Hi everyone!

I had a quick question for the board. I was originally planning on pursuing a career in radiology but just recently decided to switch and am planning on applying to internal medicine this fall. Because I wasn't planning on applying to internal medicine, I currently have my medicine sub I scheduled for March.

I was wondering if doing my medicine sub I so late in the year would prevent me from matching at the top tier programs? I honored my internal medicine rotation during my 3rd year and I was able to get two letters from that rotation so I don't need to do a sub I specifically to get letters. However, I wasn't sure if some programs require letters from a 4th year sub I.

Some other facts: step 1 was a 250, I have step 2 scheduled for either October or November (I haven't set it in stone yet). My first and second year grades were above average but not honors. In my third year, I honored everything except for high pass in neurology and family medicine. I am not AOA and my medical school is middle tier. I have a three abstracts (one 1st author) in radiology and poster presentations from those 3 abstracts at national conferences.

I appreciate all the advice!

You app is pretty damn solid, I'm not sure how much not having a Sub--I will matter since you already honored medicine 3rd year. I think it would serve you better by finding an away rotation at a powerhouse in some sub-speciality and getting a solid letter.

Someone w/ more experience should probably comment on this, but when I was applying I was told to do at least 1 Sub-I before the application season so you can really show your ability to function as an intern. Sub-I is really very different from third year med school.
At the same time, I'm sure a subspecialty IM letter would help a lot too. I would definitely do something medicine-releated before the application year.

Thanks for all the advice! I also talked to the internal medicine clerkship director at my medical school and was told that for the most part, the programs don't care when you do your sub I. I'm going to stick with my sub I scheduled for March.

Thanks again!

Youre going to have zero motivation to show up every morning after march 15
