I have been accepted to my #1 school, now I have 9 months until I start. I don't have any classes to finish, but I do have a FT job at a hospital. I'm not crazy enough to think I can get ahead, I just want to keep mentally active. What can I do to keep my brain from rotting? Should I try to study at all?

I've been told by a family-friend med student to read read read before medical school. Read fiction, philosophy, or any other subjects that may appeal to you. Apparently increasing your verbal is apparently a very useful tool that can help make med school easier.

I plan to work part-time, read, pick up a guitar, social A LOT, and travel the last month before med school.

Read Robbins pathology from front to back.

On a real note: travel, relax, read, pick up a hobby, save up some money for med school and proposing to your SO (that's my plan!) :O

Seconded.

Congratulations on the acceptance, OP. 🙂

Enjoy your time that you have left before you are required to focus. Don't burn yourself before getting to med school. I do agree with others that reading books (not textbooks) will be good. There are some really good one that have been recommended on the forum.

So I assume that the thing to do between now and medical school is

1. Propose to SO
2. Read books for fun
3. Workout. Gotta look decent for OMM.
4. Travel since we won't have any time in medical school.
5. Sleep
6. Work

I think sleep should be above workout 😉 but thanks for all the congrats and luck about the proposing! Will let you know when it happens and post on vine! 😛

Totally doing everything listed above. Especially traveling. Plans to go to San Fran, road trippin' to Utah, Arizona, and Nevada, and possibly Israel to visit the significant other's homeland/meet the fam.

I keep trying to work out but I am lazy hahaha....

And since its getting colder up here in Wisconsin everyone is like:

I need like a virtual workout buddy to kick me into shape and harass me when I dont work out.

I'd try to help you out but I'm currently on a hiatus until my retake on 11/7. I'll PM you though lol.

I'm having the same problem here in Chicago. Ugh. I just want to eat fall desserts instead.

Spanish and yoga are both on my personal to-do list!

Personally I'm trying to not order netter's anatomy flash cards and try to catch up on mmo life and such haha
A family friend gifted me with a box of Netter's flash cards lol. Definitely tucked them away for now... I'm sure I will be glad to have them next year though 🙂 Now is definitely the time for games!

I was actually thinking about learning sign language.
The coin of the realm in medical school (and residency) is how quickly and correctly you can obtain a Hx.
All languages are valuable. There is no greater language investment for a physician training in the US than Spanish.

my spanish major heart is smiling with joy

would you say that spanish fluency could have a sizeable impact on admissions decisions?

I don't know how to quantify it in admissions, but for the OP (who is already accepted) I can think of nothing that will benefit them more.

I binge watched dexter, house, scrubs, and bones. Also whatever scary movies I could find, but Netflix always seems to be in short supply of good ones. I also spent a lot of time with my family and eating food that I knew I couldn't get anywhere else.

Livin' the good life.

Watch stuff, play video games, travel, read stuff in which you are interested, and don't pre study. Enjoy life. Med school isn't all that horrible, but the little time before it was precious.

Look at all these gunners trying to mess you up before you even begin!

How many months before you get started? 9 or 10? I'd suggest dedicating a month to each of the First Aid USMLEs for the past 10 years.

Start with 2004 for November, 2005 for December and so on. Before you know it you'll be tutoring upperclassmen and you'll easily be in the top 1% when the boards come around.

You'd be way ahead of these guys
