I wanted to see what the doctor did. But I also had worked with the doctor I was shadowing previously for 2 years in a different department. He ended up writing me a great letter of recommendation.
Oh yeah, and I wanted to see blood.
Yes, blood.
(More blood!)
Seriously, I decided on Emergency Medicine 6 years ago. I had EMT exposure and wanted ER exposure. Both for me personally and for the admissions committees to know I was serious about my decision about my intended specialty. Without it I think I would be talking in theory that I might want to be involved with Emergency Medicine maybe...? (Or something equally waffley.) When I went ahead and put in the time to do it, I'd like to think that I proved it to myself and to whoever is reading my resume that I was serious. I still have time to change my specialty, but my time in the ER basically confirmed to me what I already knew.
