Yea just say that, tactfully and concisely. You can add fancy phrases like “I struggled to balance my emotional well-being and my academic life, while also providing support for loved ones during that difficult time” and “while there is no excuse for sub-par grades, I did not feel that semester represented my best work.”

Most normal humans will understand.
