I still have to visit:

Wash U

Wake

I've cancelled:

Emory
MCV

and some others I can't remember.

I got an email from some of my former crew on the East Coast. Yale at one point, post Rosai being there was a cluster f--k, they recently hired a TON of solid people. Like an insta-powa house. I think Tavassoli is there now even. A bunch of solid mol path/dermies. Im officially recanting all Yale hate Ive posted in the past (although go Harvard!, Big H is still no1).

When I visited Yale I was actually blown away by their program. It's far down on my list for reasons other than quality.

Interesting -- What aspect of your Yale experience didn't you like?

How was your day at MGH?

Thank you much!

It may sound stupid, but I didn't feel like I would fit in well with the residents at Yale. They were nice and all but I just didn't get the right vibe. Each program seems to have a certain personality, and Yale's didn't suit me.

I loved MGH. The residents are awesome and I did feel I would fit in there. What I didn't like was the short turn around time. Basically you gross in your cases during the day and then read your slides in the evening. The next morning you sign out with the attending. And you have A LOT of cases. I honestly wasn't sure if I could keep up and I was afraid I would be neglecting my family. I also didn't like the idea of living in Boston.

My theory is it has to do with the axillary contents that is the city of New Haven. What a pit! I visited there when applying for undergrad (as well as driving through on a few occasions since) and it was similar to my experience in Athens, Greece, where all I wanted to do was leave and hope that I escaped with all of my money and all of my body parts and I needed to take a long shower afterwards.

Connecticut, specifically the southwestern portion, is also highly expensive.

Of course, some people do like it so don't take my word for it, certainly.

Good point about the residents - a couple of programs I visited I had that experience - specifically Brigham, Chicago, Dartmouth. It all depends on who you meet that day. Then of course there was the opposite experience like when I went to Penn and almost asked one of the residents to marry me.

I got the same feeling too. The residents there were nice, answered all my questions, and every one of them made an attempt to introduce themselves to each of the applicants. I didn't have as positive an experience with one of the faculty interviewers. Many of them didn't read my CV and asked me questions that could have been clearly answered by reading my CV. And one of interviewers didn't seem interested in getting to know me at all and I was really turned off by that. I got the sense that their AP program is really strong. Each subspecialty seems to be very strong with alot of well known specialists. And their organization of surgical pathology into subspecialties is appealling. They also have a big case load given their demographic location and I'm sure their residents get to see alot of unusual big cases. However, overall I didn't get a sense that I would be a good fit in the program and the atmosphere was somewhat stuffy.

I've only had five interviews so far, but making this match list is going to be really really hard.
