Hi guys,

So just got accepted to the University of Melbourne DVM program for february 2012. I'm a little freaked out by it all.

1) It's so dam far away. (i'm Canadian)

2) It's so dam expensive. (around 200k)

3) I'm 27.

Other then that, totally awesome. What to do... I hear its a great program & city...

Hey, I was just recently accepted to Melbourne as well. I'm having the same feelings...I would love to go, but it's so EXPENSIVE, ughh. It's also hard not knowing if I will get into any of the other schools I applied to 🙄

Congrats on getting in!
I'm about to finish my first year now. 26. Canadian as well. Although, I have been living here for nearly 3 years now.
It definitely is a great program (as I say that I'm knee deep in notes for exams...but totally worth it)
If you can come up with the finances for tuition and living in Melb, which is quite an expensive city, my advice is go for it!

One thing is I KNOW i'm not being accepted for vet anywhere else. I might have some other school options next year that I don't know about yet, but not vet. I guess first thing to do is go to my bank?

My god life transitions are intimidating sometimes (besides the Australia being amazing part and being accepted 😉 )

Depending on how far you are willing to commute (Parkville is a relatively pricey part of the city) I've found a decent 2 bedroom averages between $300-450/week. Having housemates is usually the way to go, as you will have more room to move with 3 or 4 people in a bigger house. Student housing is also an option and saves the trouble of furnishing...etc.
Popular nearby suburbs that most students live in include Carlton, North Melbourne, Brunswick, Kensington, and Flemington. Public transport is fairly decent, but there are no concession fares for international students, unfortunately.
Bare in mind that while the first two years are based in Parkville, we spend about one day a week out at the Werribee campus which is about a 45 minute drive away. A lot of students opt to take the train out there. The last 2 years of the degree are based completely out of Werribee.

I just got accepted to Melbourne for 2014 and I'm also freaking out a bit because of tuition.
I am 21, and a part of me wants to to accept the offer while another part of me wants to wait and reapply in Canada.
I have a good chance of getting an interview in Canada because I am moving to Saskatchewan so I could become a resident of the province. And my grades could get me an interview. ( I didn't get an interview this year because Alberta is one of the most competitive provinces, and based on my grades I ranked 68 out of 160 this year. They only interview 47 applicants. However, if I am a resident of Saskatchewan, I would have ranked 25 out of 70, so I would have gotten an interview at least. The issue is that I can only apply as a resident for the start of 2015 because I need to spend one year in the province before I can be considered a resident ! So I am faced with a situation of where I could take a gamble and move to Saskatchewan and hope to get in for 2015, or just go to Melbourne and be in debt for a long time. Any advice?

Did you confirm this with WCVM? I was informed that you need to move to Sask before the school year starts (end of August) and therefore have lived there for a year prior to matriculation, not the application. Just something to think about. Make sure you ask the school directly.

I turned down an expensive school to reapply in Canada and was very glad I did. The main reason was $$$. 200k vs 40k was worth the year of waiting for me. The loans available for us are also very limited so make sure you know where you're going to get the money from as well. It's hard to turn down a guaranteed acceptance and it's not for everyone, but I would encourage you to take another look at the Canadian schools before racking up that much in debt. 🙂

I really don't like the Dilemma of Saskatoon vs Melbourne, and $ 40,000 vs $200,000.
If you don't mind me asking, how many times did u apply before you got into UCVM ?

So you're applying as a Sask resident for this application cycle coming up then right? For the class of 2018? 👍

2x. I interviewed at both schools last year, but was only waitlisted at WCVM. Re-applied this year and did worse at WCVM in regards to rankings (somehow...) but was accepted at UCVM. The experience of having gone through the MMI was my advantage. It definitely helps to know what it's going to be like so you can better prepare yourself. 🙂

No!! I can only apply as a resident of Sask for the fall of 2015! It's so confusing but to apply as a resident for the following year, one needs to stay for at least a year in the province prior to the application deadline. I can still apply for the fall of 2014 but I wouldn't be considered a resident because I wouldn't have spent 1 year in Sask.
That's another reason why I am tempted to go to Australia. Also, I am a Sask resident, I wouldn't be able to apply to Calgary because they only take Alberta residents.
I hear the MMI's are terrifying and I wished I interviewed there at least.
So right now I am faced with 2 difficult choices:
1) Going to Australia and being in Debt for life.
2) Taking a gamble on Sask and waiting till 2015 to have a good chance of getting an interview.

IMO 21 y/o is young enough to take the gamble and work your butt off for next application cycle. If your first year as a Sask resident doesn't pan out, go back to undergrad for upgrading and apply again. It's quite likely you'll get into a Canadian school by the time you're 25, provided you do what you have to do to improve your application between cycles. Be persistent, stubborn, determined and motivated and you'll save yourself a lot of money.
