Age

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
i have lots of friends who are in their late 20's and even 30's who have just started pharm school. age doesn't really matter. at the interview, they don't even judge you by your age, nor even ask about it. i'm 24 and still going for the field. your Masters/BS will definitely show the adcom your academic maturity.

I don't think that you will feel out of place. There will be plenty of people that are the same age or older than you. Whats a few years younger anyway? Most students are between 21-28. The ages are also increasing because more students are entering pharmacy school with bachelors degrees these days due to increased competitiveness in the application process.

Keep in mind that if you are not currently in a relationship, being toward the middle of the age distribution you will allow you to be within a 5 year radius of most students you would wanna get with.

I am 27 and just finishing up my Masters this semester and starting PharmD this fall. I was considering PhD at some point as well (many many years ago), but after I realized that there practically no jobs for PhD's out there, I totally scrapped that idea. If you really want to get a PhD, you can go PharmD/PhD route and some schools offer that. After all, do you care about who "sits nex to you in class" or about the degree and your future job opportunities?

25 is young. I just started and I'm 26. I guess it does feel a little weird sitting next to a bunch of 19 and 20 year olds, but we do have some older folks as well in their 30s and 40s.

You are definitely not too old. geezz... I am 27 and will become 28 when I start. If I don't get into 3 year program, I will be 31 when I graduate. But I am Asian, so I look younger (maybe)🙂.. I hope I won't be surround by all kids in the early 20s in my class..hehe.. Education can never be a waste of time. I spent almost 2 year in music school and 4 year getting BA in Chinese language. I didn't make any money out of it but I have lots of Chinese friends and enjoys watching Chinese movie and novels and appreciate music. Somehow you can use what you learned in life and doesn't have to make money out of it...

I'm 20 and I'm starting in the fall, so I'm on the other end, I will be a really young one in the class, which I think will be wierd too. I think there is a good mix in Pharmacy school and that people go there at all ages.

The age difference isn't noticeable while sitting in lecture but it is definitely apparent when interacting with the 20 and 21 year olds. You can communicate, there's just a very different set of expectations. You'll find your niche and be fine.

I wouldn't worry about being 25- that's actually pretty much average. The average age for freshman students at many of the schools is around 27.
I'm going to be 27 this summer and am starting school in this fall. I got a bachelors degree and a Masters degree before applying to pharmacy school. I think my Masters actually made me a more competitive applicant. Go for it if you think it's the right career for you!

LOL I am 31 and just started with pre-reqs (I have a BS in Mass Comm and so...no math or sciences on my transcript)...I figure it will take me 2-3 years to finish pre-reqs going part time, and then IF I get into pharm school...I won't be actually working in it until I am dang near 40!

Well I beat all y'all! I am 40 and hoping for acceptance for Fall '08. The school I go to is not much of a commuter school and, therefore, is mostly populated by young people. So I feel very much out of place but don't really care. I'm there to get an education not make friends; although I wish some of the "kids" would just be themselves around me. Just because I'm "old" doesn't mean I can't be fun. So listen up kiddos, invite me to some of your parties and I'll show you how it's done by a real pro!

27 here. My fiancee tells me I act like I'm in my 60s though (he's 38, so I don't know what his problem is). I always feel more connected with the students in my class who are in their 30's and 40's, but I'm pretty sure that I look young still--at least I hope so! I'm still carded when I buy liquor myself (thank god), but not when I'm with my fiancee--so he's making me look older!!! (and then he has the nerve to tell me I act like an old lady!).

I'm so old, i think i lost my mojo.

The key to staying young is to not act your age, but that doesn't mean women over 40 should be wearing tube tops......

I'm 27, and I will be starting this Fall 2008. I know a lot of people starting around my age or older actually.

I'm currently a Master's student and considering either a Phd or (as of very recently) a PharmD. I would be 25 when starting either which isn't too bad for a PhD but I have a feeling that in Pharm school I would be sitting next to all people aged 20-22, or younger. I feel like if I go to Pharm, completing a Master's and BS would have been a waste since I didn't really need them. What do you guys think?

The average age of my P1 class at the beginning of the year is 24.6

Don't worry, I go to school fully clothed! Although, I know of a few MILF lovers who would die to see me in a tube top 😕 (ugghh). What's up with that?

I believe that us older folk will be better off than the teenie boppers because you will appear more mature/professional at your job interviews 4 years down the line.......so you will have a better chance of landing a job position if it comes between you (30-34 yr old) and a 23-24 yr old. I think a pharmacist that young would look silly and would get very little respect. Also, they have just entered the world of partying and bar going....which might affect their school performance. Hopefully this means that you (as a older person) can out do them academically. You also have many life experiences that will make you wiser than these kids that aren't quite off their mother's teet yet.

Young pharmacists would look silly? Get little respect? If you are saying it to make the author of this thread feel better, then OK, but do you really believe it???

People who've completed their B.S. degrees are "not just entering the world of partying" - they ve been at this world for at least 4 years now. And "these kids" maintained good GPAs while working, volunteering, doing research, and partying --- so GOOD LUCK outdoing them academically.

Again, are you serious???

Ouch!!! A little harsh, don't you think? Not to start a feud but do you truly believe that you'll have a better chance at getting the job as an older person? Do you know that some places do not give starting positions to older individuals because they become a liability? (This is not my opinion!) The liabilities include higher medical insurance costs and the possibility of an earlier retirement. Early retirement means starting the hiring process again. The only reason I know this is because my father retired from the military and then received his bachelor's all in his 40s. When he looked for a job, they wouldn't hire him because of his age. They wanted the "kids"! By the way, I'm 22 so I'll be about 26 or 27 by the time I have a PharmD but I'll have a BS in May.

Was that the reason they gave him, because of his age?

That would be discrimination...

That's just the impression he got from them. He wanted a job as a paralegal in a lawyer's office so I highly doubt that they told him he was too old because of lawsuits. Although I wasn't there, I believe what my father says. I think they may have asked him age-related questions during the interview about retirement plans and insurance. I think they also gave him the impression that they would benefit more by training someone at a younger age versus someone older because the younger one could work at the company for more years. Like I said, I wasn't there and even if it had nothing to do with age, this happens all over the country in many jobs. They won't directly tell you its your age but it does happen.

I'm 21 now and I am now put on the waitlist for both Purdue and Maryland.
I hope I can get my Pharm. D. and MBA/MPH by the end of 26.

Those of us with 10+ years of work experience may have an edge over somebody who went straight through school and might have never worked. On the other hand, a younger person who can handle the school commitment for so long deserves respect.

at toledo, a lot of people are between entering their 1st year of pharmacy school ( just 2 years of prereqs) 20-24ish.

i'd say 50% are 20-21

I'm finishing up this May and I'm 28, I had received my bachelors 2 years prior to starting. Most of my class was in their mid to late 20's when I started and a good half had at least a bachelors degree. Our class was definitely older then those before and after us- the kiddos (18-21) were the ones in the minority.

Yes, I am serious. A 23-24 yr old pharmacist would look silly. I am NOT saying that they don't deserve respect. In the real world they would receive less respect than their elder pharmacists from customers, doctors, and employees. You can deny if you wish...but that is the way the world works. Employers do discriminate (not out right) against age......young and old. You may also be living in a fairy tale world where they don't discriminate against sex either.....well I got news for you, they do. An employer would much rather hire a male than a female with comparable stats because they won't have to worry about a guy going on maternity leave....its true.

Also, not all kids have BS's....especially not the 19-21 yr olds that I have been referring to. When some of these peeps get to the legal drinking age they may spend to much time away from their studies enjoying the 21 and up life. Also, a good portion of them don't work so that they can get the grades and because they are spoiled by mommy and daddy. They will not have the work experience that an older candidate would have. I am NOT trying to say ALL kids in this age group are spoiled, non-working, teet-suckling, alcoholics to be. So if you are a teenie bopper and offended by what I wrote...don't be mad. Just know that you have some older folks that mean business to compete with.

I'm 24 and will turn 25 before I start in the fall! I think you should do some more research before you decided on PharmD because clearly you haven't done much at all!

P.S. I heart MILFs:meanie:

also, i agree with Labrat, and not just because we're buddies. I worked in a retail pharmacy where one of our pharmacists was barely 25 and older customers always asked if they could speak to someone with more experience (sometimes they even confused her for a tech...). If you don't think that younger employees, in any field of work, get payed/respected less... then you probably never worked in your 20's!

I'm so freakin underpayed right now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!😡

How are you underpaid? It says you are a pharmacy student.... so you can be an intern... meaning 10+ an hour.

Actually, I'm starting my pharmacy education this fall!

I currently work for a leading anti-sense technology company doing pharmacokinetics research and I get paid 26 dollars per hour, which may seem pretty good... except if you want to raise a family, buy a house and/or a nice car! Hence, I'm going to pharmacy school!

I'm applying for 2009 entry, and will be 36 if I get in. I obtained my Ph.D. in 2000 and have been working in research ever since. If an old timer with a background like me isn't worrying about this, then neither should you 😀

I have to back up Ab. Et on this .. same deal we had a midtwenties pharmacist, babyfaced, got little respect from the techs, and also very little faith from customers both young and old ... i'm not saying it's right I mean this guy earned his right to be a pharmacist but thats just how it was

this post makes me feel better...i've scattered around every profession after getting by B.S. and finally decided on pharmacy..i'll be 25 almost 26 when i start( hopefully...🙄)..but i feel real secure about being a pharmacist. i'll be in school for a few more years but there's pros and cons to everything...🙂

Im young... but I feel old... does that count?

When I'm a 24-25 yr old pharmacist some day... I think I'll grow a beard... that might help...

I currently USE anti-sense technology in my research and I make only 18!

Anyways, I'm 31 and they seemed to like the fact that I have been doing pharmacology research for 10 years. I mean, I actually feel much more ready to get the pharmD now than when I was in my early 20's.

I'll be 24 when I start.. 28 when I finish. 24-25 years seems to be the average age of P1's at most pharmacy schools.

Sounds cool.....has to do with DNA/RNA stuff....right?

yeah, i'll be 22 when I start this Fall but when I was at the interview.... I felt like I was one of the youngest there.... some of them already married w/ kids

Not a bad idea.

This thread is great- just has everything in it, a whole bouquet of fun things. 🙂 Conversation goes anywhere from teeny boops/pharmacists not being respected to hot MILFs wearing tube tops. Absolute Ethanol and Labratty I love reading all the threads you two post in.👍

The Question I am concerned with is : Do Hot Pharmacists get respected at all ? I always get treated like I am a ****** everywhere I go especially when I have my hair and make up done and am wearing pink. I swear when I tell people I work in the research lab and am two months away from a biochemistry degree they have the most amazed look on their face.

Bring It On, Grandma/Grandpa!!!😛

My answer is : "Do not have time to do that: I have a Biochemistry Degree to complete".
