was repeated and i meant to retake it with the same professor (incase if i get questioned) and i had an A in it. currently im preparing for my DAT, and im planning on taking it on july, and im studying really hard for it. Also, im going to apply to 50 dental schools, but before i do all of that, i really need an advise. Should i continue, or ami wasting time doing all of this? will the W's and the F be the reason for the rejection?...please respond. Thank you

Forget about all the random letters on your transcripts! There past is the past, and there is nothing you can do about it now besides pushing ahead. Your GPA is still great, and as long as other things in your app support your future success as a dentist, those W/F’s can be overlooked.

Also I would NOT apply to 50 schools!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Apply smart. You can eliminate quite a few schools based on your state of residence alone. Apply to your state schools, and then the out of state schools that take many out of starters, just like anyone else nervous about getting in.

i also had 4 W's on my transcripts with various reasons. also ur gpa is pretty similar to mine. u can check out my stats on predents. i think u really shouldn't worry to much but just make sure ur DATs are ok and u should be fine for even schools that are out of ur state. but i did get asked about my W;s at every interview so make sure u have reasons ready.

i also had 4 W's on my transcripts...

I beat you both for this tally. 😉

Although, I did have to take the long route to get in to D-school. 😳

I think you need to go to an oxygen bar to relax. You really have NOTHING to worry about. Just do well on the DAT and you will be all set. Apply to about 10 schools.

I have 2 W's and 2 F's on my transcript. Take comfort in knowing that others are in worse shape. 🙁

Yea, and most of those can't even consider dental school because they are in such bad shape. 🙁

^ Yikes, are my chances THAT bad? 🙁

Even though you may have a few bad grades, it sounds like you're doing well now. Dental schools like to see that upward trend.

Are they really that good? I mean, you're just inhaling O2. Is it flavored? How about the reactive oxygen species? lol

OP, You're fine. Don't worry about the W's. There are many people on this board who are/were in a similar situation. What matters is your application. Strong gpa and dats, a kickass personal statement, and a fair amount of experience out of school. Good luck!

Thank you guys......just kicking more motivation in me to push for more !

I have you all beat. I had 9 withdrawls back in 2001 when I didn't know what I wanted to do with my life. Then in 2003 I decided school was for me and since then I've posted a 3.74 science and cumm GPA and all my pre-reqs are done. Withdrawls are ok as long as they arent occuring every semester, mine were all clumped in one section, when they occur every semester or so, the adcoms may think you are using it to escape a failing grade.

selso- im in a similar situation... 3.68 GPA with 9W's.... did you get accepted to any schools?

Ouch, 9 W's? That's a little hardcore, be ready to have good reasons to explain those.

I am applying this cycle, but I've spoken to a few adcoms about it. I completly withdrew from my first two semesters of school, took 2 years off, then came back and didn't have any further withdraws. I had just returned from serving in the US army and was unsure of what I wanted to do so I enrolled and then dropped right after the drop period ended. I was ignorant then and didn't understand about withdraws. My academic record since then speaks for itself, I've never got an F, I had 1 C+ once.

Good luck with everything

selso- let me know what happens to you further on!! and Gluck!
