Alabama could use some more med schools to keep this thread on the first page! Been a while since anybody heard any news from either? 🙄

True that, and with monthly admissions meetings news is slow to come by!

That said, I hope each person on this thread is accepted, you seem like you'd be some pretty cool classmates 🙂

I got an e-mail a couple of days ago saying that i hadn't completed my campus preference form. I don't know if that's any kind of sign of activity(and if so, of what kind).

Nothing new to report here. We're all waiting to hear that you got accepted, BooMed. :luck:

It's my secret goal to be accepted sometime after the amazing Q is begged to come to UAB. I wonder what day the adcom meets this month?

Speaking of campus selection, which ones are you guys most interested in? I think B'Ham in the obvious choice, since you get to work in the University of Hospital and all, but I've heard that Huntsville is really great for primary care, and a nice town too. I'm not sure about Tuscaloosa.

I feel like it's a pretty hard choice to make within a few days of interviewing, especially for out of state. I guess it's difficult for them to organize it all or something. 🙄

i grew up in Tuscaloosa and don't want to go there for that reason but it's actually not a bad town. The hospital (DCH Medical Center) is the fourth or fifth largest hospital in the state and is the primary hospital for the whole west central part of the state. it has a busy ER, a cancer center, a rehab unit, etc. The town is a nice, medium-sized southern college town without too much to do if you're not an undergraduate. The big advantage that T-town has over Huntsville is its proximity to Birmingham. You can get there in an hour. A lot of people (I don't know about med students) live in birmingham and work in tuscaloosa (or vice versa).

Tuscaloosa *is* a nice town....if you're 18-21 (maybe a couple of years beyond that for a guy). But I don't see myself there as a 31-year-old. It's the same reservation I have about UF and U Mich. All of these schools and facilities are absolutely fantastic, and I have no doubt the education would be as well. But do I really want to live in a college town for the next four years, assuming I have a choice in the matter? I didn't even want to do that when I was college age. 😳

Have you already interviewed? If I remember the instructions correctly, we are supposed to identify our choice after interviewing. Also, they probably won't send you your acceptance until after the form is complete, since the acceptance letter spells out where you will spend years 3 & 4. Hurry up & submit your choice! Destiny awaits!

I chose Birmingham. Tuscaloosa = too small, too drunk. Huntsville = quiet, nice town. good to raise kids in, but I'll never have kids, so.... Birmingham = biggest city in state, best hospital in region, lots to do, and this is where my friends, family, and house are. I ain't movin' for a while...

To all:
If you have already submitted your choice, what did you select?

If you have not submitted your choice or have not interviewed yet, which way are you leaning?

Hey yall, just thought i'd tell you they're doing something down in B'ham. I just got an interview for early next semester. I was complete around mid-nov. i think. Do they accept alot of people from the later pools or am i trying for a spot on the wait list? As for the campus selection, i really dont' know what i'd do if i didn't get B'ham. i have friends at bama that i'm pretty sure wont' be graduating any time soon so i guess i'd have fun there but i really have no desire to go to huntsville either. it's kinda ridiculous. i don't know any other schools that split up classes like this.

I put down B'ham. I got an interview too.

1. B'ham
2. Huntsville
3. Tuscaloosa

I hope I don't get Tuscaloosa b/c it would be hard to live there even for a year since I'm a huge Auburn fan. I'll think about that when the time comes; first I have to get accepted!

amen to that one. I wish there was some website that showed acceptance rate based on interview date. But that probably has a lot to do with when you complete the app. I am just hoping for some element of hope now. I hate this waiting game, especially during finals week. Ah well, back to work on my film.

It's kind of interesting that on their website they say that when you interview has no bearing on your changes - as in, being early isn't better. Do you think that's really true? I guess I would rather be early just for the chance of knowing sooner.

I know that the earlier you interview, your chances are at least a little better if for no other reason than the committee looks at your file each meeting. My tour guide told us that 99% of the students interviewed in October and 90% of those interviewed in November were accepted. You guys are in good shape. I think the biggest disadvantage for getting a late interview for UAB is that you will most likely not get your campus choice. People receive their first preference until the Birminghams spots are filled (which happens every year). After that, accepted students who have B'ham as #1 choice will be given the option to go to a different campus or decline their acceptance. Kinda harsh, but that's the way they do things. Hope that helps.

 I so hope you are right! (and that i'm not in that last 10% :scared: )

Me too! I'm crossing my fingers for Jammin, me and everyone else who interviewed last month. 👍 :luck:

Does anyone know if the committee meets the same time this month, as well? Should we be expecting some good news to come your way in another week or so?

A friend of mine who interviewer on Dec. 1 said that they were planning to meet on the 15th of this month. But I don't know how that correlates to the sending out of acceptances.

What are the days of the month that the last two rounds of acceptances went out? I remember being told on interview day that the emails followed shortly after the committee meets & decides who got in that month. I am hoping that the people who recently interviewed will find out before Christmas.

Oh, what a wonderful christmas present that would be....

Ack, I'm going to leave the country on the 14th and be searching for internet cafes during my whole trip! :scared:

It seemed like last month they sent out acceptences kind of later than they promised. They told us "Friday or Monday" and it was more like 2 weeks later when anyone heard. 🙄

Visiting some friends in Paris/Amsterdam. Probably the worst time of year to go weather-wise, but we have a free place to stay!

Whoopsie daisy, rescuing our thread. 🙂

Woo just got to 500 posts! Pretty sure that this thread was one of hte largest contributing factors to that 🙂

We need to get this thread to 500!!! WOOO Man...this waiting game sucks.

Agreed. When did you interview at UAB? How'd you like the school?

Is anyone applying MD/PhD or MD/MPH? I'm still wondering if I should have applied for the MPH program is well...

Waiting to go to the interview. Its January...12-13 I believe. I can't wait 🙂

I'll be there too. See you then.

Isn't Q interested in MD/PhD?? Or is it that she already has grad training?

Actually, I am interested in academic medicine, and am looking into some other options offered at UAB. The MD/PhD is really for people who want the full-time grant-writing & research type careers, with *maybe* a little patient care thrown in. They serve patient interests mostly through research. I am hoping to angle for a 20-25% research, 25% teaching, 50% patient care kind of job. There are several different programs (aside from the MD/PhD) for getting additional research training. The MS/MD joint program is one; post-MD training is another, and UAB has programs for post-fellowship and junior faculty types as well. Basically, if you are interested and your grades are good, you can get the training & experience that you need, even if you don't get the MD/PhD.

I'm considering getting my MPH at some point, but I am not completely sold on MD/MPH programs, simply because of the limited number of seats available. I know a bunch of people who could have gotten into the MD program at UAB, but because they applied MD/MPH were waitlisted and then rejected.

Not saying that there's anything wrong with people who want to do MD/MPH. Just not my particular cup of tea.

I'm coming in with a PhD, and the way I see it, one is enough to last me a lifetime. It's been hard enough earning one. 😛

BTW, the adcom met today (Thursday), so some of y'all might hear as early as tomorrow or Monday. Don't forget to submit your campus choice survey if you haven't already, because they won't tell you that you've been accepted until you do. Next meeting is in Jan. Good luck to everyone!

Do you think the adcom picked people to interview at today's meeting? Just curious.

That I don't know. They didn't mention anything about it. They just said that everyone who has interviewed up through and including today might hear within the next week or so. They also said not to panic if you don't hear tomorrow or next week, because they are going to call more people in Jan.

ack....so anxious to hear some positive news from them today (friday).... :scared:

Regardless, good luck to everyone who interviewed over hte past few weeks. Hope we all get in (esp boo, but i think she's out of the country livin it up in Amsterdam)

Couldn't find the thread...actually had to search it...Anyone hear anything yet?

All's quite on my email front.

I haven't heard anything either. I think our thread has been so quiet because BooMed is on vacation on a beach somewhere. 😉

So true...Plus, now that I'm not on campus (at home in Bham for the break), I don't have my fast-internet access. Combine that with my parents getting rid of cable tv (they didn't see the need for it), and leaving my car on campus (not wanting to drive 12 hours back home)....I am officially stuck in boredom land. Luckily, my friend's pressured me into starting to read harry potter, so now at least I have a whole series of books to keep me occupied.

Harry Potter is awesome. 👍 When you finish those, try Eragon and The Eldest by Christopher Paolini. Kid wrote the first novel when he was 19 y/o. :wow: Also, the Chronicles of Narnia are fantastic. My favorite is The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

I agree, that is probably the best book in the CS lewis series.
I am currently reading (and reccommend):
A fortunate man: the story of a country doctor, by John Berger (a Booker prize winning author) & photography by Jean Mohr. Pictures & words about the life of a doc in the English countryside. Best-written prose I've ever read about being in healthcare.
Multicultural Ettiquette by Noriene Dresser. Easy to read, lots of real (and useful) facts and examples for relating to people who are from different backgrounds. Very useful for people doing buisiness with or caring for foreigners, immigrants, etc. Definitely relevant to being a good doctor.
A game of thrones by George Martin. big, fun epic story. just 250 pages in, but am genuinely interested in the story. I really tend to prefer sci-fi and nonfiction to fantasy but this fantasy novel is really well written, has depth & surprises, and doesn't rely too heavily on previous knowledge of the fantasy genre.

Back on the subject of the pending curriculum change:
I just noticed that they updated the "current applicant" UASOM website to include the following somewhat-not-informative claim:

-----
UASOM Curriculum

The preclinical curriculum may change from a “subject based” format to an “integrated curriculum”. Further information will be posted as available.

-----

This just substantiates the reports we've been hearing from teachers, applicants, and current students. Woo.

Also, I know that they are *also* considering a change of the behavioral science & neuroscience portion of the curriculum. Though this change may just be incorportated into the new overall curriculum design.
