Since my first interview this application season I have thought of almost nothing but October 15th. Sure, I still went to work and spent time with family, but it has always been nagging at the back of my mind.

Last night around 9pm The right side of my body went numb and for about ten minutes every sentence I tried to say to my husband came out as an odd jumble of words. I was rushed to the emergency room and admitted since I had suffered a TIA (basically a small stroke that the body is able to correct).

I was just released a couple hours ago, and I have to say I think I'm cured of Oct 15th syndrome. I'm still excited (and now wanting to look into neurology) but I'm just so happy to be alive with no permanent damage. The 10 minutes that I couldn't get my thoughts out were terrifying. I felt all my med school dreams going up in flames in a matter of seconds.

So basically, when the med school app season is getting you down, be happy we have our health. I know I am. 🙂

Wow, how scary. Glad to hear you're doing well.

Wow indeed. From House of God: "...the first pulse to take is your own."

Relieved your are ok. We want you there for your future patients... And for you.

Of all the most terrifying things that I can think of happening to me, physically. A stroke which takes away the ability to communicate has got to be the most nightmarish.

I know it was a terrifying experience, but I would recommend that you remove that sentence from your post. Just an fyi...

Why on earth would you say that? I'm pretty sure OP can state this considering Yaz's website also states the same thing.

OP - glad you are ok. That is indeed terrifying. It is most frightening when the possible side effects come to fruition in real life for things that normally are ok for people.

I'm not sure why it's bad? I'm not saying it should never be taken, but I don't think there's anything wrong with women knowing the risk is there.

Is this something for which I will get banned? Sorry, really just confused.

Not banned; has nothing to do with SDN. It was just my opinion reading your post; ignore at will.

No. We don't allow people to ask for medical advice, but posting about your experience is fine. Besides, it's well established that BCPs in general can cause clots, especially in people with other risk factors like older age, smokers, and immobility.

Glad you're doing ok, and definitely don't take up smoking. 😉

I took it out anyway (everything makes me paranoid these days about admins seeing something they don't like from me on sdn, magically knowing who I am, and then not admitting me to their school, heh). However, by now I think it's been quoted so much it was a bit of a lost cause.
