So I have a fashion related question that I was hoping you guys could help me with. I recently bought a grey suit skirt to wear to interviews and I am not sure what color shoes I should wear. Black? Dark brown? I wonder if black will be too dark given it is a light grey.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

it depends on what shirt you plan on wearing and your jacket. Rules they are a changin'- you don't necessarily need to match your shoes to the purse. My suggestion- take the suit shoe shopping. But, whatever you do- DON"T DO BROWN w/ LIGHT GREY!!!! That would be bad. I'll keep my eyes open and PM you shoes if I see some shoes during my e-shopping escapades that would work. Good Luck! :luck:

Nice jacket!!

I would probably go with black, but I am in no way a fashion expert so don't listen to what I say.

This is embarrassing, but I saw a little of Martha Stewart's Apprentice show on Thursday night and she had on a similar suit as yours and I thought it looked really really sharp. She had a on a black shirt underneath. I cannot remember what color shoes.

Thanks for your responses!

I was wondering if brown with grey might be a no-no. I kind of envisioned a dark cranberry colored shell underneath the jacket and then was thinking maybe a maroon-brown shoe if you know what I mean. It would be hard to do unless I wore the suit out shopping and tried it on, like you said.

I'm sure I will figure something out. The whole trick is to find shoes in the right color that are actually comfortable!

Or you could try a silvery-gray texture shoe, like alligator or crocodile skin (note, it does not and probably should not have to be the real thing as you will tear your shoes up on the interview trail) but you can get away with more color variation if it is a 'skin' shoe.

Ooh, thanks. That's a good idea pingu.

over 50. that's all i'm saying. 😀

Okay, so I went to DSW to look for shoes. I even found a nice looking pair of grey pumps, however of course they were not available in my size (6.5).
However I did not waste a trip to the shoe store as I found a pair of clearance kangaroos that I most certainly cannot wear to interviews. I justified my purchase by saying I had spent enough $ on gas that I should not come home empty handed 😀

Here they are. Cute and practical (what with the little pocket to carry stuff and all)!

You had to do this to me. 😡

I somewhat recently found myself a grey pantsuit a few shades darker than Emaline's and have worn it with a black shoe/bag combo.

Your response made me consider a new shoe purchase, but I'm thinking that might be almost too grey (unlike Emaline's which would work since it is a skirt suit).

Definitely not brown!

Or you can buy shoes you like and THEN find a outfit to match. There is never a wrong reason to buy shoes 😀

I have been doing internet shopping for my interview suit. There is this fine Michael Kors black pantsuit I am lusting after. The only problem? It is $400!

OK, off to check overstock.com now!

Are you sure you are not thinking of underoos?

Black shoes would be good, just be sure to wear 1-2 other black things (earrings, watch, etc) so that they tie in. You could do a cranberry shirt and cranberry trouser socks with that. If you were Pingu, I'd imagine that you would buy yourself onyx jewelery to wear as an accessory.

I got my suit at the mall for $125. It isn't anything fabulous, just your basic black pantsuit. I didn't want to spend any more money or time on it.

oooh, yes... an excuse to buy jewelry! I was just joking with my husband the other day that I needed to purchase some interview "bling." 😀

Yes there is. "Sheer unrelenting pain" 😛

If I lived in Dallas, maybe. But right now I'm hoping the weather will get cold enough so I can try out my sharp little Pasha & Jo herringbone coat (Just $100 😉 )

I already have the boots. Montréal.

That works too. One never wants to look too rich for the job 😉

Since this seems to be the official fashion consult thread, I have a question. Is it OK to wear Peeptoe pumps for an interview? I just bought the cutest black peeptoe pumps w/ snake skin pattern. These are the pants

http://www.jcrew.com/catalog/product.jhtml?id=prod70428691&catId=cat74838

I bought the matching Black Crepe Wool Jacket. Sorry can't find a link to the shoes. Will it fly, or are peeptoes too risky?

I think, the fact that you're even asking gives you the answer... 😉

I was concerned for various reasons (the predominant one being that I look young) that interviewers might not take me seriously. So I played very very safe. Not drab, just safe.

 I remember those, too! I never wore them, of course; I was strictly a FOTL boy.

I think I got that from yaah, actually!

I'm still sweating it out, too. At least I'll have a month of dermatopathology to distract me starting in October!

Now I am by no means a fashion expert (as I can't even figure out what shoes to wear with my suit), but I think maybe I would shy away from the peeptoes just to be on the conservative side. I also would worry about it raining or something and then stepping in a puddle and having soaked toes for the interview (something they would probably never notice, but would bother me).

Wow!! That's nice! I haven't even thought about an a nice coat yet.
For those interviewing in colder climes - a coat that falls below the knee is not necessarily a wise idea. Especially not for air travel.

I have more gray hairs everyday. I'm serious. 🙁

It runs in my family. I'm 27 now and bet I'm totally gray by about 35.

Won't there be a tour given in which peep toes could be frowned upon?

Peep toe or open toed shoes are a no-no for interviews. Once you are a resident, though, you can wear them. So think of interviews as another annoying fashion mistake we are forced to make by The Man. 😡

And if you are thinking about changing your hair style or color do it a little while in advance of your interviews. You don't want to be stuck with a crazy color or too short bangs.

The only problem is that you're stuck with said crazy colour or too short bangs, on your ERAS photo 😀

My ERAS photo was airbrushed. I didn't ask for it, the photographer just sat down at the computer and started doing it. So when any of my interviewers said I had a nice picture, I confessed to the airbrushing. I just didn't feel right taking credit for the 'enhanced' picture.

We believe you 😀

My ERAS photo was (to put it mildly) hideous. It is probably responsible for rejecting me from half a dozen programs, but all's well that end's well - I like it where I am!

In contrast, my hospital ID is so cute that I'm thinking of going to Parking Services and asking them how I can get a copy of the picture file.

anyone have any ideas about what kind of shoes to wear. I mean i love buying shoes and have like 55 pairs but i don't have a formal pair that is also comfortable and i really don't want my feet to be killing me cause that just makes me miserable and that's not the impression i'm going for
so anyone have any suggestions as to a gd comfortable brand of shoes with at least 2" heel that is stylish and comfortable

Interview shoes suck, but I would suggest a pump (2 inch heel) or slingback (2 inch heel). No open toe, peep toe, sandal, or heel higher then 2 inches. I would even say no to a flat because a flat with a suit just doesn't look right to me. You are going to have to walk in them, so make sure they are semi comfortable. As for color, go with the general theme of your suit, which means you are doing a brown, gray, or black. The one way I dressed it up was with a alligator skin, which looks better than just a regular leather and won't scuff. You will scuff your shoes and your shoes will break. On one of my interviews the stitching of the leather gave way and I had an interview the next day so I had to rush out and buy a new pair. Also, try not to look like you are wearing your grandma's shoes.

In conclusion, professional (ick) yet stylish, not over 2 inches but not flat and always have a backup

No matter what shoes you get, make sure you break those suckers in. There is a ridiculous amount of walking on these interviews, some of which is completely pointless (crisscrossing buildings for interviews) So be prepared.

I got my suit today! It is gorgeous, a dark charcoal gray pantsuit. I can't wait to wear it!!!

Where do you ladies keep your cellphones while on the job?

I mean, I know the guys generally keep them clipped on their waists. If I tried to do this, and carry the service pager, my pants would surely fall down.

My cellphone doesn't even work in the hospital so I don't even bother. Does yours?
Depends on where I am. Doesn't work in the sub-sub-basement for instance. But it tends to be handy when walking from the med school to the hospital where there's quite a distance between two phones, and the pages start piling up.

Also handy when walking over to the students' union for lunch 🙂
