Alabama Schools Thread Part 2!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I know this is a little far removed for some of you but I was wondering how you were supposed to submit your LORs with your secondaries. I have heard that some schools supply you with a envolope that they want teachers to submit the LOR in. I was just wondering how UAB wanted LORs to be submitted I wasn't sure if they had an agreement with interfolio.

I sent mine via Interfolio!!!

UASOM kids:

Do you have any Fin. Aid info yet on Blazer? Mine says I've sent in all the form and am good to go, but no award.

Anyone else have an award?

Also--are you guys cracking on this pre-matric list at all?

For me, that would be "no" and "no", which basically speaks to my lazy-assness over the past two months. I took a look at the immunizations stuff and that sort of stopped me in my tracks. I mean, my parents were fairly responsible and all and I never developed whooping cough in the day so I am assuming I got my shots. As for turning up the paper proof, ha! Who knows what dusty trashbin that info is residing in. And since I am (ahem) a little older than my future classmates, it was been a little while since I had to look for that stuff. 😱

See, JD, this is why we need to be pals. You need to keep me in line!

For those of you who attended this past weekend's event.... any info or stories to share?

Everything has been revamped to an organ based system that promotes research and academic medicine. It seems like it's a great time to be a first year. They seem very willing to support all academic intrest to ensure you success( which equals their success)

Mine reads "Interview Complete-Remain Under Consideration" Bummer. I hope this helps. I asked this earlier in this thread but I am going to ask you. On your 2nd app menu page does it say "Pay your deposit online.'?

Yeah, I have that option. I don't think it means anything though. Maybe if we both pay our deposits and a little extra, they'll let us in.

I'll sell whatever is left of my soul ...

Does anyone have the slightest clue as to how many people are on the waitlist?

I havent heard anything about scholarships for UAB. I filled out all my information about a month ago, got accepted in November, 33 MCAT, 3.85 gpa. I wasn't expecting a scholarship but that sure would be nice.

I'm also looking for some room mates. Any one interested? I was thinking about buying a small house but I doubt I'll have the credit so just have to keep throwing away rent money... It will be nice to finally have a stable income.

i think there are 60 on the waitlist total

Be careful about that immunization stuff, they're pretty serious about it. I was pretty lackadaisical about it myself, and found myself scrambling the week before orientation to get tb tests read and very old and illegible records faxed. You don't want to wake up one morning and realized that you can't get your 2-step done by matriculation because the weekend doesn't match up well or some mess.

Well, thanks for the advice Matt. Looks like the vampires will bleed me for proof of AB titers today.

:horns:

Does anyone know how likely it is for a candidate on the upper third to get accepted? Also, do they really except people up until Aug.1? sounds kinda bogus

Very. While I dont know about UAB I do know people who have been accepted on the first day of class.

Just to give some hope to the waitlisters, I was in the upper third of the waitlist last year at UAB and got accepted in late May. I've heard from most people that upper third pretty much means acceptance, bottom third is pretty much a rejection, and middle third is where it is questionable, but I don't know how reliable it is.

Hey kiddos. I emailed Leigh Ann Min a week ago with some questions about scholarships. She still hasn't written back to me. Anybody else have any experience emailing her? Is this typical?

I also emailed her last week about scholarships and haven't gotten a reply... Ah, I really wanted answers to my questions!

Anyone else who is accepted to UAB get the email that says basically you will not receive a campus assignment until after may 15th? I was kind of disappointed to hear that..I would just like to know what campus one way or the other..oh well...

🙂

MS-I here, just saw that they had to close the first thread due to too many posts. Ha! Anyhow, yea, student services has been swamped of late, esp. when they were handling the match. Also, bear in mind that she handles all scholarship application/questions, which includes ones from first and second years. I know there's a great deal of anxiety when worrying about scholarships, but take a moment to relax and enjoy knowing where you're going to be next year. 🙂

in-state, post-interview rejection in my inbox today. seriously, has anyone on this board ever heard of this happening?

Are you asking if anyone has ever heard of an in-stater being rejected? Of course in-staters get rejected every year, there are more apps than seats. And of course they interview more people than there are seats, as not everyone accepted will attend. Sorry to hear about the rejection, and I hope you have another acceptance or at least a waitlist somewhere, but yeah, it happens every year to plenty of people.

Here is something crazy....Last year i didn't even get an interview, and this year i got accepted two weeks following my interview

anyone else still heard nothing? i interviewed back in feb...and as of yet no waitlist, no acceptance, no rejection. what the heck? at this point i just want to hear.

At this point my gamble would be that not hearing IS hearing... =/

call them.

OK does anybody know if it's possible to buy a car from Loan money at Uab. I heard some school are flexible and others are not and if so how would you go about doing so (like factoring it into your yearly budget)

If anyone is still wondering, here's some information on the waitlist.

There are 60 spots on the waitlist overall. Based on past years, about 25% of the waitlisted people get in. About 50% of people on the waitlist get accepted to other schools and withdraw their candidacy from UASOM. The remaining 25% of students who are waitlisted are typically not accepted. I'm not sure as to how this breaks down regarding the Upper, Middle, and Lower Thirds, but the information came from Dr. Smith in one of the introductory sessions.

I imagine that people do get accepted all the way up until August 1st, because there's gotta be someone out there who waits until the last minute to decide, or forgets to notify the school that they're declining their acceptance, so there will be some 11th hour acceptances, I imagine.

i called usa today to see when final decisions would be made on my application. she said decisions have been made and letters will be mailed out on friday bc they have to wait for the dean to sign them to make it official. however, she asked for my name and just told me over the phone that i was accepted, so yall might want to try that and no, a hold this late doesnt mean rejection!

So I'm waitlisted at South, but in the top 1/3. Did South always have thirds for their waitlist? It sounds so weird considering how Mr. Scott talked about the waitlist there. Anybody declining on South for another school?

if i get off the WL at UAB i'll go there and open a seat at south

but do they over accept every year like they did this year?

i have a friend that was in the top third of the waitlist last year and got the exact same letter we did. so it said all of that over subscribed stuff last year too and people in the middle third still got in. papdosh-if i get off the uab waitlist, ill be opening up a spot at usa as well.

PapaDosh when did u interview and how long were u on hold status?

I interviewed in early November, and have been on hold since around Thanksgiving. I'm crossing my fingers that I hear good news after May 15th. If you don't want to wait until next Monday to hear, I would advise just calling as they are pretty helpful. Anybody have any idea how long this waitlist is?

naahhh, I think I will wait to get the letter in the mail. It is easier if it is bad news to read it than than to hear it over the phone.🙂 Also, if it is good news I want to read it first 🙂 I know I am in denial 🙂
R~

but do they over accept every year like they did this year?

Last year they accepted somewhere near 237 students (That's the number that stands out in my mind, and it's somewhere close to accurate). I can't imagine that they accepted exactly 176 and then did let other acceptances trickle out as people declined. I would think that they overaccept knowing that some people will decline, and then go to waitlisters if there are spaces available. I, of course, have no confirmation one way or another on this, but it makes sense that they would overaccept every year. UASOM isn't the school for everyone, and they know that, so they'd be expecting some people (probably roughly the same percentile range every year) to decline acceptance.

Does anybody have the numbers of accepted & matriculated students for South for last year? Or any idea how many people get off the waitlist? Thanks!

Has anyone heard any news on the waitlist at UAB or anything else hopeful?

Does anyone know when we can start inquiring about possible weaknesses in our application? I heard that we can meet with Dr. Smith.

I think you can email his office now and they will be glad to either e-mail (which might take awhile) you a critique or set up an appointment for the summer. Either way it might not help you much for your primary when if you have to reapply in June.

Hey everyone,

I started a facebook page--UAB Med 2011. Join us.....

Sorry for beating this question to death, but has anyone heard of any possible waitlist movement taking place yet?

Not yet, but I'm hoping soon! Maybe next week, because I heard last year people began to be accepted from the list in the last week of May. Don't worry about beating the question to death, it's constantly on my mind. Are you waiting on UAB or USA?
