We would go to a Quaker church if there was one... sometimes we go to a Christian church in Montgomery with the in-laws, it's okay... I like the community, but not the biblical interpretation. 🙄

I agree with Odrade though, I'd like to have a church to go to when we have kids. I think spirituality is important for kids... even if it's the kind I grew up with, hugging trees and praying in fields. 😛 Maybe nature is my church.

LOL, do we have a druid in our midst? 🙂 Something's always felt right about that to me, actually... not necessarily the actual beliefs, but the idea that God is IN nature... and it certainly is glorious to behold, if you can see it through the smog. I don't care what you say, either, a 1000 year old tree has more wisdom than I ever will, brain or no brain. Find another way to make toilet paper, to quote Mr. Matthews 🙂

Ha, those study lounges looked pretty cozy, I'm sure I'll spend plenty of time there, as my better half will have a day job. I tend to be a class-goer, but even if that doesn't hold up I'm much more likely to actually get some work done if I'm up there. If I'm at home I'll sit around watching Judge Joe Brown and be the first of the class to flunk out 🙂

Speaking of churches, I really need to find one up in B'ham. I've not been attending for, oh, 6 years or so, and it'd be nice to find somewhere to get back into it. I tend not to be a big fan of churches, as I think most of them have forgotten their purpose somehow, but going to service at least gives me opportunity to think about things that I might not otherwise think about, even if I don't agree with the pastor's views... Anybody from the area have suggestions?
There are several baptist churches that are progressive/low on the radically literal biblical interpretation. Specifically I am thinking about the one two blocks from UAB, on 8th Ave/University, and the church one block off of 5-points south, across from the post office & the Golden temple.

Faith Presbyterian's (off of Valleydale Road, in Inverness) pastor, Dr. Carter, is one of the christians I admire most in the world. He is brilliant, honest, compassionate, and genuine. His sermons are usually well written and intelligently reflect reformed Calvinist theology. The church is pretty darn conservative (I.e., people who consider Rush Limbaugh to be a voice of moderation), however, so I don't visit much anymore.

The Cathedral Church of the Advent (Episcopal) also has a tradition for leadership by brilliant theologians, and is much more centrist in its politics. However, Dean Zahl moved recently, so I don't know who his replacement is.

Are doctors in Alabama generally very religious? It seems to me that doctors would be slightly less religious than the general population. I've been living in Boston for a while, so my local experiences are probably very different, so I thought I’d ask. In other words, will an atheistic, pro-choice, pro-right-to-death, card-carrying ACLU member stick out too much at UAB? Thoughts?

Granted I have very little experience with doctors in the hospital at UAB, in the months that I followed around respiratory therapists, I rarely saw doctors anywhere near patients (except for in the ER). I would see them during rounds, but I was a mouse in the corner of the meeting room.

That said, from my experience the people and doctors at the hospital and med school are much, much cooler than I expected. A lot of them are really interested in alternative stuff and are from other places and I've never heard religion mentioned in a professional setting.

I find the South more socially "formal" but not always conservative. And there actually seems to be more polite tolerance towards difference than in Oregon, where if you dare say anything like "Democrats suck too" or "abortion is pretty yucky" you will be met with an angry and long winded rant about Bush and "the man."

Oregonians (probably like people from other places) have pretty ridiculous ideas about the racism in the South too. I think that's because history classes stop after the Civil Rights Movement. I'm pretty sure that my friends would believe me if I told them that lynchings still happen and that black people aren't allowed into medical school. I think it would almost satisfy their mobid curiosity because you grow up with these kind of hideous ideas about the South (with good historical basis), and for some reason people are really into hating it. (Sorry guys!)

Funny, because in Oregon we had anti-black laws and lynchings long after the South was integrated, and currently there is a tremendous problem with racism against hispanic people. But you know, peace and love, we're all the same and all that jazz.

Okay, this is a long ramble, sorry. 😳

Oh, one more thing, did you hear about Oregon's right to death law being upheld in the supreme court? Yay! 😍

Yeah, maybe that'll spur other states to enact similar laws as well. There's nothing like a bunch of politicians trying to make the brutal mutilation of already dead individuals seem morally imperative... While I personally don't think that I could ever be the assister in an assisted suicide, I certainly don't have the right to stop that person from making his/her own choice about the matter. And to be forced to keep someone on a vent for 20 years? People really need to start exercising their right to vote.

Part of the problem is that people *are* exercising their right to vote--at least it is a problem when people are trying to enact restrictions that aren't their business to restrict in the first place. Miscagenation laws (which restrict interracial marriages), and suffrage-restricting laws are just two examples of this sort of thing. I tend to believe that there is a whole host of things that are restricted (or that people would love to restrict) the restriction of which isn't the business of the community or the federal government. Americans can vote to pass laws about anything, and if we vote to amend the constitution, then anything can become law (assuming blatant contradictions to the existing amendments doesn't prevent such laws from being enacted...and depending on the political climate & who is in the supreme court, who knows!)
One of the most upsetting things I see today is the trend for people (whether conservative or liberal) trying to outlaw everything that they see as immoral. In truth, the fact that something is (merely) morally wrong is not sufficient reason to outlaw a behavior. We tend to embrace laws that guard the public from others engaging in "icky" or immoral (according to the majority of the community) behaviors. Every time I see people legislating morality I get nervous; sometimes there is reason to restrict freedoms, but I tend to believe that the good reasons for restricting freedom (though moral in nature...tend to come from a limited subset of moral reasons (autonomy, harms to others, etc...)

Really, as patriots, the conservatives who oppose physician-assisted death should vote to allow it (even if they see it as immoral), since autonomy, freedom (in general), and freedom of conscience/religioin are maximized.

Sorry for the rant.

Oh, and I agree with BooMed about the general tolerance thing with people in the South. Even if people disagree with your views, they usually are respectful and not too mean about it. However, EVERY interviewer I had mentioned their family and their faith/church activities, either during the interview itself or in their bio statement. It made me feel like I was in a nest of conservativism. Oh well.

A few months back I was watching the Daily Show and it was right after South Africa had legalized gay marraige, and John Stewart was like, "Okay now the SOUTH AFRICANS are more progressive than we are!"

I just don't give a f*ck what people do as long as it's not hurting anyone else. I hate the idea of outlawing every little thing that people don't like! We need to remember that this country was founded on freedom, not fear.

I don't know how much truth there is to it, but they told us that no matter when you are accepted you have the same chance of getting your first pick. Dr. Smith basically said that for each 12 people they accept, six go to B'Ham and three each to the others. Does anyone else remember this?

When is your interview?

interview was yesterday. went pretty well, no grilling or odd questions. every interviewer asked ab my lack of clinical experience so i see that a very possible sinking point.

anyone know about possible acceptances for this month???? Still anxiously waiting. 🙁

I had one interviewer ask me about it, or specifically lack of shadowing experience. It didn't seem to affect me in the end. Good luck.

My shadowing experience (actually, the lack thereof) was the one thing that I really got zapped for in my interviews. Luckily, my experiences were high quality, so it ended up not costing me too much.

I GOT IN!!!!!!!! oh man, this is SOOO amazing!!!

Congratulations! Welcome to the cool-kids club....

Well I have a question, when do we get a class website? My acceptance email said January, but it's now february... 🙄

By the way, we went to the Alabama Symphony last night and it was pretty great. I could have just watched the conductor jump around and gesture, he was NUTSO. In a good way.

I've been wondering where this thread went. I have been reading it thinking maybe someday I will be one of you....

Probably not though since I interview at UASOM on Feb. 16th.

I just interviewed at South Alabama last week.

I would love to go to either Alabama school. Maybe I should post on that wishing well thread...

Good luck Andi! And it's not too late to get in. 🙂

Does UAB have any sort of status page or anything?
They have a page where you can pull up your own info, things like when and if your secondary was received, letters of rec, fee, etc, but then no more info unless accepted, then it says if they've received your campus placement form and deposit. I'd like to see the webpage go up as well, it would be nice to be able to start planning....

Boo, where was the symphony? That sounds like fun. I plan on going to see Joshua Bell do a recital next month here in ttown, should be fun!!

It was at the Alyce Stevens Center (or however you spell that), which was neat b/c we were able to able to sit facing the conductor. Next week there is a flamenco/tango show which I really want to see. The normal tix are $45 but the student price is only $10. 🙂

Has anyone been to the ballet here? I am all jazed up to see artsy cultural things now.

Hey guys I have a question. I have already had my interview, and I just saw some new information that loaded on the status page. I saw this: Items needed after offer of acceptance: . Is that some new information that they added for everyone or does that mean I may possibly be accepted? Thanks for the replies in advance.

I think they added that to the status page for everyone, because it was on mine before I was accepted. Good luck though, who knows, maybe it is a good sign. :luck:

It was on mine before I even submitted my secondary, so I wouldn't read too much into it. Good luck all the same! How did your interview go?

Does anyone know when the adcom meets again? it is one thursday a month correct?

You can buy a four-pack to Alys Stephens for $25, making it $5.50. I got fourth row seats (if you ask nicely)!

Wow, 😱 , thanks Paikman.

I believe this to be true, that they do meet on one thursday every month. However, this does not mean that everyone who gets in that month will hear at the same time. If you scroll back through the posts, you'll see that I was accepted a few days after someone else in the month of January.

did any of u get acceptance letters from UAB in Feb?

I've gotten nothing. (I was accepted almost a month ago.) I called recently, and they said that they were sending the letters out soon--as in they should be in the mail.

I got the paper letter about 10-14 days after the email acceptance. Do any of you other people who already got letters still habitually (and pathalogically) check your mail every day, hoping that you will see more mail from UASOM? I do, and it is sick, but I can't stop.....

hey,

what's up with UASOM financial aid? i got an outdated packet (05-06) on interview day, but i was told not to fill it out because a 2006-2007 packet is going to be out soon.

on top of that, a rep in financial aid (UAB financial aid, NOT Mark Martin) told me that we can't apply for scholarships as incoming studnets...true? false? the rep also said that the new finanicial aid packets will be out around march. what do ya'll know?

I don't think they are very organized. I was really excited about the school, but that excitement has waned due to their lack of organization. If they don't care about us now, imagine how they will be once we are enrolled (more or less stuck there).

agreed, got my acceptance packet today. Anyone with any information about the class website?

I bet they are being slow to update the 2010 class website since the administration is in the middle of trying to put together the new systems-based curriculum.

Scholarships are available, but you can't apply for them. Qualified persons are considered for scholarships automatically. They will let you know if you get one, or if you need to interview for one. One of my friends got a scholarship to UASOM already this year, so scholarships *do* exist.

Loans are available, and you apply through FAFSA and UAB to get them. UAB's new forms will be available eventually (I thought I saw some at the Financial aid office).

Have you all filled out your FAFSA stuff yet? I am such a procrastinator... I haven't gotten anything in the mail from UAB except for my acceptance letter.

Does anyone know if the UAB's committee is going to meet/ has met this month?
