So this is the second quarter of my freshmen year. I had many family issues last quarter and my gpa is around 3.0 now. I am so upset about it and I seriously don't know what to do. I skipped one year high schul and took AP at home and skipped gen chem and Calculus. I'm taking o chem and higher level math which totally destroyed my GPA. The only good thing is I got into a lab in school medical center and I wonder if this is helpful. Do I still have a chance? Anyone has any good suggestion?? I'm really lost...🙁

It's too early to say you don't have a chance. You have three years in which you could do very well and boost your GPA into a more acceptable range. You could also do very well on the MCAT.

You could go either way; you're still at a point where you have a lot of say over whether or not you get a chance.

High schul?

so how did you skip gen chem and calculus to go into orgo and higher level math (whatever that means)...

if youre actually serious, yes you still have a chance.

If you're going to mess up a year, freshman is a good one

I studied aboard and pretty much wasted one year during high schul. and I went into college with 25 credits(AP CHEM 5 and AP Cal BC 4) and the schul let me jumped the general classes.

Do you think summer quarters are necessary, or helpful? Because I think taking art or history classes just for boosting GPA wont help much because med schul mainly look at sciences classes.

How is your spelling impeccable except for "schul". Trolling for spelling Nazis? Lol

isnt the word around sdn that you shouldnt take ap credit for pre reqs, for example general chemistry?

oh and i think the word on sdn for schul is skool 😎

You need to do well on your science classes in schul.

I don't have an opinion on summer quarters. You should try to do whatever you need to do to earn A's in the rest of your schuling.

I think the general consensus is it depends on what schools you're interested in, but regardless, if you do ap out, you should take higher level sciences.

I had a disaster freshman year as well....and worked my butt off to get it to where it's at now...although it's still considered pretty low...

Your GPA is one of the most important factors (if not the most important factor) schools will look at so you'll need to get as close to getting straight A's from now on. One bad semester won't kill you, especially if you had family issues during that semester. So work really really hard...

Getting into a lab is definitely good and will help your application, but only as a supplement to good grades. If you have to choose between the lab and grades, choose the good GPA.

The posters saying never say never are right. Incidentally, so is Justin Bieber.
The fact is that freshman year is a pretty hard time for a lot of people. What adcoms want to see most at this point is that you've learned from your mistakes. Do well in your science courses. Dominate your upper-levels. Do some EC work on the side. Three years is a lot of time to get all that stuff in. Upward trends are very noticeable, and that's good for you.

Posting in a high schul thread.

Actually I would say you didn't let your problems entirely sink your gpa; you still haave a 3.0. Do not worry, just take some classes and do well.

My o chem is not going on well. I want to retake but my advisor told me not to. Thats why Im confused

Stop spelling school as schul. It makes you sound like a *****. Stop making excuses for your difficulties as well. ADCOMs will appreciate it if you're willing to take responsibility for yourself, when you get to that point in the process.

Your advisor is right. There's no real point retaking ochem since MD schools don't do grade replacement. If you're interested in DO schools, feel free. However, you should probably just work on doing well for three years and your GPA will be fine for either degree.
