hey willcott,
If you don't mind, what were your stats like? i totally understand if you don't wanna share that info.
and one more question, why aren't you taking the MCATs? Is taking the DAT as good as the MCATs? and do you have to have the prereqs done by the time you apply? I actually spoke with the dean and she stated that they sorta preferred the MCATs over any other tests. i was just currious of what you have heard. thanks and good luck on your interview.
Hi ucrs,
My overall undergrad gpa is 3.65 and my science gpa is 3.36. I have a BA in English Lit with minors in chemistry and sociology. A little over 10 years ago, I attended college as an immature hedonist; subsequently my gpa was around 1.8 for 60 credits (which took me about 3.5 years to amass). I quit to join the Army. My grades following my enlistment were much improved to say the least and I think it is for this reason that the admission folks have so far looked past my earlier grades. Besides that, my early foray into college included little science and many 100 level sociology and bowling classes, so any indication of my science aptitude must necessarily come from the recent past.
I have decided to take the DAT in lieu of the MCAT for multiple reasons. For one, I can take it just about any day of the year, so I would be able to start school a year earlier than I might otherwise. With work, a full-time course load, a wedding, and a honeymoon baby, any attempts to accomplish a standardized test would have been junior varsity, at best. When I spoke with the Dean of Admissions, she asked why I had not taken the MCAT. I responded with the reasons above, but the fact that the question came up indicates to me a preference over the DAT. But, if the DAT is acceptable for admission to OCPM, then this is all I'm really concerned about. If the availability of scholarship money were to depend on posting an MCAT score, then I may consider taking it. Otherwise, I'm just happy to avoid preparing for an arduous, butt-dragging test while dodging various liquid/solid projectile from our new little man.
To answer your question about the completion of pre-requisites before application, I have to say that I'm not sure because I completed them this past summer.
I hope this post has been helpful, hopefully half as helpful as all of the information I've taken from the other members of this forum. Information and encouragement are the reasons SDN is so great, so thanks for the kind wishes and keep the dialogue going. Take care.
