Accepted, Fall 2011!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Didn't get in to Berkeley (MPH Epi/Biostat). Just found out via email. Doesn't really matter since I've pretty much decided on UW anyway!

Applied: UW, Emory, UNC, BU, Hopkins, Harvard, Yale, UPitt, UCLA, Berkeley
Accepted: UW, Emory, UNC, UPitt
Rejected: Yale, Berkeley

I submitted my Berkeley app back at the end of November, received a mass email from them at the beginning of January about my application being under review, and the rejection email today.

Stats-
GRE: 650V, 740Q. 5.5AW
GPA: 3.62 (undergrad), 3.78 (grad)
BA International Relations, BBA International Business, BA German
MA International Studies with a Certificate in Global Health Affairs
Two separate RA positions and an internship with WHO.

Good luck to everyone still waiting!

Yayy! you too? Haha I figured Berkeley would reject me, but such a generic email! UGH!

Hey ppl,

I just accepted into Yale for their Healthcare Management program ??

Is there anyone whose received an offer for the same, and is anyone planning on visiting the university any time soon ?

Also, I needed to know how good the program really is, if at all anyone could throw some light on the actualities ?

Honestly, if you are purely interested in management and have little to no desire in pursuing electives during grad school Hopkins is the way to go for an MHA compared to all other programs.

me too. I was pretty sure they were going to reject me. I was going 6 for 6 though so I guess I didn't really know what to expect. I'm disappointed, but not devastated. It just means I will be staying here on the east coast, not too shabby.

On the bright side I did get into UPitt this morning. I'm going to decline, but it was nice to hear anyway.

Good luck everyone. Hope you keep hearing good news.

Congratulations on your acceptances guys.

Yale and Berkeley out!

Got accepted to Tulane, Texas-Houston, UIC, GW and UPenn

Waiting: UCLA, UPitt, JHU :xf:

Do any of you apply for MS in clinical epidemiology/research? I apply for MSCE at UPitt, UPenn and JH. Not so much hope in JH as my stats are so poor 🙁

Is anyone still waiting to hear from U of Michigan? It seems like everyone has already heard...

Accepted: Columbia (EHS Enviro and Molecular Epidemiology)
Waiting: Michigan, BU

Undergrad: Health Studies at Mich State U
GPA: 3.45
GRE: 550V, 720Q, 4W
SOPHAS Submitted 1/14
1 year of enviro health work with Americorps

SOPHAS took forever to mail my apps out and I was pretty last minute, so I hope that's not a problem. Michigan is my top choice. Thoughts? Anyone in the same boat?
menupop.gif

If it helps, I haven't heard from U Mich since they confirmed that my application was complete(1/27), but I applied late in the game too. Also, I applied to HBHE so those departments may have different timelines. Just wanted to let you know you're not alone!

Oh my gosh, congrats! That's amazing, especially since Berkeley has always just seemed extra selective! I just dislike that all these schools are going to be asking for transcripts again =\ It costs me a finger each time I have to get transcripts mailed from Australia in time.

I was wondering, would you mind sharing your stats?

Sure thing!

-GRE: 720 Q, 690 V, 5.0 for the writing portion
-Overall GPA: 3.35
-Upper division: 3.55
-Graduated with a B.A. in English, but I also took all the pre-med science courses+1 year of calculus+upper level science courses
-Some of my extracurricular and other experiences: 6 years volunteering at a hospital, 2 years participating in community health checkups for the Indian community, one year as a Sophomore Adviser, a summer of lab work, extensive shadowing experience (of physicians), 3 months volunteering abroad this past year, 2 years as an English tutor for immigrants; more recently, I have volunteered at a domestic abuse shelter and I am now interning at a human rights education organization

just received a rejection by UCLA dept of Health Services. really bummed. was def my top choice. They basically send you an email telling you to check the gradnet website. (I noticed people who got accepted to this department received phone calls... but I never got one... so it kind of gave me a preconception of the rejection. Nevertheless... quite disappointed. :/

Love to hear some thoughts on what you guys have to make a decision!

Congrats, that's awesome! When did you apply to UT-Houston?

Ugghh frustrating. My UT app was sent in around that time too. Oh the agony -__-

I didn't know that UMDNJ had a secondary app that we need to fill! Maybe I can cut to the chase and send it to them before they have to ask me about it. I haven't heard from them since forever, too =(

Thanks for the info, Ashy

hey swaffles
just got my formal acceptance email from UT houston.😀
ummm,,,UMDNJ sent me a paper supplemental application via post after reviewing my primary application,,hope this helps..

Was honestly surprised to get a rejection from Berkeley just now.
Had applied to MPH in Epi/Biostats as first choice and MPH in HSB as 2nd choice. No mention of whether or not I had been considered for my 2nd choice department in the rejection letter. Very disappointed.

Stats:
GRE: 610 V, 760 Q, 4.5 AW
GPA: 3.4 undergrad, 3.68 grad at Stanford
BA in Human Bio, MA in Latin American Studies
3+ years of full time work experience in public health, including abroad

Well, for what it's worth, I'm surprised you didn't get in too. You seem super qualified. I'm sure something will fall in place for you, and it will be for the best. Or... try again next year.

Did you hear back from UCB? I hope you got into the program you applied to!

Swaffles,

I called UT today and the admissions lady said that there is going to be a meeting for admittance selection tomorrow morning. She checked on my application and emailed the committee asking them to look at my application since I wasn't on the list for tomorrow's review. Did you call them to see if your application has already been sent to the department? She also said that we should hear from the school in 3 weeks, at the latest.

Thanks and congrats to you too!
I submitted my application to BU on 2/01, received the "application complete" email on 2/08 and haven't heard anything else yet.
Doesn't seem like anyone on this board has gotten BU decisions yet though, so I wouldn't be worried.

Strangely, my email didn't saying anything about 4-6 weeks? All it said is that they received my app and were preparing it for review, and I would receive another email in the near future regarding application status, whatever that means. 😕

Cerealrhapsody,

I also submitted my application to BU around the same time (received the application complete on the same day). No news here either.

Did you get an email from BU about setting up an account to fill out your financial aid information today? I received it a few hours ago and am not sure if I should fill it out or not since I haven't heard any news from the school😕

I also submitted my app to BU right around the beginning of Feb (the "app received" e-mail came on 2/2) and just got the financial aid application information. Anyone else think MyFAPP is a bit ridiculous? The "family background" section asks for information about the primary school(s) you attended. I've moved something like fifteen times... how will knowing the addresses of every elementary school I attended help them to determine my financial aid eligibility for a graduate program? Most of the actual financial questions they're asking were covered on FAFSA.

Just another hoop to jump through, I guess. 🙄

Haha yeah their form seems a little over-zealous. Although it actually let me submit the form with only my high school information, for what it's worth. (Hopefully that won't cause me any problems...)

Not yet but now I'm going to! The last time I called, it was just to make sure that my online account was fixed. I'll definitely call tomorrow morning though. Thanks for the heads-up, pamo! And good luck! I always imagine that they sit around a round table and they all wear glasses.

Cerealrhapsody and Pamo -

I received an "application received" email from BU on 1/25, a day or two after I submitted to SOPHAs. On 2/10 I received an "application complete" email from BU; this email mentioned that I would hear back about a decision within 4-6 weeks via postal service.

Did you get both the "application received" and the "application complete" emails?

Oh wow, no, I only got the "received" email. Guess I have an even longer wait than I thought. 🙁

their accepted students day is march 11--so it would be dumb if they did not accept everyone they were going to accept by then.

🙂

Just got into UCLA and SDSU via email!!!! :soexcited::soexcited::soexcited:

Sure.

Major: Math & Economics (Joint)
Undergrad GPA: 3.60 @ a top 10 public school in California
GRE: 630V, 780Q
Tons of teaching experience, but absolutely no public health or research experience 😱 lol
Decent to strong letters of rec
More or less strong Statement of Purpose
Had a full ride scholarship as an undergrad

Accepted: UW (w/supp), Columbia, UCLA, SDSU
Rejected: None
Waitlisted: BU
Waiting: U Penn, Cal, Yale, Harvard, U of Chic., UC Davis, JHU, UConn

All MS/MA programs in Biostatistics.

Thanks ancvansch! Good advice 🙂

Nada yet... I'm going with "no news is good news", but I also think that if they were wild about me, I would have heard already. Anyway, it's nerve-wracking, as we all know. 🙂 I'm in San Francisco, so Berkeley would be ideal for me, but I could also get excited about the prospect of moving elsewhere...

Also, I just read that Columbia is slightly changing its program starting in 2012, including adding a "specialization certificate." I'm not sure what you can specialize in, but I am hoping that I will be able to concentrate in health promotion AND get a certificate in global health. http://www.mailman.columbia.edu/academics/mph-2012-welcome/columbia-mph-2012/new-mph-program-options

And, if you stick with global health and realize that you'd rather be in health promotion, from what the current Mailman student told me, it shouldn't be too much of a problem to switch concentrations.

Cool, thanks for all the info.! Yeah it sounds like it wouldn't be too tough to switch concentrations if that's what I decided to do...

got into SDSU via mail. (No email though....interesting).

So far:

Ohio State, Drexel and SDSU. Any advice?

Accepted: Berkeley (epi/biostats), U of MN (epi)
Waiting: UWash (public health genetics MPH), UC-Denver (epi)

GPA: 3.5 small liberal arts school
BA in Biology and Management, graduated 08
760 Q, 640 V, 5.0 A
2 years molecular bio lab research, 1 year working in a radiology clinic
5 years part time clinical research (partly during undergrad)

First choice Berkeley but U of MN would be cheaper because I have MN residency...hmm..

Just got accepted for epi MPH, my second choice at Emory! First choice was global epi.

Accepted: Tulane (epi mph), Emory (epi mph)
Rejected: Emory (global epi mph)
Waiting: USF (global epi joint program), UTHouston (epi), BU (epi)

Honestly, Emory is pretty much my first choice so I'm tempted to just go ahead and commit now, especially since very soon I'm going to be abroad without reliable internet access for 2 months. But I'm so concerned about the debt...and USF (Florida resident) and UT would be SO much cheaper...I don't know what to do. 😳

Just got accepted to Emory's Global Epidemiology program!

I didn't think I'd have a chance because I sent my application in a few days after the deadline, but I'm so glad to get in ^_^

Definitely won't get any scholarships because of the late submission, though.

congrats! Does anyone know if it would be easy to swap concentrations at emory? i.e. switching from MCH to environmental or.. epi to global epi.. etc.

I got in emory mph envirn health.mailed the admissions office asking whether its possible to change my concentration EH to EPI and the reply was.....

Thank you for your email. It is possible to change departments after you begin but you will be required to receive permission from both your current department and the department into which you are attempting to switch. You will essentially receive an admissions review by the department you are trying to move into and should they deny your file you will not be able to switch. Please let us know if you have any further questions.

Dammit swaffles, you probably took my seat! lol jk 😀
Seriously though, I looked at your stats and they seem pretty similar to mine. What do you think helped you get in? Strong personal statement? Do you have a lot of travel experience or language proficiency? I'm not really shocked I was rejected, but I'm trying to figure out if it was a lack of international experience or something else.
Also, are you considering taking Emory's offer or is another school higher on your list? Congrats! 🙂

I got into UofMich today via email 😛. My application was received on 1/25.

Thanks! I honestly didn't think my personal statement was that strong but I guess it accomplished its goal. I had my public health professor read through it though, and he helped me properly highlight what would be relevant. A lot of my personal statement came from a human rights perspective and I wrote a few specifics about what I plan to do with my MPH at the end.

I don't have any travel experience other than studying abroad and I only have a basic working knowledge of Spanish at the moment (I'm taking spanish and french classes right now to work on that).

I think it probably helped me that I had professors who REALLY liked me recommend me and I also was part of a bunch of honor societies and clubs at my undergrad. Also, as small as it is, a slight difference in our GRE and GPA scores could have been the deciding factor, but overall, I have no clue as to what worked for them.

As for choosing Emory, I'm afraid I can't tell you yet. It was a last minute but well thought out decision on my part, after I read about all the good things about it on this forum. It is definitely one of my top choices, though.

I hope that helps a bit!

A note about switching at Emory- I can't comment on the "ease" of switching or what goes into it but I do know of 2 people that switched concentrations from 1st to 2nd semester. One went from BSHE to epi and the other from GH to Global epi (glepi as it's called here!)

Has anybody had any luck getting an extended deadline on the decision to attend Columbia (those w/ a 3/15 decision deadline)? I would really like to visit the school and see if any of the other east coast schools to which I applied accept me so that I can combine my visits (I'm on the west coast and can't get a lot of time off) before I make a decision, preferably at the 3/24 day.

Yup!
I asked if I could be extended given that I want to attend the first admitted students session and they accommodated the request. So definitely ask!

I wasn't expecting to have this many options, so I'm really at a loss for where I want to go. The only school that has rejected me (UW), is the only school I definitely would have gone to.
