Hey guys, happy Friday 🙂 So, I have a question that I was wondering if anyone (students, residents, PD's) has somewhat of an answer to.

My school started this weird thing for students finishing second year, next semester, due to some NSLDS (federal loan) policy. According to the policy, they are required to report us as "Temporary Withdraw" at the end of second year, if we take a dedicated period to study for step 1, for however long the period is. You are still a student and everything with the temp withdraw and the temporary withdraw status is removed once we take step 1 and start third year. They said that it will be written in the MSPE, as well. So if this is a school/NSLDS federal loan policy, is this a "gap" I have to report, if it is explained in the MSPE?

I'm really confused about how this would look, so any insight would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Is this a Carib school??????

yeah it is, i'm just wondering whether I have to explain the policy change or not myself lol
Just a shot in the dark on that one.

My radar is going off that your school is trying to pull a fast one on you, and in no way should you agree to this until you can fully check it out to see that it's legit.

You already have a red flag of being a Carib student, don't add any more.

i'm confused on how I am adding the red flag? lol I understand that i'm a carib student but what does that have to do with my school implementing a policy that I didn't ask for in the first place? I'm just confused on if this were true whether or not this would have to be explained, considering everyone with me and beyond would have this in their MSPE.

What do you think a PD would think???

thanks for linking that account. I just thought to add this for them: we do not get more than one month of time off, in between semesters. We are on a quarter system so 3 weeks off in between semesters is all we get. So the period that you would have a temporary withdrawal is for the 6-8 weeks you would take at the end of second year to take step 1.

Would it matter if you only took 3-4 weeks? Or 2-3 weeks? Or are they saying any time taken off at the end of second year requires a temp withdraw

so I called them and they said the temp withdraw on the MSPE is indicating that you're not enrolled in any active basic science classes for however long you take to study for step 1. Other than that, they said if its more than 31 days then it will be a "temp withdraw" now instead of a "vacation period" on your MSPE. Also, your status remains enrolled throughout temp withdraw, which is indicated on the MSPE, as well. It is suppose to account for the time you aren't enrolled in basic sciences classes and studying for step1.

All schools have a dedicated study period yet I’ve never heard of any in the US having their students withdraw for MSPE or loan purposes. This sounds really sketchy.
I don't know why it sounds sketchy to you? like the school didn't create this email lol. It's official correspondence from the federal loan government that they attached to their own e-mail, to us. No we don't have any changes in loans or anything unless we've been out for whatever the period is (6 months etc). Yeah i'm aware of the standard US school system but this isn't a US school right.. also, I mentioned that you aren't withdrawn. You are still an active student - its to indicate that you're not enrolled in any basic science classes at the moment and are using it to study for step 1.

You yourself titled this thread “weird situation”. Weird or sketchy, what’s the difference?

That’s the case for anyone studying for Step 1. Or breaks between semesters. This doesn’t make sense. Unless you’re taking an extended study period/leave of absence that causes you to deviate from a standard course of study.

cool thanks

Do you really think you can use the words weird and sketchy interchangeably? lol there are tons of situations, outside of this, that you can get into which are weird but not sketchy. I used the word weird not to assess the validity of the situation. I used that word to say that I find myself in a predicament as to what to do in terms of having to explain this or not.. since its already explained in the MSPE and isn't some unusual or unexplainable break I took in between or for a prolonged amount of time.

Not a huge deal, but not all schools have dedicated study time. My DO school did not, nor did we have time off for residency interviewing.
