We were already on the first day when a girl found out she got accepted to the same medical school as her boyfriend and took off for Chicago. So we even had a new acceptance as of the second day of orientation.

That's just crazy! I wonder if they are still together...

Wait List has now moved to #47.

You beat me to it! I think I was just too discouraged and depressed to write about it. I guess I should start filling out the new AMCAS form. I'm still holding out hope, but there's no harm in being prepared for the worst. I've thought about giving Admissions a call to feel things out, but I doubt they could give me any more information. Argh, this is soooo frustrating...

One person just left the OHSU class of '12 facebook group today. I am assuming that it is the same person who is responsible for bumping up the admit number from 47 to 48, but there is still a chance for those of you waiting.

Haha...someone's just a tiny bit obsessive about the OHSU facebook group.

Just kidding, well, sort of.

I wish I could put stock in the facebook group, but when I looked it up it showed only 27 members. At that rate I would already be a member. 🙁

Well, I gotta do something to kill time at my boring job 😉

So I finally had to break down and call Admissions. They verified that this year has been a much slower year for the alternate list and intimated that they don't believe there will be too much more movement. Although of course they did acknowledge that anything was possible. They did mention that not everyone among the current 48 has accepted yet, and that they usually give them two weeks. As the time gets closer to orientation, they will switch from snail mail to e-mail and calls. At that point, from my understanding students will have 24 hours to respond before they move down the list. They'll probably stop pulling from the list on the 18th, although as someone above posted, that can have a little give.

So it appears this will be going down as the slowest OHSU waitlist in SDN forum memory. Bleah!

Well, at some point today the list moved from #48 to #50. I didn't see it, because I had decided that if the list was going to ignore me, then I was going to ignore it. Luckily my fiance didn't know about my weird pact. So now I just need to not check my computer for the next week or so and I stand a slim slim chance of making it!

In the questions department, does anyone know what the optional family rotation thing is all about? I'll be missing it at any rate, but it would be nice to know what I'm missing.

It's quite sad. I'm sure it's probably as, if not more competitive elsewhere around the US. I knew my fate long ago. I'm willing to bet that the number of applicants will top the 46,000+ number in the mid to late 90's.

Good luck to you though...you just never know. :luck:

If it's the same thing as when I started, you have the option of spending a week before classes start with a rural fam med doc- maybe they have local docs you can work with too, I can't remember. It sounded interesting, but I was traveling out of the country and couldn't do it. You have the same opportunity between the first and second years to spend anywhere from a week to a month with a rural doc, plus a third year rural rotation, so I wouldn't worry too much about missing it now. You'll have plenty of opportunities later if you end up at OHSU, and it would mainly just be a shadowing experience at this stage anyway, I would imagine.

Good luck to all those waiting to hear still. I'm happy to try to answer any OHSU questions I can.

Mistress S, do you know anything about the Eugene campus? I can't find much dated after the tort payout business, but I'm really interested if it's still going to happen. Thanks for any info you might have! 🙂

I don't know for sure, but the last thing I heard was that the Eugene campus was on hold (along with a lot of other projects) given the financial upheaval with the tort cap removal. Supposedly, they're still looking for a way to do it, but I don't think it's happening anytime real soon. There are still many options to do third and fourth year rotations in Eugene and Bend, with housing provided.

Supposedly there's a DO school slated to open in Lebanon in 2010 or 2011, but the details aren't really worked out. Especially now that the budget is getting tight, and it's even worse around the state, I wouldn't be surprised if that got pushed back.

Well it looks like nos. 49 & 50 had prior engagements. The list just jumped to #52! So much for my ignoring the list. This week is going to be a nailbiter for sure.

55!!! I'm starting to feel a little barfy...:scared:

Yep, that is exactly what it is. I had to pass on it because I needed the time to get settled into Portland. I contacted the director and, as Mistress S so expertly pointed out, you can indeed do the program between MS1 and MS2 as well.

Yep, I missed the program too - in my case because I have a pet ferret and I think she would hate me forever if I put her in a kennel one week after landing in Portland. I'll probably be doing it next summer (assuming the MSTP program is down with that...), it sounds like fun.

And good luck to those of you still waiting, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

Today is the first day of orientation and the list moved two spaces to #57!

I am #61, so it looks like my dream is probably dead in the water at this point. My longshot hope is that 56-59 have all been happily accepted elsewhere. #60, whoever he or she is, and I would be overjoyed at our good fortune. It would be a close finish worthy of the Olympics.

Thanks to everyone on here for your support and well wishes. It has been a long tough slog, but I'm really glad that I found this community of smart and helpful people. Here's to next time! And here's to those of you who already have been accepted! Good luck and have fun!

And I'm just dying to know how orientation was, so don't be afraid to post your impressions here either.

If a really long line and a horrible student ID photo had a lovechild...that would be my orientation.

Joking aside, some of it was informative, and it was really great to meet more of the class, so it wasn't a total bust. Here's to hoping tomorrow has fewer lines!

The Eugene and Bend campuses and the new waterfront campus for Medicine/Nursing/Dental have all been backburnered following the rescinding of the tort cap.

Word is per the Oregonian (nothing in house yet) that the waterfront campus is gaining momentum as OHSU will be partnering some of the land with PSU and UO for their own science departsment's endeavors.

The ID line was the worst. 2 hours for me last year I think? They had to keep the office open past hours to meet the demand, they never learn.

Good news: no more long lines the rest of the week. Bad news: long, boring lectures instead. Hopefully you'll be spared the GroupWise lecture this year now that we've migrated to Outlook. Enjoy it though, a week of orientation feels too long, but it gives you a great opportunity to meet a lot of your classmates, and you'll be sick of the academic stuff soon enough.

Sounds like my friend last year who was #71 when we made it to #69. She didn't make it, but here's hoping you catch the roll of the dice!

Well, the orientation schedule still says we will have a Groupwise (not Outlook) lecture. I hope the speaker has been told about the migration to Outlook 😉

Skip the lines. Just get there first thing in the morning (I think public safety opens at 7am) before the orientation for the day begins. Of course, you've all probably gotten your IDs by this point.

Well, I finally got the official closure letter a couple of weeks ago. Congrats to all of those that got in this year. I'm busy completing all my secondaries now and gearing up for interview season...again.

The last time I called to check on the waitlist status I asked about the class size and confirmed that it had been reduced five spots to 115 this year. Then I realized that I was included in that group of poor suckers. But-for the reduction, I would be attending OHSU right now. Talk about frustrating...

For those of you who got in and went through orientation, did they mention anything about the smaller class size? I was wondering what the reasoning for it might have been, not that it does me any good now. It would be nice if this could be somehow taken into account for the upcoming cycle, but I know that everything is going to be wiped clear. Darn the fickle hand of fate!

hi all - i just received an interview invite to ohsu and am trying to decide when to schedule the interview. i can come at the end of october, but if i delay my visit until mid-december, i can stay with friends and spend more time in portland. does anyone have a sense of whether putting off the visit until december would be detrimental?

the admissions staff were reassuring when i asked about this, and i know the school has a semi-rolling admissions policy, but i thought i might as well ask those of you who have been through the process. thanks in advance for any help!

Does anyone know how many applicants then send secondaries too? What percentage is screened out?

ohsu is essentially non-rolling. they only accept less than 15% of the class before may. so you really wouldn't be at a disadvantage to interview in december. plus, i checked out your profile and from the info in there you seem competitive enough not to worry about it. if you are going to get into ohsu, interviewing a couple months later than planned will not change that fact. hey, there are at least two people that got in from my interview date last year, and that was april 2nd!

the screen is very easy to get past. they send secondaries to at least 80% of primary applicants from what i've heard.

Well, I wish they'd get a move-on....been complete with AMCAS for a few weeks and nothing from Oregon yet. If I don't get in to SC schools my very close runner-up is home sweet home.... besides my baby sis is doing research at OHSU now and plans to apply next cycle and I think it would be kinda nifty to be in med school with my sister.

You'll be absolutely fine interviewing later, and you may even have a few more perks than students interviewing in the next few weeks. By december, the student host program will be set up (it sounds like you would be staying with friends, but it's still a good option), first years will be more settled in and likely to come help with the interview day, and most of the kinks will probably be worked out of the system.

The only downside I can think of is that Portland will be uglier in December...

Thank you, I really appreciate the information! And no matter how ugly Portland is in December, it will be a nice vacation from December on the East Coast. 😛

So I just interviewed at OHSU yesterday. It was my first ever interview so I was pretty nervous. I think the interviews went well but again you never know with these things. Just reading this blog has made me very nervous with where I'll stand in the next 8 months. I just hope I'm one of the lucky and fortunate ones to get an acceptance early. But if getting in the hold pool means I'm not instantly rejected, I'm perfectly ok with that too. Also they have in fact decreased their class size by 5 people. I wouldn't be surprised if that decrease somehow comes and bites me in the butt somehow. But they said they will notify me where I stand in 4-6 weeks. As long as its not a rejection I'll be totally cool. Good luck to all those who have interviews in the next few months. OHSU is an awesome school and hands down my number one choice.
