Can anyone tell me if it is possible to accept a spot on a waitlist once you begin attending another school? My first choice school doesn't start until mid August wheras the school I am accepted to starts in early July.

My wife and I talked it over and we'd be willing to go to my first choice school even if it means forfiting a year's tuition at this other school (my first choice school is a state school and significantly cheaper than the school I'd be attending, plus we own a house in that city and my wife has a good job there).

Could I even realisticly do this or is there some rule against accepting a waitlist spot while attending another medschool? If there is such a rule where is it mentioned? On the AMCAS website? :scared:

If you don't mind biting the bullet on the tuition issue at the first school (which you don't), this shouldn't be a problem at all. Good luck!

I don't know if there is a rule against it, but I'm guessing a school wouldn't send you an acceptance once you've started attending another school. I don't have any evidence to back this up though.

On the AMCAS guidelines for medschool portion, there is a mention of not offering acceptances to students who are enrolled in classes/ in orientation at another school. It is in the rules and it's pretty much not allowed. Let me see if I can find that link.

Sorry dude. Maybe you should call up that school and let them know about your situation? What about deferring?

as far as i know, as soon as you attend the first day of orientation, you're not allowed to go elsewhere.

if it gets to be late june, i would try to contact the dean of admissions to see if they can assess your situation and give you a final decision. i'm in a similar situation but i'm not expecting much at all unfortunately. good luck!

Here it is, please refer to article 9 quoted here:

No school make an acceptance offer, either verbal or written, to any individual who has enrolled in, or begun an orientation program immediately prior to enrollment at, a U.S. or Canadian school. Enrollment is defined as being officially matriculated as a member of the school's first-year entering class.

I hope that first choice school lets you know soon!!!

Bummer. Hey it still could happen though. You never know... :luck:

Hey- by any chance are you attending Howard? I'm waitlisted at GW and their WL letter specifically indicates that they cannot offer you an acceptance if you have started orientation at another institution. I totally understand wanting to go to your first choice med school, but think about the consequences of you leaving during orientation. Not only would you lose a year's worth of tuition, but another potential applicant may not be admitted due to late timing. Good luck and hopefully it all works out!

Let me guess---is Case Western the school you've been accepted to?

You should send a letter or talk to the dean of your state school. This is a tough situation since you actually have more reasons than tution for wanting to stay their. I am not certain, but I would think they would take that into consideration. Hopefully you get in next week🙂 Good luck :luck:

do these rules apply to osteopathic schools as well or just LCME accredited schools? I'm in a similar situation with an acceptance at an osteo school that starts July 5 and waiting on four allopathic waitlists, one of which is my top choice school.

I feel for your situation but even if you could leave after starting it wouldn't really be fair to other people on the waitlist where you've been accepted. But the fact is that you can't as per AMCAS rules posted here. What you can do however, if you are that set on your state school, is defer or withdraw and hope for that waitlist spot to pull through. If not you could apply again next year, although this is risky. If I had to make the choice I would take the amazing opportunity you have already been given and go with it. This coming from a waitlister.

Just call the waitlisted school and explain the whole situation. I'd be surprised if they didn't accept you. Good luck.
