In the grand scheme of things… getting double boarded - does it really mean anything? Payers don’t seem to mandate the certification for billing. Employers largely just care that you’re board eligible and/or certified in your primary specialty. Sure, passing pain boards feels nice but does it actually change anyone’s life?

It’s a part of the continuum of being board eligible…I don’t know any HOPD gigs these days that will hire non-future boarded docs. At my shop, you have to be boarded within 12 months of hire…

Depends where you’re at. I’m rural HOPD. My hospital definitely doesn’t care and is happy to have a doc willing to work out there.

No, they care. They fired Dr CC (she is deceased now) because she lost her board eligibility due to not passing in a sufficient time window.

I see it as giving me the most “right” to legally practice interventional pain medicine. If I ever find myself in a court case, at least they won’t be able to use lack of board certification against me.

Board certification is a must in this era. Employers, hospital creditionaling boards, and malpractice carriers are requiring it.

Suggestion - find a medium sized book on pain medicine and read it cover to cover to study for the exam. It makes taking the exam worthwhile.
