hi folks,

i am a FTD (on H4) and preparing for part1.although i am preparing for it but i am still in dilemma as in whether its worth it or not.i mean even after scoring above 90,people are slogging to get into the D school.once u get in,those two years of studies.after finishing u have a huge amount of loan to be paid off plus loan for the clinic, eqipments and obvisiously a house(which i would be sharing with my husband).would i be really enjoying life with all that????
is it better to go for MS(in oral biology or something like that) and make it simpler?
i am sure there must be many who went through this stage and thought about all this(i have specifed H4 coz there are lot many things to be taken care of after getting married).
in short, lets compare the advantages of doing DDS over MS(in non clinical subjects).

thanks for ur time.

Advantages of doing DDS:
1) you can practice in any state
2) easy to get into masters
3) easy to get a job after DDS
4) probably you might get little more salary than some one who got license in non-traditional way
5) You can have the pride of having American degree ( is this worth?)

Disadvantages:
1) Huge debt, it might take 3-5 years even if you decide to pay the lender every cent you earned during this period. Lot of people chose to repay over 20 years.
2) you are already a dentist, so it is not giving you any additional qualification ( technically)
What are the other ways to obtain license?:
1) Minnesota is the only state at the moment. But they are making it tougher by introducing hurdles like ICA evaluation. This ICA doesn’t have a website, email. The only way to communicate is phone. I have heard they are taking more than 1 year to evaluate your credentials.
2) Masters: This is not easy especially for more popular specialties like endo, ortho, OMFS. It might be relatively easier to get into Perio or prostho.
With your advanced education in a specialty you might be eligible for license in these following states after taking regional licensing exam with the board permission ( as of today, things might change!) . You do not need to have green card or citizenship to get the license
( except NY. This requirement may be waived if you agree to work in rural areas). But some states do need SSN, which you can get it if you are on F1 and do some campus jobs.
If you practice for 5 years in any state, you can get license in most of the other states ( licensure by credentials).. Still some states need DDS/DMD from accredited US/Canada schools even if you practice 5 years in another state.

Arizona
Connecticut
Georgia
Illinois
Louisiana( you will be restricted to your specialty)
Maryland ( only pedo)
Mississippi.
Oregon ( you will be restricted to your specialty)
Tennessee
Texas.
Virginia.
Washington

3) faculty position

I am not sure oral biology is a ADA recognized dental specialty ( same problem with MS in orofacial pain too). So you will not get license with this. Acceptable specialties are: endodontics,
periodontics, oral and maxillofacial pathology, oral and maxillofacial surgery, oral and maxillofacial
radiology, orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics, pediatric dentistry, dental public health, or
prosthodontics.
I am wondering why you are choosing MS oral biology. The only use with this I can see is
1) to get into US ( you are already here)
2) it might increase the chances of getting into other specialties later
3) to get a faculty position.
4) may improve chances to get into DDS

i have not chosen MS oral biology.i am just giving an example of a non-clinical
field coz again,getting into endodontics,
periodontics, oral and maxillofacial pathology, oral and maxillofacial surgery, oral and maxillofacial
radiology, orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics, pediatric dentistry requires great part1 scores, good gpa(as far as i know).
i just want to know that would doing MS in non clinical field after giving GRE would be a good option?obviously this would not allow me to continue with dentistry.
there are many people on the forum who are doing/done with MS.i would appreciate if they could help.is it a good decision to go for MS in subjects not related to dentistry?

Hello everybody

I am international dentist who is new to the States ...and I am working as a dental assistant In Florida now ..i have started studing for the NDBE I.

The only way i knew to have a licsens to practice dentistry is advanced standing program. But it's very intersting to hear about this MS way. I would like to know if i got high score in NDBE I ..what is my chance to be involved in such program (i also have a green card ). and what college could accept me ?

pardon my ignorance.....but any information about getting liscense through MS would be really appreciated.
