Alabama Schools Thread Part 2!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Has anyone that interviewed in the last week heard anything back yet? I thought they said we should know "as early as monday". Monday came and went and no news...😕

I have not heard anything.

I am a little bit confused about how the acceptances are going out? So if you do not hear anything immediately after the ADCOM meetings, does that mean waitlist? it sounded like acceptees would hear shortly after the adcom meetings on fridays but then waitlists would have to wait like 2-3 weeks? so i guess if nothing comes this week that automatically means waitlist?

They said "as early as Monday" but, judging by the general theme of this thread it seems uab is slow in their responses this cycle. So I wouldn't worry about not hearing anything as of yet. I am still checking my email every 4 minutes.

the fact that someone got an acceptance email on monday makes me nervous.

was that on here?

You guys need to take a deep breath. UAB is sooooo slow with this stuff. I know you're all nervous, but don't take their word for it on when they'll get back to you.

hey chester, are you a duke waitlister as well?? i think i see you popping up in a few of the threads I frequent..

Yeah, that was me. I got an email acceptance on monday, but I think they sent it to me early because of the upcoming Dean's Medical School student weekend. The day they sent me the acceptance email I had to RSVP for the weekend. I wouldn't worry too much. I talked to a staff member when I interviewed and she told me that they have some acceptance they hadn't sent out because they wanted to send all of them out at once. It sounds like they haven't done that yet.

Someone could call to check?

does anyone know what Dean's medical student weekend is? is that essentially a second look? ya, calling would be a good idea 😉

Yeah, what the heck? How come some accepted people are invited and others aren't? I really want to know but I don't want to call and ask because I don't want to be like, "Why wasn't I invited?"

Not it!...So just to get an idea about the dean's weekend....it is not for out-of-stater's(that idea has been dismissed)..is it maybe for the students they really want to recruit? or alternatively, for those that have been asked to the dean's weekend, are any of you under-represented minorities in medicine? sometimes, especially at larger state schools, second looks are more for diversity recruiting..just wondering..

I call not it as well but, really want to know what the meeting is about. I checked the web page and didnt find anything about Dean's medical student weekend.

so it has been a week now and no word from UAB, anyone else still waiting to hear?? I just want to know if all acceptances have been sent out, so if any of the current students would like to find that out, that would really rock...😀

i contacted the office. final decisions have been made but final accepted and waitlisted applicants have not been notified yet. they said should be in "a week or so"

I am in-state, been accepted, and am not a minority. I got an invite to the weekend as well. How many people who have been accepted have not heard anything about it? I thought all accepted students were invited.

I haven't heard anything about the weekend, and I was accepted in November. I'm OOS and not a URM either.

Blah for the weekend stuff. I am fully content with attending the orientation on July 25th at 9 AM.

Come to think of it, I need to schedule a physical/AB titers with my GP.

:horns:

What about financial aid?

Everyone got the fasfa in? etc?

I still haven't gotten my letter (f-you MD/MPH...I was accepted in november!!), so can any of you give me heads up on what I need to be doing?

i heard that the medical student weekend is for students who get scholarships. since i got invited to the weekend, i was keeping my fingers crossed and sure enough, i got a scholarship today!

:luck: to everyone!

Uh, so I just got an email asking me to apply for scholarships today. What the heck? Did you already fill out the online application and get one?

Got the same e-mail. First i've heard about scholarships?

so, are the rest of the people going to dean's weekend funded?

Just so you guys know the Scholarship Committee is meeting right now and making decisions.

Fill them out and get them in ASAP. They are VERY generous.

I just got one. 😀

Edit: They are paying for transportation and lodging for the weekend, so I don't think they are inviting everyone. I wish they were. I want to meet all of my potential classmates!

So I got an invitation email and am going to the weekend thing at UAB. I also got a personal email from the Scholarship Committee saying they have awarded me a scholarship for full tuition for four years. It says though that it is contigent upon me filling out the application for scholarships and FASFA. Anyone else with similar email? I hope this is a strictly merit scholarship, because if it has anything to do with financial need, I'm outta luck.

Ditto - I got a half tuition scholarship for OOS-ers and am also going to the Dean's Weekend. It's got to be merit-based, because why else would they send an email and offer it if it was need-based?

yeah...I just didn't wanna get excited and then later find out that i can't get it cuz of my financial status. For now....YEAA!

I quite honestly haven't heard people talk about scholarships to med school very often, particularly full tuition. I pray this is purely a merit based scholarship though.

I think it is merit based. They said in my letter that my scholarship was full tution and fees all four years contingent upon me turning in the FAFSA and doing well in school. It didn't say they would decrease my amount if my income goes up or anything. Come to think of it, I am not even done with my FAFSA yet so there is no way this can be need based.

Just curious. How many of ya'll actually got some sort of scholarship and how much? I have a friend who had below a 30 and was invited to the weekend conference at UAB, but don't know if she's received any scholarsip yet. I wonder if UASOM increased their scholarship fund.

We are going to med-school, and we know it is going to be more like running through the jungle.

I thought they gave scholarships to those who scored >35 on their MCAT?

hmm maybe but I am sure GPA factors into them somehow..it would be pretty rare to give a merit-based scholarship without factoring in grades.

Yeah, I didn't even know they gave out full tuition scholarships. That's what I get for applying EDP I guess, no need to recruit me 🙂 That said I did get one of the Medical Board scholarships, but renewal is contingent on remaining in the top 20% of the class. Not a walk in the park. In fact, unless I manage to somehow totally ace all of the classes this block, my money'll be up for grabs 🙂 Congrats on the scholarships everybody, and good luck!

I only had a 31 on the MCAT but a 3.93 GPA. Who knows, maybe the college is trying to "buy" all the top students into its program to compete with name brand privatre schools?? Or see how we handle the new cirriculum??

Just got in from being out of town for the past week (I love spring break 😍 !). Anyway, I received an email last Friday about receiving a scholarship as well. I am completely dumbfounded. I have not applied for anything and had no intention of turning in a FAFSA (husband is gainfully employed and willing to be my sugar daddy 😛 ). After we got over the shock of it, my husband and I started wondering if they would pull it once they realize that we are not eligible for financial aid. Anyway, even if they do, I'm pretty psyched about it. I had received an invite to the Deans Weekend a few weeks ago and assumed it went out to everyone who was in. I hate that it didn't. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone.

If anyone has any information about whether these scholarships are merit or need based or both, I would love to hear it. I plan on calling tomorrow to get more info and I am happy to share.

Funny story - When I told my mother about it, her remark was "Why couldn't you have done that when you were on my dime?" Thanks Mom! (She was only half kidding!)

I was just wondering if there is anyone who lives in birmingham currently going to the dean's weekend. I live in birmingham and I was curious if I should still stay at the hotel because they made accomodations even though I live about 5 miles away.... I just wanted to know what I should do? are they expecting us to all stay in the hotel?

Dang y'all. I'm feeling unloved. My husband is a poor PhD student, and I am OOS and could really use a little help, especially since the easy route to Alabama residency is closed starting with our class. What gives?

Yeah I got the Full Scholarship e-mail as well as the Dean weekend invite...

So what time are you guys coming in cause the meeting starts at 6pm and I'll be there around 3Pm

I live in B'hm so I'll be at the hotel probably around 4pm. I would suggest staying at the hotel to meet this awesome group of people. We have the night to ourselves, so we can go party and then crash at the hotel.

I don't think I will be using my reservation at the hotel. When I call tomorrow, I will ask her about it and let you know. I have to get my son to his baseball game first thing Saturday morning before I go to breakfast. Damn kids - always cramping my style!

just wondering, are any of you concerned about the curriculum change at UAB? I'm really uneasy with the notion of being apart of the guinea pig class.

Wow, congrats on all of those scholarship offers. Are those of you w full-tuition scholarships in-state or OOS?

Are any of you who interviewed in the last week (i.e. March 12th-16th) still waiting to hear back?? I haven't received notice yet, and it is getting kinda close to the april 1st deadline for financial aid...just wondering..thanks!

I just talked to Leigh Ann Min who is in charge of the weekend. She said that people in Birmingham are welcome to use the hotel reservation if they would like to spend time with other classmates. It is up to you. I hope that helps!
