How did you guys approach doctors to shadow? Did you just call their office and tell the nurse what you wanted to do? Do they just laugh in your face, or what? I've seen several MDs in action, but I'm curious about the DO thing and want to watch how they differ in their practice strategy. But how to get the ball rolling?

I would ask your family doc for a recommendation, I went through this a few years ago and mine was very helpful. They have to know lots of specialists to refer people to, so it shouldn't be a problem finding one to shadow. I don't know much about DOs, but if all else fails just call, I mean they had to go through the application process too, so some of them should be receptive to the idea.

I just got the phone book out and called different offices, until I found one willing to give me a chance. A couple I called (I only called MD offices, there are no DOs in my town) didn't really seem to have the time for us premeds, so I just moved on. I ended up in a clinic for indigent patients, as they seemed the ones who needed my help the most.

I actually went to my local med school and was able to shadow a DO who specialized in OMM. I also shadowed several graduates in different fields.
