I thought I would start a thread for people to share their MPH application status for fall 2011. I was thinking it would go something like this:

Share some stats

Date submitted

List of schools categorized by applied, accepted, rejected, and waitlist with date of response

For example:

GRE: 700V, 760Q, 5.5W
MCAT: 33T
Undergrad GPA: 3.4
3rd-year medical student
Waiting on: JHU, Yale, Harvard, Columbia, Emory, Tulane, BU, UCB

If you don't mind me asking, how were you rejected/accepted from schools at future dates?

They were giving an example...
Thus why they said "for example"
:)

I fixed my "example" so that now it is accurate. Sorry for the confusion:p

I'm glad you started this thread, I just have one recommendation that might be helpful to others. It's your choice if you think it's good though. I think we should include the date that SOPHAS mailed our apps in addition to the day we submitted them so that others can gauge how long the processing is taking.

Good luck everyone!

Hi. This is my first post on SDN! I submitted my SOPHAS today after a grueling 13 hours straight finishing up personal statements and whatnot.

Undergrad GPA: 3.59 (history), 3.02 (unofficial pre-med post-bacc)
GRE: 660 Q, 570 V, 4.5 AW

SOPHAS mailed: Nov. 12
Waiting on: Emory, Boston, Columbia, Yale, Hopkins, UMn, UTH, Berkeley, UWash

I haven't cast my net wide enough, but I'm still planning on applying to a couple other schools. To make matters worse, I found about 3 type-os in my PS after it was too late! I'm a bundle of nerves. Still waiting on 2/4 LORs and one silly little summer program transcript. :lame:

Just submitted the application today. Here's my stat:

GPA: 3.1
GRE: 690v, 700m, 3.0aw
1 year research experience, 2 years of work/internship in healthcare field, currently working in health-related non-profit organization
Submitted: 11/13
Schools waiting on: BU, Emory, St. Louis (missouri), Pittsburgh, UNC, Yale, Columbia

I'm not sure if I should apply to more schools later; worried about the GRE writing score..:(

Might Apply to Yale and U Mich.

Sidenote: Ugh I'm so nervous!

That's still a decent GPA and good Q GRE score. I assume you have a previous advanced degree if you're applying to Harvard? What program/concentration did you apply for?

Last application season your app had to be in by Monday and would go out on Tueday. When you would call they would say there was no set day but then when people saw when their app was actually sent it turned out to be every Tuesday. The year before people said Friday. Not to bring bad news but a bunch of programs that do not have rolling admissions don't start sending out decisions until January (not all just some).

Thanks for the reassurance! I do not have an advanced degree just a Bachelors.
I'm applying to Harvards MS Program not MPH (The MPH requires an advanced degree, MS however does not)

I applied for an MS in Global Health & Population

SOPHAS is moving super fast... I submitted all my stuff on 11/9 and it was verified today 11/19!! AHHH!

I submitted my SOPHAS application on November 7th, and my application is still not verified or mailed. I even emailed them (because in my opinion their phone customer service people are very rude), and here is the response I got:

1. Your application is complete and in line to be processed. The notification
email which is sent to applicants when they are complete is currently not
working. As it states in our FAQs, https://portal.sophas.org/applicants2011/faq/general.shtml#twenty, your
application can take up to FOUR (4) weeks from when it is COMPLETE to be
processed (GPA calculation). Once your application is processed, it will be
included in our mailing.

2. No, your application is not being held up by your GRE scores.

So, I guess it's not moving fast for everyone...

Did you explicitly state you are a first generation college student or did you just simply check the box asking if you were one?

How do you know when your application is verified? Do they (SOPHAS) email you saying that the application has been verified? I have submitted mine on 11/13 and haven't gotten any email from SOPHAS yet. And my transcripts have not been calculated/verified yet either. They received them a month ago (said on my SOPHAS account page). I know it will take some time, 3-4 weeks? I just want to make sure :)

They will email you when your application is verified and inform you that it will be sent out in the next mailing cycle (they mail once weekly). At that time you should be able to view your calculated GPAs, etc. Calculating all that is what makes it "verified" so that's what takes so much time and why you can't view them until the application is verified.

You said they received your transcripts a month ago...were at least 2 of your letters of recommendation (LOR)s in? They don't consider an application "complete" and ready for the verification process until ALL transcripts and at least 2 LORs are received. If all of that was in for you a month ago it would never hurt to send them an email and just say that you wanted to make sure that your application is complete and that there isn't anything left that you need to do that is keeping it from being verified.

Good luck!

Major: Biopsych from top 5 public university
GPA: 3.71
GRE: 780Q 600V 4W

Applying from undergrad. 5 summers working at a dental practice, 1 year lab research, decent leadership/involvement, business electives.

MPH/MHSA - Health Policy + Management Dept
SOPHAS submitted 11/17/10 Michigan, UCLA, Emory, BU, GWU
UNC and Rush(HSM) by Dec 1

Does anyone have any thoughts/suggestions of top MHA programs not offered through schools of public health that I would be qualified for coming straight from undergrad? Or thoughts on my chances for Columbia/JHU?

Did you explicitly state you are a first generation college student or did you just simply check the box asking if you were one?

if there was a box i'm sure i clicked it, but i'm also stating it in all my personal statements

So my application got mailed today (11/23) and the only reason I know that is because I checked my actual application on SOPHAS and in that side bar it says mailed: 4. I never got an email. Will I get an email from SOPHAS? Also, does anyone know how long it takes the schools to email us saying they received our applications? HELP, I'm going nuts here.

I am sorry if this is in the wrong section but I reading this makes me reconsidering applying to MPH or MS programs in Epidemiology for next fall. The websites say the deadline dates are anywhere between Dec and Feb 1st but you all have submitted your applications. Is it too late to submit mine? Also, can anyone who has been submitted or has any opinions let me know if they think I am eligilble?

GPA: 2.9 Psychology Major, Biology Minor from UCSD
GRE: Verbal 450 Quant: 660 Analytical: 4.0
Experience: Worked for 2 years at the neuroscience lab at UCSD running MRIs on subjects with huntingtons disease (was published for that work), and I am now project coordinator/Staff research assitant II for a 15 year longitudinal twin study with Veterens aging effects in the brain.
Languages: Speak Arabic, spanish fluenty and learning French (to improve my global skills)

sorry this post is so long. I am panicking! do you think I can get into the following schools:
Harvard (requires 2 year minimum experience)
Yale
Columbia
UCLA
UC Berkely
BU
Dartmouth

SMD18-
My apps were mailed out in last week's mailing and I just got an email from SOPHAS today saying they were mailed.
I've heard from 3/4 schools I submitted to saying the have received my application and are processing it for completeness. GW emailed the day the application was mailed, BU 2 days later and Emory just today.
Hope this helps!

Maybe Sophas just got up on the "your apps have been mailed" email - I just got one today and my applications were mailed on 10/18 (which I found out by stalking my Sophas account for updates). All the schools have received them and I already received one acceptance, so I know they were complete, haha.

neuroepihopeful - you still have plenty of time to submit your application! I've received emails from two schools saying that, although they are accepting fall applications, they are currently reviewing Spring 2011 apps only and will not start looking at fall apps for a few more weeks (one of those was BU which is on your list). Some schools are rolling admissions and those review as the apps are received, but I think this is only a small number of the PH schools. As far as being qualified/odds of getting in, you'll never know unless you try!! I think that anyone who has perused this board for acceptances in prior years can agree that there is no real guarantee for anyone regardless of their stats or background. I have certainly seen people with similar scores to yours post that they were accepted into multiple programs. I think it will be important for you to contact the schools or focus on your experience, etc in personal essays as many of the schools indicate that you should have at least a 3.0 GPA from undergrad. However, if you contact admissions and establish a report, have a focused and well written personal statement, and great letters of recommendation then you can be a competitive applicant! I have seen on here where people with amazing stats have been rejected from the same school where people with much lower scores have been accepted. It seems that most schools look at the total package and not just numbers on a piece of paper.

Good luck to everyone!

hi everyone :)

your posts made me more convinced that the only reply am gonna get for my application is ( r u kidding).

am applying for fall 2011,minnesota and BU, but i didn't submit my application yet cause am waiting for my third LOR.
BELIEVE IT OR NOT
i've no work experience..at all(MD,one year healthcare quality diploma)

NeuroEpi, I think you should definitely apply. I am also applying with <3.0 GPA and a decent GRE (610 V, 630Q). I decided to apply anyway because I am positive that I want a career in public health( specifically as an independent investigator). I believe that my community involvement (10+ years) and research experience(4 years total, 2 years working full-time with an epi research group.) will bring a lot to my application. I have 4 publications to date ( 1 is a 1st authorship) as well as a ton of abstracts and poster presentations. Because I've worked so closely with many researchers in the field, I was also able to get 3 excellent LORs. I figured, at worst I'll get rejected. :) I know that I may not get into my dream school, but I really believe that I can at least get into one. You never know what will happen so just apply.
