I wonder if it constantly feels like you are working on a sinking ship if you reside at the NBOME?

Do we go back to emailing Illinois and Pennsylvania senators/other politicians as well as California now, considering the recent desire by the NBOME for a temporary testing center? If not lobbying to our states' political officials and osteopathic student governing bodies, is there any kind of legal action we can take against the NBOME as medical students for unfairly requiring this exam at some point even amidst the pandemic, despite NBME's actions to waive it. It seems unconstitutional from a licensing standpoint, reminds me of when the AOA got hammered for their monthly $$$ membership requirements to their organization in order to maintain licensure as a DO physician. Thankfully the membership was ruled unconstitutional and no longer required.

Their apps wont be similar b/c it will have JHU, Columbia, Stanford, Penn, NYU, and many top MD programs on it. LOL
OP literally said if their apps were similar. Implying they are probably not coming from top MD school. Glad a first-year MD student came all the way to our PE DO thread to point that out though. Good job. Would have been a shame if someone didn't understand this.

User name checks out.

If you look at the NBOME website, they post the safety protocols for the PE on their website so they are definitely starting back November 2nd. I actually had a date in November but pushed it back to April because I can’t stand these greedy mother****ers. We should start a petition to boycott the PE and go on strike so the NBOME goes bankrupt. If we all cancel then they can’t make any money and Gimpel won’t make 600k a year. It’s amazing how much money Gimpel makes off the PE. It is borderline criminal.

Gimpbell you are a criminal

Gimpbell should step down immediately. The active number of COVID-19 cases is the highest its ever been and appears to be making an upward trend. Illinois has the 5th highest total number of cases,Pensylvania has the 11th total number of cases as of today. Dr. Gimpbell, with this data and medical recommendations, including those reported by the CDC, how can you confidently say that this test is one of the most important tests for our education in the midst of a pandemic. If you can not step back and look at the bigger picture for the sake of others lives and health please step down. You cannot truly call yourself an academic physician, if you are breaking from the recommendations by the CDC and many other organizations.

By the way, that new temporary site Dr. Gimpel and the NBOME want to open is in California. (state with the highest total number of active cases). They said they were doing this to accommodate the new safety and regional concerns for level 2-PE testing.

Maybe if the students show up wearing FIGS they might care?

I had May 3rd scheduled. LECOM told us if we don't take it by March 31st, we won't be able to graduate on time, no exceptions. So now I'm scheduled for November 23rd.
what's their reasoning?

So how many classmates of yours aren’t gonna graduate/match because of this? This is criminal

They've told everyone to cancel any dates after March 31st and to sign up as soon as NBOME opens up new dates in November. Of course LECOM is convinced that dates are going to open up once the new testing center in Fresno opens up.

Does anyone know if there's a way to look at available PE dates without relinquishing your date? With things being so crazy I'm afraid to release it even for a few minutes.

On the home page once you login to the NBOME site... on the righthand side underneath "Exam Eligibility for (your name)"

Overheard a PD today saying if it came down to 2 applicants, she would choose the one with the PE pass over no PE or failed PE. Yikes.

LECOM says passing PE is a graduation requirement and they won't budge on the matter unless PE gets cancelled for the 2020-2021 season
So they're encouraging their students to break ghe law if they go to Chicago or to violate public health recommendations if they go to Conshohocken? Really good look for a medical school... The approach DO schools and the NBOME are taking to a public health crisis should be national news due to the sheer hypocrisy

I mean yeah everyone would all things being equal, however, given the current situation and how its deteriorating and how CS isn't going to restart I believe it'll all come out in the wash. I don't believe for a SECOND when NBOME says 25% of students have already taken it. Maybe if they were all military match and different situations but for the average applicant I know noone that has taken it.

The whole country is hitting a second wave and sending us to do this exam to hotspots and then having us go back into the community seems about as good of an idea as the Sturgis rally was

Sucks but it’s hard to blame them. I’m sure they don’t want to worry about us having to take time off during intern year. The good news is there are so many of us without PE (and MD students without CS) that they’ll be unable to throw us out just for that alone.

Yeah you can’t blame them, assuming the two applicants are otherwise equal...

This is all on the NBOME. Their actions are disadvantaging DO students, and ultimately, potentially altering future careers. All to line their already stuffed pockets. Safety concerns aside, they really just don’t give a damn about us students.

I think the onus is all on us at this point. Be up front with program directors. If you’re scheduled for February, March, or April, for instance, make sure that that is known by the PDs. Make it clear that you will have passed well before residency starts up. If you’re scheduled for May or later, then Godspeed.

I thought this was true as well, but if you take a gander at the reddit specialty-specific google docs, you'll find like >50% have a PE pass. Granted, I'm sure those things are self-selected to be the gunners who fill them out, but still. Making my decision to push back into April seem sketchier by the minute lol

And that’s just on reddit, which doesn’t encompass all of medical education anyway. It’s a super small sample size. I’m in January for now...

I just don’t see the logistics of starting back up in 2 weeks when the spike is actively increasing haha it’s such a blantant money grab and everyone sees it but the NBOME themselves

umm i thought they weren't going to financially penalize anyone for cancelling late this year. otherwise they would be creating an incentive for people to show up and test who are symptomatic.

What PD just goes around saying stuff like this in such a way that it is casually “overheard”? The PDs I have interacted with thus far have either hated the test and claim not to care, or don’t even know what the test is.

yeah, of course. No risk with the applicant whose already passed the test

What happens if you take the PE before match but results come back after match? Would I have to update programs if I failed or can I just quietly retake bc it is not required for graduation?

Not worth it.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Mayor Lori Lightfoot announced a curfew on businesses in Chicago to go into effect on Friday due to a sharp rise in COVID-19 cases in the city.

Mayor Lightfoot said the curfew will be in effect for the next two weeks. As part of the curfew, all non-essential businesses will be closed from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

The announcement comes as Mayor Lightfoot said the average number of cases has risen over the past week more than 50% to 640 cases a day.

"The increase is startling, it is really quite breathtaking," Mayor Lightfoot said. "Think about where we were just two weeks ago or even at the beginning of October and where we are now, it's like we are back in the spring. So folks, we have got to do what works: social distancing, wearing masks, washing your hands and limiting your contact."

Mayor Lightfoot said all Chicagoans should refrain from gatherings of more than six people or any social gatherings after 10 p.m.

Chicago Department of Public Health Commissioner Dr. Allison Arwady said large and small gatherings are "posing significant health risks."

"There is a 30% chance that someone in a group of 25 people has COVID-19. There is a 50% chance that someone in a group of 50 has COVID-19. Even getting together 10 people in Chicago, there is a 14% chance that someone has COVID-19."

I mean the mayor is easily accessible. Let's shut this thing down.

While I don't support students breaking quarantine to take the PE, the real blame is on the NBOME. If they truly cared about local health guidelines then they would audit every student taking the PE and cancel their date if they are coming from a travel banned state or won't be quarantined .The NBOME are wreckless, manipulative, and greedy. They are an embarrassment. We need to keep up the pressure on the NBOME and not turn on each other. I would hate to see any student fined because they were pressured into taking the PE.

Look, man, the NBOME sent us a stern and self-aggrandizing message recently saying not to look at their actual actions while judging them and that we should just take them at their own biased word that they are good people looking out for students. They want what's best for us and that just happens to be making them rich and ****ing us in the match this year.

It's legitimately like listening to someone talk about how they are physically beating you for your own good. The gaslighting is truly world class.

I plan on maintaining AOA membership and pursuing osteopathic boards in my specialty for the sole purpose of being able to have a voice in dismantling this corrupt organization. More DO students need to keep their affiliations so that one day WE can be the one's to finally get rid of the NBOME and make the profession truly greater for the generations behind us.

"Your match, Your choice"...ok well that's just a statement someone makes when they don't want to get sued. But to continue administering it and still make it a requirement for the current graduating class forces schools to worry about how they will prepare these candidates and most importantly have their image reflected with the ideal passing percentiles. This is what I call checkmate and diplomacy all at the same time, something not far from the reaches of what many DO schools employ.

From Frequently Asked Questions on NBOME WEBSITE:

Will NBOME remove passing COMLEX-USA Level 2-PE from the eligibility requirement for COMLEX-USA Level 3?
At this point, that action is not necessary. Testing availability in the remainder of 2021 and 2022 should be more than ample to serve the needs and provide flexibility for all members of the Classes of 2021 and 2022 to test with more than enough time to gain eligibility to take COMLEX-USA Level 3 by the end of their first year in residency or the first half of their second year, which is recommended timing for these examinations.

Should Level 2-PE testing availability be delayed well beyond July 2021, the NBOME will consider providing out-of-sequence availability for taking Level 3 prior to taking Level 2-PE, but in either case, both examinations are anticipated to be required to complete the COMLEX-USA series for unrestricted medical licensure in any of the United States, territories, or D.C.

He has no problem testing us during residency...
Can't wait until someone who has completed 6 months of intern year on the wards with no issues goes to take this fake outpatient exam and fails. Imagine trying to justify the validity of an exam that already had no validity and then that happens! It's completely indefensible.

It's honestly in the NBOME's best interest to waive the exam for this class if they want the test to have the illusion of 1% of credibility it currently has to justify its whole existence. I want the whole thing to burn (literally) but the NBOME is penny wise and pound foolish if they don't waive it out of greed.

That means you know exactly what these mouth breathing *****s are going to do lol.

It is truly mind blowing how stubborn these "people" are.

The first bolded statement: ok they are at least acknowledging the right answer as a possibility.

Second: wow they have no idea when most people take the exam except for FM/IM peeps.

Third: ah yeah here is the bat**** take. I was wondering when it was going to pop up.

Imagine truly and genuinely thinking the PE exam matters AFTER matching and being a real doctor but saying since its inception that the test is required to make sure you are competent to become a doctor in the first place. Just really think about that. Holy ****. That's politics in America 2020 levels of insane.
