WOW! My SDN friends and family (because you practically are!) I am in tears for the first time in years.. I am actually going to be a doctor! WOO-hOO.
Just got back from a camping trip at Mt. Whitney- highest point in the U.S.- with some friends. It was beautiful and all and was distracted during the daytime for the 3 days out in wilderness, but the entire time i was praying and reflecting upon what things I can improve in my app and just generally accepting that this is a test of my faith and my patience. Not expecting anything via e-mail, I waited until late to check. In the list I saw a response from the Dean at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. Expecting it to answer my questions on what I should do to FURTHER help my chances, I went through my emails, casually getting to it. When I read it, and saw that he offered me a seat, I had the slow build up of happiness and finally the pumping of the fists- the sweaty palms and screams came later My mom in FL just got a call now @ 2am, and she had no qualms about answering this one
Not much more I can write now, time to celebrate with some friends before making the 6-hr trek to see my sister in San Jose @ dawn. Here's the email I sent to all on my address book:
Friends:
I am writing to let you know that the long wait has finally come to an end- exactly 11 months after applying to medical school, I've been accepted by the school that has been my top choice throughout-
the Univeristy of Chicago School of Medicine!
Thank you all for your prayers, well wishes and any other way that you have helped me along the way. I love you all! For all those that would like to get in contact with me before I go- I'm still out in the desert of Southern California with Josef. We will not be completing the road trip back, The car will stay with my sister in San Fran as a wedding gift and we'll fly back this Saturday. I then leave on June 20- I'll be in Spain for a month doing a volunteer project through Volunteers for Peace [vfp.org] and then coming back to relax for the month of August and get ready for life in the windy city for the next four years.
After being unexpectedly rejected from USF and then UF after being on the waitlist, I was doubtful that I'd get into one of the top 20 med schools in the nation. Just goes to show that patience and prayer pay off and that dreams really DO come true. Have a great summer, all!
