Hello,

If I got accepted into a program that doesn't participate in the match and they asked me to sign the offer letter and pay a deposit. Is it possible to still participate in the match and go to another program?
I understand that the deposit is non-refundable, and I am okay with that, but they need the decision before the match results are out

Yes. Just risk losing your deposit.
You risk a lot more than that, you risk losing your seat at either program. If you accept a non-Match position, you must withdraw yourself from the Match. Not doing so is a Match violation. There can be significant consequences for violating the Match.

If that's the only downside I am okay with it.

Thank you for clearing that up, what I understood is that match is binding. You can't leave a match program for a non-match spot. However, what I am asking is the other way around. Can I leave a non-match spot for a match one. Given that they didn't ask me to withdraw from the match just a deposit.

Clearly you didn’t read what I posted very well. Look at item #4 of the Match applicant agreement. It’s unmistakably spelled out right there. If you accept a non-Match spot, you are supposed to submit a withdrawal from the Match and you are not allowed to submit a rank order list to the Match. You accept the non-Match spot and you’re done. That’s it.

If you try to game the system, here’s how that can play out. Let’s say you accept the non-Match spot and still submit a rank order to the Match. Now let’s say you Match to a program you’d rather attend than the non-Match program. So, you bale out of the non-Match program. Now the non-Match program has to scramble to fill their spot and they are likely going to have to fill it with a poor candidate that didn’t Match and that they really don’t want. They’re pissed. They find out that you Matched and contact the Match and/or the other program. Academia is a surprisingly small world. Now the program you Matched at is pissed. They revoke your spot and you are barred from participating in the Match in the future. Now you have no spot, Match or non-Match.

Play stupid games, and win stupid prizes.

Thanks I think I will go with the offer I accepted as you said our word needs to mean something. Thanks for the advice.
Bird in the hand is worth two in the bush…unless stupidly expensive
Yeah that's the problem the pre match program is twice the cost of the match one.
