Just curious does my degree need to be 4 years to be considered eligible for medical school? I am planning on majoring in economics (arts based so little math and more theory). The general degree you only need 30 credit hours, the advanced degree 48 and the single honors 54. I was thinking of going for the single honors because that seems pretty easy. Anyways I know that most medical schools want you to do 90 credit hours so I wouldn't mind taking extra courses (most likely easy gpa boosters after my prerequisite stuff) but would my degree screw me over from applying it seems like a 2 year degree. I'll be starting uni in the fall so it isn't to late to change directions!

Edit: I should add I am from Canada and every class per semester is worth 3 credit hours with a max number of courses allowed to be taken during a semester as 5. So 30 credit hours a year. I plan on applying to US medical school.

You only need 30 credits total, or 30 credits for the major plus GE's? Can I ask what school this is?

Read my edit, the University of Manitoba. Most degrees require 90-120 but the Arts seem to be really slack.

If you want read page 27 there.

Someone else may have a better answer, but I think you may have to go school-by-school and see which will accept a low number of credits.

I think that most really do require at least 90 units, so you may be hard pressed to find one that doesn't AND will take international students. Sorry I don't have more info for you, I hope someone else does because it is an interesting question.

Haha thanks man, if it really does come down to some school being picky about this then I don't have a problem switching to the B.S of economics which is more math based and is 90 credit hours 🙂. I just hate math but what can you do

What about double majoring in something else that has a low number of units?
Also, you'll have a ton of med school pre-reqs to take up credits as well.

Yeah it makes sense. I'm taking 2 Bio's, 2 chems, 2 englishes, 2 econs this coming up year. I'll have 24 credit hours by the end of it. Second Year I'll be taking a year of calc, a year of ochem, plus whatever econ classes there after. I mean I'm going to have 90 credit hours + by the end of my time in Uni but if a 2-3 year degree is going to screw me over then I might as well just go for a 3-4 year or go for a double major.

For the record, I am a HUGE fan of majoring in 1.) What you are most interested in and 2.) What you can get good grades in; in that order. You can always take more bio and such to get units, and you sound like you will be MUCH happier in the Econ that isn't math heavy. You will have more interesting stories to tell in interviews and in essays if you are learning about things you like. Also, if you can, take a semester or a year and study abroad and get some cool credits that way.

Whatever you decide, good luck! And it is also always ok to change your mind🙂

Yeah, I actually am reading the Arts information in a booklet they gave us about degrees and requirements and it looks like I need 60 credit hours made up from 6 different faculties to get the degree aside from my 30. So it seems like it will all work out!

You should get a bachelor's degree. You can get it in however much time you want (though if you get it in less than 4 years and you're only taking a 12 unit course-load a semester, summers off, there might be some suspicion about the validity of such degree), but it should be a bachelor's.

Just for the record, my major only required like 30 credit hours as well... but I was still required to get 120 hours to graduate, in various fields (x number had to be upper division, y number had to be general science, English, math, etc). I don't see how your program description is much different. I mean, I only needed like 15 credits to minor in history... which is about what you need to minor in econ.
