I was a freshman this past year (09-10). I took on a really heavy courseload and on top of that I had lots of personal issues going on. As a result, I was put on academic probation the first semester and then suspended the second semester. My counselors were VERY unhelpful. I was told that I have to stay out for a year. I have learned from this experience and I am ready to move on, but I feel like this blemish on my record will prevent me from achieving my dream. Right now I'm sitting here contemplating what I can do now, what steps I should take, and if my chance at dental school is gone. PLEASE, offer any words of advice you have, and let me know of any personal experiences with this type of situation.

Also, I'm thinking about going to a cc for a year. Should I even transfer back to my old school afterwards? I think it would be better, so I could replace those F's, but I can't even stand that place right now.

Don't worry, your dream of going to dental school is not totally over. It's going to take a lot of hard work on your part, but it is still very possible. You can check out the under 3.0 thread since there are a lot of similar stories in there. I would not take courses at a CC b/c many dental schools require pre-reqs to be taken at a 4 year university. Also, your F's will never be replaced b/c you will still have to report those grades to AADSAS when you fill out your dental school application. Since you don't feel comfortable at this university, I would suggest you apply to another and re-evaluate your study skills.

Thanks so far for the replies.

I failed my general chemistry course with an F. So if I retake it, and get an A, will AADSAS average out the A and the F?

When you fill out your AADSAS application, you'll have to enter your F (0.0) and your A (4.0), so the F will still count in your AADSAS GPA. So I guess theoretically it does average out to a 2.0 if those were the only two courses you included in your application.

Have you resolved your personal issues? If not, I strongly suggest you hold off on more school (or just take a really light load) until you have them under control. If they will be ongoing (drug addicted or mentally ill parent), I suggest you seek help from a counselor and learn some healthy coping skills. If the issues were short term and you are able to move on, then do it. Enroll in a cc or different university. Focus on school for the next year and forgive yourself for you past academic underachievement.

If most dental schools require pre-req courses to be done at a 4 year university, then that would mean I have to wait untill my junior year to take them. Will I still be able to graduate in 4 years and have time for ec's, research, volunteering, and other related things if I do wait until my junior year?
